Building an Online Presence People Trust | RR385

There is an old marketing saying that Don Wexler brought up on this episode. Nobody wants a quarter-inch drill bit, they want a quarter-inch hole. It is not his own line, but it is one he leans on often, and it set the tone for a very engaging conversation.

Don is a digital marketing and video strategist based in Lafayette, California. He got his start selling real estate, and today he has several businesses that focus on all things marketing.

One business that I have had some exposure to is his studio in which he turns real client reviews into short, powerful video testimonials.

We talked about why so many wonderful reviews sit quietly on a website or a LinkedIn profile, and what changes the moment those words become a face and a voice. Don walked me through how video works at every stage of a buyer's decision, from a first glance to the moment someone finally reaches out.

We also got into something close to my own recent experience. Don built an AI spokesperson for me, and on this episode, we talked honestly about where that kind of technology helps and where it could easily go wrong. His answer came down to one idea: focus on the message, not the messenger.

A few takeaways from our conversation:

  • Most businesses talk about what they do instead of the problem they solve. As the old saying goes, get clear on the hole, not the drill bit.
  • A testimonial becomes far more powerful once it moves from text to video, and it works at every stage of a buyer's journey.
  • If you use AI to help tell your story, disclose it. Trust breaks the moment someone feels tricked.
  • A business that depends entirely on one person is fragile. Building systems and bringing in help protects both you and what you have built.
  • The two skills that will always matter are writing your ideas clearly and speaking them to a group.
  • Don and I also talked about staying connected in a world that keeps pulling us toward our screens, and why relationships still close every deal in the end.

Janice Porter:

Hello, hello, and welcome to this week's episode

Janice Porter:

of Relationships Rule. Today, I am having a conversation with

Janice Porter:

Don Wexler, a digital marketing and video strategist from Living

Janice Porter:

Now in Lafayette, California. First of all, welcome to the

Janice Porter:

show, Don.

Don Wexler:

Well, thank you for having me, Janice.

Janice Porter:

My pleasure. Don has spent decades helping

Janice Porter:

businesses build trust before a conversation ever begins. He

Janice Porter:

started in real estate, and today he runs a video studio

Janice Porter:

that turns real client reviews into video testimonials. I

Janice Porter:

recently saw his work up close, and by the way, I know that's

Janice Porter:

only part of what he does, but it's the part I just had an

Janice Porter:

experience with. I recently saw his work close up when he

Janice Porter:

created an AI spokesperson for me. She shares a real client's

Janice Porter:

words, and it got me thinking about where technology ends and

Janice Porter:

real relationships begin. John and I are going to talk about

Janice Porter:

how relationships lead to business and how video and AI

Janice Porter:

can help us show up with more confidence and heart, so that's

Janice Porter:

where I'm coming from, and it's so fun to have that experience

Janice Porter:

with what you're doing currently right now. Because I know that's

Janice Porter:

pretty exciting work. So wrap up

Don Wexler:

with it.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. So first of all, Don, I know you've worn a

Janice Porter:

lot of hats over the years, and when someone asks you now, what

Janice Porter:

do you do? How do you answer? And it's a clean show, just for

Janice Porter:

the record.

Don Wexler:

Oh, I'm glad you clarified. Thank you. What do I

Don Wexler:

do now? We help businesses get more business online and on

Don Wexler:

mobile devices. Is really the overarching theme.

Janice Porter:

Okay, and looking across everything that you've

Janice Porter:

built, what's the common thread that ties it all together?

Don Wexler:

Understanding your target audience, understanding

Don Wexler:

what the business actually offers. Meaning, most businesses

Don Wexler:

don't really understand what they're offering from a

Don Wexler:

marketing perspective. They don't know how to really boil it

Don Wexler:

down to the core problem that they're solving,

Janice Porter:

right? And okay, I'll come back to that. Yep.

Don Wexler:

Okay, and and then crafting the collateral and the

Don Wexler:

messaging that supports leading the prospect through baby steps,

Don Wexler:

typically towards an offline experience, because most of our

Don Wexler:

we don't do a lot in the e-commerce world.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

so most of our clients really face-to-face

Don Wexler:

business. Ultimately, it's a person doing business with a

Don Wexler:

person,

Janice Porter:

right? Okay,

Don Wexler:

that starts when we get them offline. So the irony

Don Wexler:

is, we're online marketers, but our goal is to get people

Don Wexler:

offline.

Janice Porter:

Okay, so now I forgot what I was going to say.

Janice Porter:

Okay, so you said something about most people don't know how

Janice Porter:

to describe what their business actually is. That's not going to

Janice Porter:

edit.

Don Wexler:

Understand. So here's here's even more core

Don Wexler:

than that. My one of my other companies is we teach business

Don Wexler:

owners how to think about marketing.

Janice Porter:

Okay.

Don Wexler:

No surprise that they aren't marketers. Oh,

Janice Porter:

right,

Don Wexler:

right. They do really well. Just like I'm not

Don Wexler:

gonna, you know, frame a house particularly.

Janice Porter:

Right. Well,

Don Wexler:

framer doesn't do marketing. So yeah.

Janice Porter:

And so does that. Would you say this is similar?

Janice Porter:

Because I just had a conversation with somebody that

Janice Porter:

I don't. I had met him on a networking group or something,

Janice Porter:

and he said, and we were talking about what he does, and he said

Janice Porter:

something about I have to get more clear on on what on what I

Janice Porter:

do, and I said, if I may, be careful that you make sure that

Janice Porter:

you're more clear on what problem you solve.

Don Wexler:

Bingo,

Janice Porter:

right? So

Don Wexler:

here's here's the parable or the metaphor that I

Don Wexler:

typically use when teaching people about nobody want. I

Don Wexler:

didn't make this up. I'm just quoting from somebody else. That

Don Wexler:

was nobody wants a quarter inch drill bit.

Janice Porter:

Right.

Don Wexler:

What they want is a quarter inch hole,

Janice Porter:

right, right.

Don Wexler:

But businesses typically talk about the drill

Don Wexler:

bits because that's what they're familiar with. That's what they

Don Wexler:

work with every day.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

they don't really understand that the drill bit a

Don Wexler:

means to an end,

Janice Porter:

right?

Don Wexler:

Not the end in and of itself,

Janice Porter:

right? And I had to learn that too because I,

Janice Porter:

when I went into business for myself, I had knew nothing about

Janice Porter:

business, and so you learn as you're going, and you learn from

Janice Porter:

other people and from reading and experiences and stuff. But

Janice Porter:

that's a major, basic thing that people get wrong. Yeah, and

Don Wexler:

foundation for everything. Frankly,

Janice Porter:

pardon me.

Don Wexler:

It's the foundation for everything. Yes.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. So many business owners have wonderful

Janice Porter:

reviews that sit quietly on their LinkedIn profile for one,

Janice Porter:

and on their websites for another. Why do you think those

Janice Porter:

words go unused, and what change? And what changes when a

Janice Porter:

client's story becomes a video?

Don Wexler:

Well, if you just look at it pragmatically, so. So

Don Wexler:

both reviews you'll find are on Google Business Profile, Yelp,

Don Wexler:

Trustpilot, or one of these platforms, right? And you may

Don Wexler:

pull them from those platforms, and you know there's ways to

Don Wexler:

have them automatically populate your website. But the reality

Don Wexler:

is, people have to go find the reviews. The reviews don't find

Don Wexler:

them, if you will, and add on top of that that most people

Don Wexler:

really, you know, reading is becoming an extinct practice.

Janice Porter:

Sad, really,

Don Wexler:

and particularly as we get more and more on these

Don Wexler:

kinds of devices,

Janice Porter:

yeah,

Don Wexler:

they're not really friendly to text. I mean, you

Don Wexler:

know, copious amounts of text are just not-they're

Don Wexler:

off-putting.

Janice Porter:

Yes,

Don Wexler:

whereas video is particularly enticing, you know,

Don Wexler:

the MTV started all that. For those who are old enough to

Don Wexler:

remember MTV, yes.

Don Wexler:

So I know you and I are, but you know, some people watching this

Don Wexler:

may be like MTV. Yeah. Anyway, go look it up.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Anyway, so by converting them into a video

Don Wexler:

format, you can now, of course, put them on your website, but

Don Wexler:

you can also syndicate them across social media. And so now

Don Wexler:

videos can find them versus them having to find it.

Janice Porter:

Now, would you say there's there's a sweet spot

Janice Porter:

to how long these videos should be? Because we're all short

Janice Porter:

attention. Yeah, 50

Don Wexler:

seconds. You know, okay, 30 seconds, 50 seconds. In

Don Wexler:

fact, 50 seconds is kind of pushing the outer limits.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

got to get as close to 30 to 40 seconds as you can

Don Wexler:

get.

Janice Porter:

Okay, okay,

Don Wexler:

got it to the point. You know, no one's got no one's

Don Wexler:

nobody wants to watch a documentary on your business.

Janice Porter:

No, exactly. Can you think of a time when a video

Janice Porter:

testimonial has changed how a client responded to a business.

Don Wexler:

Oh yeah, well sure. Because so let's okay. I'm going

Don Wexler:

to get into a little marketing geekdom here for a moment. Okay.

Don Wexler:

So bear with me. There's a thing called in marketing. There's a

Don Wexler:

concept called a marketing funnel.

Janice Porter:

Yes.

Don Wexler:

And there's top of funnel, middle of funnel, and

Don Wexler:

bottom of funnel. So for those who uninitiated, top of funnel

Don Wexler:

essentially is just awareness. In other words, getting the

Don Wexler:

somebody to know you exist, right? So that's just and and

Don Wexler:

video, of course, operates very well on top of funnel because

Don Wexler:

people will actually look at

Janice Porter:

it, right?

Don Wexler:

Whereas they may skim quickly over some text.

Don Wexler:

Middle of funnel is education typically, so this is where you

Don Wexler:

educate the client or the prospect, excuse me, the

Don Wexler:

prospect about what you do and you know how you do it, and

Don Wexler:

perhaps even why they should be why they should care. Now the

Don Wexler:

assumption is that they have an interest in what you do,

Janice Porter:

right?

Don Wexler:

If they have no interest, they're going to just

Don Wexler:

bounce anyway. But if they have an interest and they want some

Don Wexler:

more information, it's part of their due diligence process, and

Don Wexler:

then the bottom of funnel is conversion. So this is where you

Don Wexler:

actually convert prospects that they're now aware of who you

Don Wexler:

are. They kind of understand what you do and how you do it.

Don Wexler:

Now they need what some commonly called social proof, which we

Don Wexler:

call reviews. The layperson calls reviews to substantiate

Don Wexler:

the fact that they're not going to be the only idiot who's used

Don Wexler:

you and had it, you know, right? They're not going to take. It

Don Wexler:

reduces their risk, right? They like, okay, other people had a

Don Wexler:

good experience with these people, so perhaps I'll have a

Don Wexler:

good experience with this person, right? That kind of a

Don Wexler:

thing, and so it operates in those three parts of the funnel

Don Wexler:

quite effectively. Not much marketing operates in all three

Don Wexler:

parts of the funnel, whereas video is particularly suited to

Don Wexler:

that. Add on top of that that when you some tangential

Don Wexler:

benefits of video is that if you put it on your website, which I

Don Wexler:

highly recommend by the way, everybody should have video on

Don Wexler:

their homepage at a minimum, and each of their anchor pages. And

Don Wexler:

anchor pages are what the industry calls subject pages,

Don Wexler:

like you know, water heater, fence, you know, things that

Don Wexler:

you're depending on your business, you know, accounting,

Don Wexler:

the the core kind of things that you offer that describe that,

Don Wexler:

but more. The reason why that's beneficial is that there's this

Don Wexler:

company called Google. You may have heard of. Have you heard of

Don Wexler:

Google? Yeah. Okay. All right. So the search engines rate.

Don Wexler:

Okay, let me back. We'll step back. There's a common misnomer,

Don Wexler:

which is that you want to get your website ranked higher on

Don Wexler:

the search engines. You don't rank your website on search

Don Wexler:

engines. You rank web pages. That's why the homepage is

Don Wexler:

rarely the page that ranks, because usually it's a topic

Don Wexler:

related to your subject matter, which is rarely the homepage.

Janice Porter:

Right. So if you're

Don Wexler:

going to go deep on a topic, that's the page that

Don Wexler:

ranks, not the homepage itself. All right. So we'll just take

Don Wexler:

water heaters since I started with that one already. So if you

Don Wexler:

are a HVAC, right, and you're putting in water heaters for a

Don Wexler:

plumber, right? Then, if you have a video on your page that

Don Wexler:

talks about that particular plumbing problem, then people

Don Wexler:

are going to be there longer as you're watching a video. Well,

Don Wexler:

that signals to Google there must be something pretty good on

Don Wexler:

that page about. This topic, because they're actually

Don Wexler:

spending a lengthy amount of time. Now, when I say lengthy,

Don Wexler:

30 seconds is like dog ears times 20.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

right. Because you know the average page dwell time

Don Wexler:

is two to three seconds. So somebody's on a page for 30

Don Wexler:

seconds. That definitely hurts up Google's ears, or and the

Don Wexler:

other search engines. I'm just using Google because they're the

Don Wexler:

the gorilla. But you know they go. Oh, there must be something

Don Wexler:

really good about that topic because look how long they were

Don Wexler:

on that page, and that starts moving up the rankings for that

Don Wexler:

page.

Janice Porter:

So that brings me to another question because

Janice Porter:

that's all changing. So I listened to somebody the other

Janice Porter:

day who was talking about the importance, and I don't know how

Janice Porter:

true it is and what kind of an expert she is, but I

Don Wexler:

may or may not be able to tell you. Go ahead.

Janice Porter:

No, but she was saying that it's really

Janice Porter:

important for small business owners now who are you know

Janice Porter:

actively using AI and actively using LinkedIn and and their

Janice Porter:

Websites flourishing, whatever, to create a page on their

Janice Porter:

website based on backlinks and based on information that will

Janice Porter:

then be picked up by AI. So she was saying that you should go to

Janice Porter:

AI in an incognito window, so and close all your AI stuff, and

Janice Porter:

then ask that LLM, whichever one you choose. I've done this

Janice Porter:

before, but not this. What they know about you, okay? Yeah,

Janice Porter:

yeah. And then also, so you take that information, put it on a on

Janice Porter:

a sheet, and then maybe even ask it, as I've done this before

Janice Porter:

too. Who are the top 10 LinkedIn trainers in Canada? Let's say,

Janice Porter:

and if I didn't show up on there, then I go back and I say,

Janice Porter:

I thought Janice Porter would be on there, and then oh, you're

Janice Porter:

right, she should be because she's her focus is blah blah

Janice Porter:

blah, and so now you're awakening the the the AI. But

Janice Porter:

then all of this should be put on a maybe a not a hidden page,

Janice Porter:

but it's not on the tabs on the top of your website, but it's a

Janice Porter:

page on your website with all that information, which will

Janice Porter:

help when somebody asks the question to their AI: Who's a

Janice Porter:

good LinkedIn trainer that focuses on relationships or

Janice Porter:

something? Right.

Don Wexler:

All right. So.

Janice Porter:

So, what do you think about all that?

Don Wexler:

Okay. So we're getting a little off topic, but

Don Wexler:

I can speak to. I know,

Janice Porter:

but I, I that because you said Google, Google,

Janice Porter:

Google. I think it's changing.

Don Wexler:

I'm not disagreeing.

Janice Porter:

Okay. Okay. Good. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

But before I get off the video thing in its entirety

Don Wexler:

for the moment, I'll come

Janice Porter:

back to it. I promise.

Don Wexler:

Okay. I was going to say one. I'm not. I'm not saying

Don Wexler:

it for that reason. No.

Janice Porter:

No. No. I understand. But I just thought

Janice Porter:

this was fascinating, and you would have a take on

Don Wexler:

it. Why it's all related.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. Okay.

Don Wexler:

So the AI engines, right? It's now they're it's

Don Wexler:

being called AEO. Yeah, talk to it's AIO, AEO, GEO,

Janice Porter:

they're all

Don Wexler:

right. All kind of in the same pool, and so is SEO.

Don Wexler:

It's all part of the same pool. But you still need a strong SEO

Don Wexler:

foundation for the AEO, GEO, whatever you want to call it, to

Don Wexler:

also be effective. Okay. Now we have another product, which I

Don Wexler:

don't even I don't even know if I've told you about this.

Janice Porter:

Maybe not.

Don Wexler:

It's another. We actually have a product called

Don Wexler:

Tofu Bofu. Have I

Unknown:

talked to you?

Janice Porter:

No.

Don Wexler:

Top of funnel, bottom of funnel.

Janice Porter:

Oh, okay. And

Don Wexler:

it's a it's a it's a company. We're rolling it out,

Don Wexler:

and it analyzes your presence across the internet.

Janice Porter:

See, I led into that for you.

Don Wexler:

That's what I'm saying. It was like a perfect. I

Don Wexler:

knew you didn't even know this. I was like, "All right, well,

Don Wexler:

this is kind of for

Unknown:

you,

Don Wexler:

right? Yeah, you know, we do a lot of things. I

Don Wexler:

mean, video is just a very small portion of what we do, and this

Don Wexler:

report will actually tell you how you rank across 25 queries

Don Wexler:

related to your industry and/or product,

Janice Porter:

okay,

Don Wexler:

and then where you rank against the top six

Don Wexler:

competitors, and it has a part of the report is a grid that for

Don Wexler:

each of the queries tells you where you stack up in the top

Don Wexler:

six AI platforms, which is you know Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini,

Don Wexler:

Copilot, Perplexity, one other one, and you know X's and pluses

Don Wexler:

depending on whether you whether you're in the hunt and where you

Don Wexler:

are relative to the other ones.

Janice Porter:

Interesting,

Don Wexler:

which is interesting,

Janice Porter:

yeah,

Don Wexler:

not entirely useful, which is why I mean, just the

Don Wexler:

knowledge is helpful, but it doesn't really help you, right?

Don Wexler:

Okay, I'm screwed. Now I know it. Thanks. Yeah,

Janice Porter:

yeah,

Don Wexler:

yeah. Awesome. So now we take it to the next

Don Wexler:

level, which is here's the changes you need to make to your

Don Wexler:

website, so it communicates more effectively to the AI bots as.

Don Wexler:

Well, it's called the LLMs. The LLMs, yeah, large language

Don Wexler:

learning models, right? And and then we also make suggestions

Don Wexler:

content-wise, and then we also provide the content. So we do

Don Wexler:

like 25 blog posts a month, 10 video scripts, and four

Don Wexler:

newsletters. So for one a week.

Janice Porter:

Okay.

Don Wexler:

So everything is geared towards ranking your site

Janice Porter:

higher

Don Wexler:

basis.

Janice Porter:

Interesting

Don Wexler:

more to get to get into the suggestions because

Don Wexler:

Google and the other search platforms,

Janice Porter:

as

Don Wexler:

we know it, are going away. It's changing

Don Wexler:

dramatically because no one's no one's doing short form searches

Don Wexler:

anymore. It's not like Mexican restaurant near me. No, who's

Don Wexler:

not? Yeah, who's got the best burrito in X Y Z City? You know,

Janice Porter:

interesting. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

So it's long form. These are all queries, and then

Don Wexler:

they dig down deeper. Okay, is that a wet burrito or a dry

Don Wexler:

burrito? You know, it's kind of like, you know, that's how

Don Wexler:

people are doing it, right? I'm really looking for this. So it's

Don Wexler:

that's how the searches are trending nowadays. It's not like

Don Wexler:

not like you know you know discount shoes is no longer the

Don Wexler:

search. That's how it used to be. Now it's getting into you

Don Wexler:

know I want this particular brand of yeah very

Janice Porter:

specific right yeah exactly I went on Siri the

Janice Porter:

other day on my phone to ask her something, and she said, "Would

Janice Porter:

you like me to check with Chat GPT on that?

Don Wexler:

Correct.

Janice Porter:

Can't you do it on your own anymore? You know.

Janice Porter:

By

Don Wexler:

the way, you know how we have like page one, page

Don Wexler:

two, page three of the results, search results.

Janice Porter:

Yes. Yes.

Don Wexler:

No more. It's going away. In fact, there's because

Don Wexler:

there's an old joke, which is, "Where's the best place to hide

Don Wexler:

a dead body? Page two of Google search, but no one goes there.

Janice Porter:

Oh yes, okay. Very simple.

Don Wexler:

Page one. So Google and the other search

Don Wexler:

engines-they're aware of this. They're not fools, so I get it.

Don Wexler:

They can see the traffic patterns. So there's just going

Don Wexler:

to be one page now, and if you don't if you don't get into the

Don Wexler:

AI results,

Janice Porter:

yes,

Don Wexler:

there's no page two, page three, nothing like.

Janice Porter:

Is that stressful for a lot of people?

Don Wexler:

Well, no, probably because most people don't know

Don Wexler:

it. Well, but then

Janice Porter:

okay, so when there's only one page, is it

Janice Porter:

still regional?

Don Wexler:

Do I tell you? ask the query.

Janice Porter:

Oh, okay, okay, right? Yeah, of course. Okay.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, it's

Don Wexler:

been all fashioned based on the query.

Janice Porter:

Okay. So

Don Wexler:

anyway, so the point is, it's everything's changing,

Don Wexler:

and it's like, but it's like a gold rush right now. Meaning, in

Don Wexler:

the early days of SEO, you could make changes and get your sites

Don Wexler:

ranked quickly, because nobody was knew what the hell they were

Don Wexler:

doing. Same thing now. You can get your site. You know, whereas

Don Wexler:

SEO may take six, 912, months to see real movement in SEO. You

Don Wexler:

know, if we move up the chain, get it done in days and weeks

Don Wexler:

now with AI and AI search because there's nobody. There's

Don Wexler:

so few people who are playing in that pool right now. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Now is a great time to create that moat around your business.

Don Wexler:

Oh, that's

Janice Porter:

good. Like that.

Unknown:

You're welcome.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So to

Don Wexler:

protect, to get it's like the way I fashion it is.

Don Wexler:

Remember the game King of the Hill when you were kids.

Don Wexler:

Remember eventually the Indian game. Anyway.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. We're

Don Wexler:

just the top of the dirt mound, and you're throwing

Don Wexler:

somebody else. Everybody wants to throw you off the top of the

Don Wexler:

dirt. Yeah, I'm the king of the

Janice Porter:

hill. Yeah, yeah,

Don Wexler:

king of hill. So that's kind of what it is. It

Don Wexler:

was

Janice Porter:

sexist back then, even.

Don Wexler:

Thank God, the old days, right? You're welcome.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

So yeah. Anyway, the point is, oh God, you're talking

Don Wexler:

to a long-haired liberal. Don't get me started. You can't see

Don Wexler:

the long hair, but it's. I

Janice Porter:

know, I know. Anyway,

Don Wexler:

I know. So the point is, it's it's a similar game,

Don Wexler:

right? What SEO is that game? You know, you want to get to the

Don Wexler:

top of the hill, which is the top of the rankings, and you

Don Wexler:

want to keep everybody else from supplanting you. So it's it's

Don Wexler:

what it

Janice Porter:

is. Okay, so let me shift that a little bit in

Janice Porter:

talking about being the top of the rankings and this kind of

Janice Porter:

thing.

Don Wexler:

Yeah,

Janice Porter:

I believe, and I could be totally off base, but I

Janice Porter:

believe that the people who worry about those things are

Janice Porter:

more transactional and they care more about you know numbers than

Janice Porter:

people. Now I could be totally wrong, and there are companies

Janice Porter:

where numbers always count. I know that. I know that numbers

Janice Porter:

always count. Yeah,

Don Wexler:

yeah. I don't. I hear my own. I'd say. I don't

Don Wexler:

know if there's a correlation between those two.

Janice Porter:

Okay, so different subject matter. I

Don Wexler:

think you can care about people, and still want to

Don Wexler:

make a lot of money.

Janice Porter:

That's true. Yeah. Okay. Right. Yeah. I don't

Don Wexler:

think they're. I don't think they're distinct.

Don Wexler:

Unfortunately, many times they're distinct, but they don't

Don Wexler:

have to be distinct.

Janice Porter:

Okay. Fair enough. All right. So it's just

Janice Porter:

your methods of however you.

Don Wexler:

Good example. When I was a young man, and I'm no

Don Wexler:

longer a young man, but when I was a young man, I've always

Don Wexler:

been able to sell. It's just a skill I had. Just

Janice Porter:

the gab, my dear. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

At least.

Janice Porter:

Yes.

Don Wexler:

And and for many years, I thought it was a curse

Don Wexler:

because I always I equated selling with manipulation,

Janice Porter:

really?

Don Wexler:

Oh yeah,

Janice Porter:

interesting. Yeah, I can see that though.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

and so I just was like, I can't believe I got this

Don Wexler:

skill that I can't. This is like cursed. Like I said, I was a

Don Wexler:

long-haired liberal, a lot of self-guilt. Yes, I

Janice Porter:

got it. Yeah, a lot of guilt. Berkeley, right?

Don Wexler:

Exactly right. Yeah, Berkeley. So, but then I got

Don Wexler:

into college. Actually, the first time I experienced the

Don Wexler:

benefit-we'll get forget it. I know too much detail, but the

Don Wexler:

bottom line is, my first company when I was 22 years old was

Don Wexler:

Natural Foods Distribution. I realized I could be using this

Don Wexler:

power for good. I put a super-I got a super costume thing, I

Don Wexler:

know. Yeah, I'm kidding, but but point is, no, I realize it's

Don Wexler:

contextual. It's how you use it. Okay,

Janice Porter:

okay. So, I I think I know that you had a

Janice Porter:

mastermind with peer groups. Is that right? Is this a long time

Janice Porter:

ago?

Don Wexler:

No, I currently it's one of my companies.

Janice Porter:

Oh, okay. So it's a mastermind with peer groups of

Janice Porter:

only three or four people.

Don Wexler:

No, I don't know what that refers to. Actually,

Janice Porter:

oh,

Don Wexler:

our company-it's different. It's called the

Don Wexler:

Business Acceleration Group.

Janice Porter:

Back to the drawing board. Okay, forget that

Janice Porter:

question. Bag

Don Wexler:

to the drawing board because the and the acronym is

Don Wexler:

bag, the business acceleration group, and our slogan is when it

Don Wexler:

comes to rapid business growth, it's in the bag.

Janice Porter:

Love it. So is that? I think a

Don Wexler:

marketer came up with that or something, wouldn't

Don Wexler:

you think? A marketer might have come up with that. Who knows?

Don Wexler:

Yeah.

Janice Porter:

How how often do they meet?

Don Wexler:

Monthly.

Janice Porter:

And do you run the mastermind?

Don Wexler:

I'm one of. I've got two partners in that one, and

Don Wexler:

I'm one of the partners. I'm one of the facilitators. Yeah.

Janice Porter:

Okay. And do you pick topic each month?

Don Wexler:

Oh yeah, we have a very specific training. So it's

Don Wexler:

not a networking group.

Janice Porter:

No, it's a mastermind group.

Don Wexler:

Correct. There's networking that happens

Don Wexler:

naturally, right? Sure. Yeah. That's not the end. I mean, so

Don Wexler:

who's in it?

Janice Porter:

Who, who, what kind of people are in these

Janice Porter:

groups?

Don Wexler:

Business owners.

Janice Porter:

Okay, people who

Don Wexler:

want to scale. The basically the idea is, how do

Don Wexler:

you scale from six figures to seven figures?

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

what gets you to six figures is very different. Yeah,

Don Wexler:

takes you from six to seven figures.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, so I understand.

Don Wexler:

Different process.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

so I mean, in the beginning, you can kind of just

Don Wexler:

muscle up.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

just sheer force of will, you know. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Eventually, you run out of you.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, exactly. Right.

Don Wexler:

It's kind of how it is. Usually, the founder is like

Don Wexler:

working their butt off.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

But eventually, it's like I got no more time. I'm

Don Wexler:

already maxed out. No

Janice Porter:

trust gets to be. You have to trust people.

Don Wexler:

Well, yeah. You better. I mean, you're gonna

Don Wexler:

need to bring people on because you can't do it yourself. It's

Don Wexler:

got to be

Janice Porter:

exactly.

Don Wexler:

And ideally, you don't want it to be you because,

Don Wexler:

a, if it's you, then that means there's no vacations.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

If you get sick, you're not getting paid. And

Don Wexler:

even the bigger point, when it comes time to sell the business,

Don Wexler:

if it's you,

Janice Porter:

yeah, there's nothing

Don Wexler:

to buy.

Janice Porter:

Right.

Don Wexler:

Because you were the business. Once you go away, so

Don Wexler:

goes the business. So ideally, you have it. You know, you want

Don Wexler:

to have it operating like a regular corporation,

Don Wexler:

essentially, or that nobody care. I mean, yeah, it matters

Don Wexler:

who the CEO is, but if the CEO leaves or gets hit by a bus, the

Don Wexler:

the business doesn't fold. It life goes on. You have to get a

Don Wexler:

new CEO potentially right, but but it's still yeah it's still

Don Wexler:

it's an operating business it's a systems and process business

Don Wexler:

not a personality based business

Janice Porter:

right right made me think of something so being

Janice Porter:

having your fingers in so many pies like you've got several

Janice Porter:

businesses going what's your focus what's your focus?

Don Wexler:

I don't have a focus. Well, I think you,

Janice Porter:

I think you change it. Is what I think, and

Janice Porter:

because right now you've been focused on talking to people

Janice Porter:

about the videos, but a month from now it might be something

Janice Porter:

else. So you

Don Wexler:

cycle through them. It's you know, what's my focus?

Don Wexler:

My focus is to make a lot of money so I can help a lot of

Don Wexler:

people. I'm one of these people that could live in a

Don Wexler:

refrigerator box under the freeway. I mean, I'm really I

Don Wexler:

could care less. I mean,

Janice Porter:

okay,

Don Wexler:

material things mean very little to me. It's it's a

Don Wexler:

transient high. You know, you get a shot of dopamine when you

Don Wexler:

buy the new thing, and then a week or two later, it's it's a

Don Wexler:

thing.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. Okay. So

Don Wexler:

that's why people have to constantly buy new stuff

Don Wexler:

to get the dopamine hit. But my dopamine hit is different,

Don Wexler:

right? I I don't really think I'm that important, so it gives

Don Wexler:

me advantage not having to curry to myself. So I I get my

Don Wexler:

happiness by improving the lives of the people around me. Because

Don Wexler:

I think ultimately, I think what the really really wealthy people

Don Wexler:

fail to realize, and that may not even be true for them, but I

Don Wexler:

think it's true, and that is happiness primarily is derived

Don Wexler:

not so much from the stuff you have around you as the happiness

Don Wexler:

of the people you have around you. If the people around you

Don Wexler:

are happy, that creates a very happy environment. People around

Don Wexler:

you are miserable. I don't care what you've got; it's not a fun

Don Wexler:

place to be hanging out.

Janice Porter:

Right. That's so true. It's so true. I

Don Wexler:

mean, I don't know. I think it's true, but I could

Don Wexler:

be. You know, I'm open being proven wrong.

Janice Porter:

No, I think it's right, but it also makes me

Janice Porter:

think of the question that I've been, I've heard a lot in the

Janice Porter:

last six months or so, and that's about with all the

Janice Porter:

technology pluses and and things that are expanding with

Janice Porter:

technology so fast. It seems to me that now is that most

Janice Porter:

important time to to stop, you know, stop the madness and pick

Janice Porter:

up the phone again, or or you know, go for coffee with

Janice Porter:

somebody again, or do something in person with people because we

Janice Porter:

need that, and we're not we don't get it as much anymore.

Don Wexler:

Yeah, I don't think it's an AI driven thing. I think

Don Wexler:

it's. I'll tell you when I first noticed it, which is well, I

Don Wexler:

didn't

Janice Porter:

say it was AI driven. It's just all

Janice Porter:

technology, period. But that's part of it, obviously.

Unknown:

I don't disagree

Don Wexler:

with you at all. In fact, I'll tell you what the

Don Wexler:

irony is. So remember the Walkman?

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Remember when those kids? Those are

Janice Porter:

the

Don Wexler:

80s.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, I think

Don Wexler:

so. I remember being on Bart. This was the Bay Area

Don Wexler:

Rapids. Yeah, I know

Janice Porter:

that is. I've been there. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

In the Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area, which is

Don Wexler:

where I am, and I remember being on Bart and watching having

Don Wexler:

several people on the train with the ear, no earphones, right?

Don Wexler:

Wasn't but headsets on with the with their Walkman,

Janice Porter:

yeah,

Don Wexler:

watching how there was no eye contact, there was no

Don Wexler:

interaction. I remember in the eighth thinking, this is going

Don Wexler:

to lead in a bad direction. I remember that in the 80s, and

Don Wexler:

this is just a natural extension of that, right? This is as the

Don Wexler:

kids are more into their phones. I mean, look at people walking

Don Wexler:

across the street, looking down without even looking. I know.

Janice Porter:

I just stand there and wait them to bump into

Janice Porter:

me.

Don Wexler:

Crazy.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

But that's you know. And so here's what I've told my.

Don Wexler:

I've raised a lot of kids. I think we've talked about this,

Don Wexler:

but what I've always told my kids is there's two skills that

Don Wexler:

if you possess them, there'll always be a place for you no

Don Wexler:

matter what happens, and that's the ability to communicate your

Don Wexler:

ideas in writing and your ability to communicate your

Don Wexler:

ideas to a group

Janice Porter:

because it's

Don Wexler:

still people at least before at least during my

Don Wexler:

lifetime. You know, after I'm gone, maybe in 100 years it'll

Don Wexler:

be robots talking to robots or something. I don't know, but as

Don Wexler:

far as I know, it's still business deals are still made

Don Wexler:

one person to one person at some point, and you've got to be able

Don Wexler:

to communicate and cogent, well thought through thoughts, and

Don Wexler:

it's starting to wane. I mean, the kids are having harder

Don Wexler:

times. I've noticed communicating with each other

Don Wexler:

because they practice. It's just it's a practice. It's a muscle.

Don Wexler:

Certain

Janice Porter:

generations, you know, don't

Don Wexler:

exercise the muscle. I mean,

Janice Porter:

I see it between my two daughters' generations.

Janice Porter:

They're in one's a Gen Xer and one's a millennial, and it's

Janice Porter:

like very different, very different, and it's it just

Janice Porter:

seems to be getting. Oh well, you look at my granddaughter;

Janice Porter:

like she wants to be on the any kind of screen anytime soon. You

Janice Porter:

know, all the world,

Don Wexler:

right? That's the world she's put up in. So now I

Don Wexler:

don't want to get into parenting advice because not why we're

Don Wexler:

here. But I would say you guys suck. No, I turned cable

Don Wexler:

television off in the early

Janice Porter:

'90s

Don Wexler:

because I and I told my kids no video games. They

Don Wexler:

could play them at their friends' houses. That's fine,

Don Wexler:

but in our house, none of that. We had we would watch DVD. You

Don Wexler:

know, oh no, excuse me, VHS tapes. Yes, yes, right back in

Don Wexler:

the day of VHS, right? And beta, beta. Anyway. Yeah. And but I

Don Wexler:

told you, you know, I wanted them active. You know, nobody's

Don Wexler:

sitting on the couch is the point.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Your friend's house, and they do. That's fine. That's

Don Wexler:

their business. That's not. I'm not going to try to go crazy

Don Wexler:

about it. But we were involved in sports, and you know, hiking,

Don Wexler:

whatever it might have been, just outside doing stuff, and

Don Wexler:

unfortunately, a lot of times these you know nowadays they're

Don Wexler:

just and I get it. I mean, I sit in front of a computer a lot.

Janice Porter:

Me too.

Don Wexler:

There's a new world than from when I was you know.

Don Wexler:

Oh,

Janice Porter:

totally. Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Yeah. So it's all about

Janice Porter:

balance with anybody. It's really all about

Janice Porter:

balance.

Don Wexler:

Well, see, that's the thing. I don't think there's

Don Wexler:

such a thing. I've thought about this. I think there's, I think

Don Wexler:

there's extremes one way or the other at different times. At

Don Wexler:

least for me, well, no,

Janice Porter:

I agree with you. Like I don't think there's life

Janice Porter:

work balance. I don't believe in that. Right. No, but there is

Janice Porter:

balance for what's for you. Is all. Oh, I see. Like for whoever

Janice Porter:

that person is. Yeah, that's

Don Wexler:

fair.

Janice Porter:

I totally agree with you that way. Okay, let's

Janice Porter:

get back on track a little bit because I want to know with all

Janice Porter:

this with all this technology and all of these automate you

Janice Porter:

know these things that we can automate. Is there one thing

Janice Porter:

that you think a business owner should never automate?

Don Wexler:

Well, back to those two points: the ability to

Don Wexler:

communicate their ideas and write in, be able to communicate

Don Wexler:

their ideas to a group and and to you know another person.

Don Wexler:

Yeah, I think to me that's critical because people like to

Don Wexler:

be you have to be able to trust who you're doing business with.

Don Wexler:

You do.

Janice Porter:

You have

Don Wexler:

to get along. You could have a completely aligned

Don Wexler:

in. Well, you know there are countries who don't get along

Don Wexler:

who still manage to figure how to work together, right? So, so

Don Wexler:

like you don't have to like the other person, but I think it's

Don Wexler:

important that you understand their motivation and determine

Don Wexler:

whether or not their motivation and how they think is a match

Don Wexler:

for what you want in your life and your business. Because, you

Don Wexler:

know, we've all had clients who are nightmare clients, you know,

Don Wexler:

and who needs a bunch of those? So if you're if you don't have

Don Wexler:

the ability to recognize who's in your tribe, so to speak,

Don Wexler:

philosophically, and who's not, then again, there's there's few

Don Wexler:

things worse than having a lot of clients who are unhappy or

Don Wexler:

who clash with the way you operate.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, it doesn't work. Doesn't work. Perfect.

Don Wexler:

I've been there. I've done it to myself, and you

Don Wexler:

know it was tough.

Janice Porter:

So I'm I'm actually curious to know, you

Janice Porter:

know, people form an opinion of us online before they even say

Janice Porter:

hi to us ever, right? They go and check us out online, and I

Janice Porter:

keep wondering because I haven't put it up yet because it's not

Janice Porter:

quite finished. But when I put that video up, it's not me. It's

Janice Porter:

an AI spokesperson who, by the way, says so right away, and I

Janice Porter:

love that.

Don Wexler:

Right, it's not claiming to be you. No point.

Janice Porter:

No, exactly. And I'm wondering whether it will

Janice Porter:

seem novel to people, whether it will seem weird, you know. So

Janice Porter:

I'm like, I just, I'm anxious to see what.

Don Wexler:

I'm going to say yes and yes and yes and yes. Okay,

Don Wexler:

okay.

Janice Porter:

So, so what have what have people said to you

Janice Porter:

once they've done these things and put them out?

Don Wexler:

They said, if I ever see you darken my door again,

Janice Porter:

shouldn't have asked that loaded question. Got

Janice Porter:

it. That's right. Yeah. Okay.

Don Wexler:

You get the whole you get the whole swath, right?

Janice Porter:

Okay. But

Don Wexler:

most the reality is the reason why we disclose it

Don Wexler:

because we don't want people focusing on the. We're not

Don Wexler:

trying to trick anybody. No, I

Janice Porter:

know. I know.

Don Wexler:

That's where the trust is broken. That's the

Don Wexler:

whole point. We're trying to we're trying to build right by

Don Wexler:

having getting reviews out into the world about these party

Don Wexler:

endorsements, which is effectively what reviews are.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

Right. So the person saying you're awesome. Well,

Don Wexler:

that's a very valuable thing. So you don't want to degrade that

Don Wexler:

by trying to have by somebody perceiving that that you're

Don Wexler:

trying to fool them.

Janice Porter:

Right. Of course. We want

Don Wexler:

people focusing on the message, not the messenger.

Janice Porter:

Yeah.

Don Wexler:

You still need to get the message out there, and

Don Wexler:

your time is valuable. So you don't have a lot of time to go.

Don Wexler:

And plus, you saying, "Hey, Sally thought I'm freaking

Janice Porter:

the bum, comes

Don Wexler:

across very different than you know not you

Don Wexler:

saying that.

Janice Porter:

Yes, exactly. So

Don Wexler:

that third party endorsement, and of course,

Don Wexler:

Sally. Good luck getting Sally on the camera.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, I

Don Wexler:

mean, Sally, she, you know, I'm

Janice Porter:

happy to write a

Don Wexler:

review for you, but screw the camera. No way, I'm

Don Wexler:

not going on. So, what are your options, right? Your stuff with

Don Wexler:

text, which does it's marginally it's effective, better than

Don Wexler:

nothing.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, but it's not

Don Wexler:

nearly as effective or or ability to be transmitted

Don Wexler:

as a video can be. So we're we're straddling that line,

Don Wexler:

right?

Janice Porter:

Yes. Yeah. So do you think it's effect? It would

Janice Porter:

be effective to post it as a post first.

Don Wexler:

I don't think there's a first, second, or

Don Wexler:

third. I think that's you just be a buckshot.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

take a buckshot. It. There's no because not everybody

Don Wexler:

hangs out everywhere.

Janice Porter:

That's right. That's right. I don't know. I'm

Janice Porter:

just

Don Wexler:

see different people are going to see it in different

Don Wexler:

places.

Janice Porter:

Yeah. Okay. That's cool. Yeah. So, where

Janice Porter:

where did you come? Like, did you have people or somebody in

Janice Porter:

particular in your life a relationship that changed the

Janice Porter:

course of your trajectory? And if so, what did you do to

Janice Porter:

nurture that away from the porn? Now, and we're not talking about

Janice Porter:

the porn.

Don Wexler:

Oh, okay. That pretty much ends the

Don Wexler:

conversation, doesn't it? I mean, well, we're getting there.

Don Wexler:

So yeah, I would say this. I would say just exactly contrary

Don Wexler:

to what you're saying.

Janice Porter:

Okay.

Don Wexler:

People have tried to change my trajectory my whole

Don Wexler:

life.

Janice Porter:

Okay.

Don Wexler:

And I've just been incorrigible.

Janice Porter:

Got it. You were that kid that wasn't labeled

Janice Porter:

back in school. That now everybody's labeling. You know,

Janice Porter:

with every. Oh

Don Wexler:

no, I was labeled in school. Oh, you were. Oh yeah.

Don Wexler:

Oh yeah. I think back

Janice Porter:

then they didn't know what to do with

Don Wexler:

people. Oh no, I think the teachers drew straws

Don Wexler:

as. Next year, I'm pretty sure that was the label I had. He

Janice Porter:

got it.

Don Wexler:

So yeah, no, I was not. People were not enthused to

Don Wexler:

have me in their class. Disruptive? Would you

Janice Porter:

say disruptive? I'd say

Don Wexler:

that's a very kind description.

Janice Porter:

Okay. Yeah. All right. Well.

Don Wexler:

So, but I would say that the event that changed the

Don Wexler:

course of my direction was moving from New Jersey to

Don Wexler:

California

Janice Porter:

to go to school.

Don Wexler:

Well, my my dad got transferred. This was in seventh

Don Wexler:

grade, so between my seventh grade and my seventh grade.

Don Wexler:

Okay, you moved to

Janice Porter:

okay. Oh, but I'm

Don Wexler:

I'm an East Coast kid. I mean, I was brought up.

Don Wexler:

I'm a I'm a New Jersey kid.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

and not necessarily the positive aspects of that.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

but by coming to California, I mean that was a

Don Wexler:

pretty I was it was pretty repressive when in the 60s when

Don Wexler:

I was you know growing up.

Janice Porter:

Okay,

Don Wexler:

and I'm an old fart. So, but when we came to

Don Wexler:

California, I felt like oh my god,

Janice Porter:

different right.

Don Wexler:

It's like this is great. This is

Don Wexler:

everything. I was hope. I mean, this is what life should be

Don Wexler:

like, right? You know. So yeah. I mean, I really blossomed. I'd

Don Wexler:

say that was the a major. I had a lot of epiphanies when I was

Don Wexler:

in the East Coast, but no solutions. Like California was

Don Wexler:

the solution for me.

Janice Porter:

Really, well, was it the what was it? Was it the

Janice Porter:

the ocean and the sunshine? No, no,

Don Wexler:

no. It was well, it was simple stuff. I'll give you

Don Wexler:

a classic example. So, East Coast, you know, has weather.

Don Wexler:

They have things called snow.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

California, we don't have these things in the in the

Don Wexler:

Bay Mountains, sure.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

but in the East Coast, because of the weather,

Don Wexler:

you were in brick buildings, like apartment buildings.

Don Wexler:

Everything was indoors.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

this was not me.

Janice Porter:

Got it.

Don Wexler:

When we came to California with the first day of

Don Wexler:

school, you had to go outside between classes. I couldn't

Don Wexler:

believe it. I actually got in trouble for not for hiding

Don Wexler:

outside in the East Coast, in between, like for lunch, they

Don Wexler:

had to go in the cafeteria to eat, and I would hide behind a

Don Wexler:

big rock and eat lunch. That wouldn't be outside, and they I

Don Wexler:

get busted for it because I know it's against the rules or

Don Wexler:

whatever. Came out here, like wait a minute. Now also in the

Don Wexler:

East Coast, there was a dress code, slacks, button down shirt,

Don Wexler:

no tennis shoes, no white socks. Unlike Greece would have you

Don Wexler:

believe, no white socks.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

you were. Yeah, it was it was like quasi private

Don Wexler:

school, kind of like you know, kind of a not uniform, uniform,

Don Wexler:

but you know, you had came out here. Everybody's in t-shirts

Don Wexler:

and jeans and and tennis shoes or sneakers, as we called them

Don Wexler:

East Coast.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

I had to. It took me three days to convince my

Don Wexler:

parents that I wasn't lying.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, you know that's big culture shock for

Janice Porter:

sure. Yeah, it wasn't a

Don Wexler:

shock for me. It wasn't shock. It was fantastic.

Don Wexler:

It was like this was like any far the farthest thing from

Don Wexler:

shock you could have. It was like, yeah, baby. I felt more

Janice Porter:

like you. Yeah, that's interesting.

Don Wexler:

Totally. Yeah, that's so

Janice Porter:

fun. Well, I had culture shock when I was nine.

Janice Porter:

We came from England to to Vancouver, and my sister was

Janice Porter:

six, and we came in the summer. And then that September we went

Janice Porter:

to start school, and brought our report cards and whatever. And I

Janice Porter:

was 10 that September, like I just turned 10, and they put me

Janice Porter:

into sixth grade, and yeah, exactly. And my sister was just

Janice Porter:

turned seven in September, and they put her in third grade.

Don Wexler:

Why was that?

Janice Porter:

Because we went to school when we were four and

Janice Porter:

a half in England, and we had brilliant report cards, so they

Janice Porter:

thought we were super smart. But being that much younger was a

Janice Porter:

bit of a culture shock, for sure. Anyway, that's my brother.

Don Wexler:

My brother was a very bright guy. He's a

Don Wexler:

mechanical engineering professor, actually, and one of

Don Wexler:

the foremost authorities in the world, I must say, with regards

Don Wexler:

to air particle pollution.

Janice Porter:

Oh, cool!

Don Wexler:

He gets flown all over the world to analyze air. I

Don Wexler:

mean, it's interesting.

Janice Porter:

Yeah,

Don Wexler:

but he was a December baby, and my parents

Don Wexler:

put him in early, so he was always one of the smallest kids

Don Wexler:

in his class.

Janice Porter:

Yeah, so

Don Wexler:

he was never encouraged to be physical.

Janice Porter:

Oh, right.

Don Wexler:

So he never got into sports and stuff. Yeah,

Janice Porter:

because he was the baby. Yeah,

Don Wexler:

right. He was a little guy, and then he

Janice Porter:

developed to the rest of them. Yeah,

Don Wexler:

correct. Whereas I was always like the biggest kid

Don Wexler:

or second biggest kid in my class, I'm an April baby, but I

Don Wexler:

just grew up fast. But I stopped early. You know, not like I was

Don Wexler:

big at the time, but I stopped like in ninth grade. Yeah, and

Don Wexler:

so I was always very physical, and and you know, and that led

Don Wexler:

to again. This is in New Jersey, so it led to a lot of fighting.

Don Wexler:

I'll just say it was it was it was an interesting way to

Don Wexler:

express things.

Janice Porter:

We all have our own stories, correct?

Don Wexler:

But when we came to California, my uncle did say he

Don Wexler:

was a when I was my mid 20s. He said he how surprised he was

Don Wexler:

that I was doing as well as I was because the whole family

Don Wexler:

thought I was going to go. Jail, so

Janice Porter:

well. So

Don Wexler:

I've asked some of my cousins,

Janice Porter:

yeah, and they

Don Wexler:

were like, "Oh yeah, yeah, we thought you was gonna

Don Wexler:

go to jail. This is which is a badge of to me, it's a badge of

Don Wexler:

honor, but it cracks me up.

Janice Porter:

My God

Don Wexler:

tells you how the difference was from the East

Don Wexler:

Coast one. Yeah, that's amazing.

Don Wexler:

Like a flip switch or a switch flipped or yeah, yeah. It was

Don Wexler:

just incredible. It was the shift was dramatic.

Janice Porter:

That's very yeah. Well, that's an interesting

Janice Porter:

story. Thank you for sharing that. Thank you for being here.

Janice Porter:

Thanks for sharing. Thanks for sharing your story and your and

Janice Porter:

your insights today. Because you you know you're a marketer, true

Janice Porter:

and true. There's no, there's no question there, and I'd love to

Janice Porter:

spend some more time talking marketing because that's how I

Janice Porter:

learn. Well, let's do

Don Wexler:

that. Yeah, I'm sorry if I went down these. No,

Don Wexler:

that's okay.

Janice Porter:

Partly that was my fault. No, no, it's all good.

Janice Porter:

If so, to my audience, if if any of this conversation sparked an

Janice Porter:

idea for you, reach out to Don through the links in the show

Janice Porter:

notes, which will be whichever websites you want me to put on

Janice Porter:

there, or where you want me to send them, and you can tell me

Janice Porter:

right now what you're thinking if you want. Like, do you want

Janice Porter:

them to go to the video one, or do you want? Oh

Don Wexler:

goodness! Okay, think about

Janice Porter:

it after then. That's okay. Yeah, I've got

Don Wexler:

I've got an idea mulling around. They also the

Don Wexler:

parent company.

Janice Porter:

Yes. So Don has many irons in the fire, and

Janice Porter:

Janice Porter:

something that will help you along the way, and I want you to

Janice Porter:

Janice Porter:

colleague how much you appreciate them because that's

Janice Porter:

what those videos are about too-is showing appreciation. And

Janice Porter:

remember to stay connected and be remembered. Thank you for

Janice Porter:

being here.

Don Wexler:

And would everybody just take a look at that

Don Wexler:

beautiful face?

Janice Porter:

Oh,

Don Wexler:

would everyone just look at that face? Look at that

Don Wexler:

smile.

Janice Porter:

Thank you, Don.

Don Wexler:

You're welcome.

Janice Porter:

Bye for now.

Don Wexler:

Bye bye.
