From Reaction to Choice: Nervous System Regulation and Limiting Beliefs

From Reaction to Choice: Nervous System Regulation and Limiting Beliefs

How can nervous system regulation help when stress, self-doubt, or fear of making mistakes leaves you feeling stuck?

Sometimes the most challenging moments aren't about what is happening around us, but about the thoughts and beliefs that arise within us. A conversation, an unfamiliar situation, or the possibility of being judged may bring up reactions that feel surprisingly difficult to navigate.

In this episode of Brain Health & Healing, Sandra Lee explores the connection between nervous system regulation, limiting beliefs, and the ways earlier experiences may influence how we respond to everyday life.

Drawing from her own experiences of feeling isolated, fearing mistakes, and struggling to express herself, Sandra reflects on how deeply held beliefs can shape our sense of safety, confidence, and ability to take action.

She also considers why learning to recognize these patterns may be meaningful for people navigating brain health challenges, as well as anyone who has experienced overwhelm, hesitation, or difficulty feeling comfortable being themselves.

As you listen, consider: When an old reaction begins to surface, what might become possible if you could pause and ask yourself how you want to respond now?

What You’re Invited to Discover:

  • The beliefs formed through early experiences that may still influence how safe you feel expressing yourself today.
  • When fear of making mistakes becomes more than a passing concern—and what that experience may reveal.
  • A different way to consider the connection between self-talk, emotional reactions, and nervous system regulation.
  • The possibility of recognizing familiar patterns without allowing them to determine every response.
  • Where a moment of pause might create room for greater self-awareness, intentional choice, and the freedom to be yourself.

Sandra Lee has spent almost 40 years helping people feel and function better by addressing what standard treatment often misses: the unresolved trauma and emotional patterns stored in the body. She is the creator of The Spectrum of Anger™ and The Witnessed Body™, which integrates Intuitive Sound Healing and Combat Brain Training to support brain injury recovery, brain health, and dementia. Her work is grounded in the belief that symptoms are messages, not malfunctions, and that when those messages are finally received and released, the body can do what it already knows how to do.

Sandra Lee:

Welcome to Brain Health and Healing. I'm Sandra

Sandra Lee:

Lee. This show is for people living with head injuries and

Sandra Lee:

the families and supporters who love them. If you are ready to

Sandra Lee:

reclaim your life, identity, and dreams for the future, you are

Sandra Lee:

in the right place. Today, for better brain briefs, I am

Sandra Lee:

talking about nervous system regulation. So, I am talking

Sandra Lee:

about brain injuries, helping people recover from strokes,

Sandra Lee:

falls, accidents, but also being able to focus and helping people

Sandra Lee:

to have more clear thoughts, memories, the ability to think

Sandra Lee:

clearly, and to maintain the ability to think clearly

Sandra Lee:

throughout all of life. So, when we are talking about stress and

Sandra Lee:

situations where we tend to get all sorts of agitation and

Sandra Lee:

upset, are people going to like me? I don't know what I'm doing.

Sandra Lee:

How can I be heard and seen? All the things that people in

Sandra Lee:

general struggle with in life, these happen for everybody,

Sandra Lee:

whether or not you've had an injury actually to the brain. I

Sandra Lee:

think of them as being thought injuries and belief injuries-the

Sandra Lee:

ways in which I stop myself with just my thoughts, with how I

Sandra Lee:

feel about things, the way I look at myself as being limited

Sandra Lee:

in life. If I say this, this person is going to like me. Do

Sandra Lee:

these people like me at all? I don't know how to be myself out

Sandra Lee:

there in the world with other people. This is something that

Sandra Lee:

people in general struggle with all of the time, and I am

Sandra Lee:

familiar with this myself. So up until last year, like 2025, when

Sandra Lee:

I did the big neuro linguistic programming training that I did,

Sandra Lee:

I was afraid of bothering people so much that I was paralyzed

Sandra Lee:

around making phone calls, and I was so afraid of making mistakes

Sandra Lee:

that it's like keeping me from taking action. These are the

Sandra Lee:

kinds of things that stop everybody, that stop people from

Sandra Lee:

being themselves, being able to start a conversation, being able

Sandra Lee:

to go out in public because I'm afraid that people aren't going

Sandra Lee:

to like me. What are people going to think? All of these

Sandra Lee:

really pretty crazy thoughts that get people stuck. So today

Sandra Lee:

I am talking about nervous system regulation, and how can

Sandra Lee:

I, when I have all of these crazy thoughts going on, how can

Sandra Lee:

I pause, Calm down. Center in being myself, just being myself

Sandra Lee:

in the world, and feeling safe enough to be able to do things

Sandra Lee:

like start a conversation, or go to a networking meeting, or for

Sandra Lee:

younger people, you know, go to school and interact with other

Sandra Lee:

people. I remember when I was in high school, I was like I felt

Sandra Lee:

completely isolated in a school with many hundreds of people. I

Sandra Lee:

remember standing there in what was the playground, you know,

Sandra Lee:

the the place where everybody's around outside, and it's like

Sandra Lee:

feeling like here's me all by myself, and all these people are

Sandra Lee:

wandering around talking to each other and interacting, and me

Sandra Lee:

just be here by myself, afraid to go up and start a

Sandra Lee:

conversation because it's like I wasn't comfortable with myself.

Sandra Lee:

I wasn't comfortable being myself and speaking with other

Sandra Lee:

people, much less starting conversations, and it just felt

Sandra Lee:

weird, you know, going going up to groups of people and just

Sandra Lee:

feeling like everybody else is interacting, and here I am by

Sandra Lee:

myself, not participating, and so there's this stress, this

Sandra Lee:

conversation going on in mind. All the self talk, self talk is

Sandra Lee:

crazy making, and it was all self generated. It wasn't coming

Sandra Lee:

from anybody saying anything mean to me. It was all just me

Sandra Lee:

taking the things from early in my life that led me to believe

Sandra Lee:

that I couldn't be seen and heard. I couldn't be myself. I'm

Sandra Lee:

not safe to, you know. It's like I used to feel like everything I

Sandra Lee:

did was a mistake, and everything I did and said was

Sandra Lee:

wrong. Those are understandable conclusions that many people

Sandra Lee:

make from childhood and interacting with authority

Sandra Lee:

figures like parents, leading to all kinds of beliefs about self

Sandra Lee:

that are limiting, keeping me from being able to be myself in

Sandra Lee:

the world, expressing myself, asking for what I need, saying

Sandra Lee:

how I feel, all these things. You know, used to be that if you

Sandra Lee:

asked me how I felt, I didn't know. Confused, shut down in

Sandra Lee:

response to the question. What do you want? I don't know. Shut

Sandra Lee:

down and withdraw.

Sandra Lee:

So, if you or people in your life, people in your family,

Sandra Lee:

friends of yours, family members have this kind of response where

Sandra Lee:

they don't feel like they can be themselves, once you know I can

Sandra Lee:

help, helping you to integrate the experiences in your mind, so

Sandra Lee:

you have the ability to be in the flow, be yourself, and

Sandra Lee:

express yourself, and then at a deeper level, to go in and work

Sandra Lee:

with the actual beliefs, the things that happened in the past

Sandra Lee:

that led to the formation of those beliefs, and I have to

Sandra Lee:

tell you, the things that happen don't necessarily have to be

Sandra Lee:

really like from the outside world traumatic. Normal events

Sandra Lee:

to a small child can feel extraordinarily significant and

Sandra Lee:

traumatic and meaningful. The things that happened to me when

Sandra Lee:

I was just like really small-they were normal things

Sandra Lee:

that you and I, as adults today, wouldn't see as there's no no

Sandra Lee:

problem with them. They are normal things to occur, normal

Sandra Lee:

events. But to a small child, to a baby, to a toddler, those

Sandra Lee:

things can be massive, leading to the formation of beliefs

Sandra Lee:

about self that are limiting, that can be limiting for the

Sandra Lee:

person all the way through their life into adulthood. I am what,

Sandra Lee:

62 years old, and I did not do the major healing of these

Sandra Lee:

beliefs, the things that happened when I was very young.

Sandra Lee:

I didn't heal these things until last year, 2025, and it has

Sandra Lee:

affected me in my life all the way up until today. Normal

Sandra Lee:

events early in life lead to beliefs and thoughts that are

Sandra Lee:

limiting, and the nervous system gets up when situations come up

Sandra Lee:

that trigger those issues, and all the chaos, all the

Sandra Lee:

craziness, all of the ineffective responses, clamming

Sandra Lee:

up, shutting down, quitting, ineffective responses, not

Sandra Lee:

starting conversations, taking things personally when somebody

Sandra Lee:

says something, ineffective responses. This what happens

Sandra Lee:

when the nervous system gets ah crazy in response to having old

Sandra Lee:

things from the past get triggered by somebody saying

Sandra Lee:

something normal in life today, or a situation of wanting to

Sandra Lee:

start a conversation, and it's like

Sandra Lee:

I don't know how to do that. I used to feel confused, shut

Sandra Lee:

down, quit, run away, give up. Ineffective responses with the

Sandra Lee:

work that I do supporting people in being in flow, not being

Sandra Lee:

stuck in your brain, allowing that to flow, and then.

Sandra Lee:

When, when possible, when necessary, to go back to the

Sandra Lee:

things in the past that created the triggers in the first place,

Sandra Lee:

and again, there doesn't necessarily need to have been

Sandra Lee:

anything that's truly traumatic, because a child interprets

Sandra Lee:

normal events in a totally different way than you and I, as

Sandra Lee:

adults, interpret them, can be life-changing. The decisions

Sandra Lee:

that get made at six months old, something happened that was

Sandra Lee:

normal, but I made decisions that limited me all the way

Sandra Lee:

until 2025. Learning to manage these things and then actually

Sandra Lee:

heal them, make it so they're no longer triggers. I used to be so

Sandra Lee:

afraid of making mistakes that I was paralyzed. I thought that if

Sandra Lee:

I make a mistake, it's going to be the end of not just the

Sandra Lee:

world, not just of me, but of everything-the whole

Sandra Lee:

universe-which is not logical. But from a baby's perspective, a

Sandra Lee:

baby thinks they're the center of everything. So something

Sandra Lee:

happened that led me to feel like led me to believe that if I

Sandra Lee:

made a mistake, it was the end of the universe. Why would I do

Sandra Lee:

anything that risks making a mistake? I wouldn't. So I was

Sandra Lee:

paralyzed, which is crazy. Now I have resolved that. So now I

Sandra Lee:

have a normal level of concern about making mistakes. Normal

Sandra Lee:

level, as opposed to shut down everything and go home because

Sandra Lee:

that's what I used to do. Really, so learning to have your

Sandra Lee:

nervous system be able to, when faced with something, just be

Sandra Lee:

calm, be able to sit back, pause, think. As let's go, this

Sandra Lee:

has come up. What do I want to do? And be able to pause and sit

Sandra Lee:

back and think about it. And I was like, okay, so what do I

Sandra Lee:

want to do? This happened, and it triggered me, and I reacted,

Sandra Lee:

and I feel. But I don't want to be that way now. What do I want

Sandra Lee:

to do? How do I want to be now? And it's a choice. Being able to

Sandra Lee:

calm the nervous system down, tone down the reaction, and sit

Sandra Lee:

back inside myself,

Sandra Lee:

Stay myself, and be able to think about it calmly, and come

Sandra Lee:

to a decision. What do I want to do right now?

Sandra Lee:

And have it be a conscious choice, an intentional choice

Sandra Lee:

about how I choose to be in the moment. Is that something that

Sandra Lee:

would be of use to you? Again, this happens all of the time.

Sandra Lee:

The need for this happens all of the time for people who have had

Sandra Lee:

actual injuries to the brain, fall and concussion. There's

Sandra Lee:

there's parts of the brain that aren't working well anymore, and

Sandra Lee:

so a lot of symptoms and function are affected, leading

Sandra Lee:

to this chaos. And learning to be able to calm that down help

Sandra Lee:

the brain to be able to repair itself and establish connections

Sandra Lee:

and function better, to be able to stay calm in the moment and

Sandra Lee:

choose how to be, and to regain abilities to do things normally.

Sandra Lee:

But even if you don't have an injury to the brain, this

Sandra Lee:

chaotic state can happen frequently. Used to happen to me

Sandra Lee:

every time I tried to do anything relating to business.

Sandra Lee:

Panic, freak out, overwhelmed. Go home. I'm out of here. Not

Sandra Lee:

effective. Learning to resolve those things and to be able to

Sandra Lee:

regulate my nervous system. So when triggered, I was like, I

Sandra Lee:

can pause. I was like, wait a minute, this is going on. I

Sandra Lee:

don't want to do that now. What do I want? If this is something

Sandra Lee:

that you would benefit from, with or without an injury to the

Sandra Lee:

brain, I would love to talk with you. You can schedule a

Sandra Lee:

10-minute share your story call with me, and it's not a sales

Sandra Lee:

call. Just giving you an opportunity to tell me about

Sandra Lee:

these are the things that go on for me, and what I want is

Sandra Lee:

instead there is a link to the share your story call scheduling

Sandra Lee:

down below, and I look forward to talking with you. Like, what

Sandra Lee:

is your experience? And then, if you decide you actually want to

Sandra Lee:

work with me, we can find another time for that. But for

Sandra Lee:

now, just schedule a talk. This is brain health and healing,

Sandra Lee:

receiving versatile gifts. Thank you. I am Sandra Lee.
