Building a family legacy isn't simply about how much money you leave behind. Scott Donnell joins Loral Langemeier to explain why inheritance is what you leave to someone, while legacy is what you leave in them, including values, beliefs, relationships, stewardship, generosity, and the ability to create and manage wealth wisely.
Scott explains why building a family legacy means preparing children and grandchildren to handle wealth rather than simply handing it to them. He also shares how setbacks shaped his own journey and why learning through failure can create humility, wisdom, and new opportunities.
The conversation also explores Scott's book Kingdom Habits, his faith-based approach to money, and the danger of allowing the constant pursuit of more to become the focus of your life. Ultimately, building a family legacy means putting money in its proper place while passing down the values, wisdom, faith, and foundation future generations need to thrive.

Hey, this is Loral. Welcome back to Loral's
Loral Langemeier:Real Money Talks, a podcast about money. We talk about how
Loral Langemeier:to make it, how to keep it, how to invest it, why you need a
Loral Langemeier:team. There's no such thing as a self-made millionaire. We're
Loral Langemeier:team-made. We support each other, and there has to be some
Loral Langemeier:collaboration and integration. The financial services world is
Loral Langemeier:extremely segregated intentionally by licenses, and
Loral Langemeier:my job has been to bring people together, advocate the
Loral Langemeier:integration of your financial wealth team must talk to each
Loral Langemeier:other or you don't really have a plan. Today I have I'm going to
Loral Langemeier:call him a dear friend. We haven't known each other that
Loral Langemeier:long, but our missions have been so aligned, both faith-based.
Loral Langemeier:I'm going to just lead that out because he just wrote a book
Loral Langemeier:that I can't wait for him to share about his faith and his
Loral Langemeier:journey has been amazing. Scott Dennell's with me, visionary
Loral Langemeier:entrepreneur. We're both unemployable people. So, Scott,
Loral Langemeier:welcome. Talk about talk about your journey a little bit
Loral Langemeier:because I think it's inspirational. Because you know,
Loral Langemeier:some people could have seen it as you know failing. I mean, I
Loral Langemeier:got lots of those chapters too, and I saw it as a huge
Loral Langemeier:transition to actually the biggest work you'll probably
Loral Langemeier:ever do.
Scott Donnell:Yeah, yeah. Well, if you and I had resumes. If we
Scott Donnell:cared about resumes, I guess we'd have pretty cool ones. We
Scott Donnell:would. They'd be
Loral Langemeier:aligned too. They have very similar paths.
Scott Donnell:Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, I think it's been a wild,
Scott Donnell:you know, 20 years in business. 12 companies, 12 million
Scott Donnell:families we've served. We've, at one point, I was the leading
Scott Donnell:expert in financial competencies for young kids. We've done 5000
Scott Donnell:kids business fairs. We help families all over the world. Now
Scott Donnell:we help rescue kids from human trafficking with Tebow, and now
Scott Donnell:we coach families on legacy and have just wrote a book on the
Scott Donnell:kingdom of heaven. So it's been a wild journey, unemployed,
Scott Donnell:unemployable, just like you. So yeah, I think here's my view.
Scott Donnell:Like, I think if you're going to succeed in life, you have to
Scott Donnell:have a view of failure that is positive. You have to be able to
Scott Donnell:think of life in terms of win or learn, not win or lose. The
Scott Donnell:greatest breakthroughs I've ever had in my life have come on the
Scott Donnell:back of things that didn't go as planned, and
Loral Langemeier:isn't that true?
Scott Donnell:It's true in relationships. It's true in
Scott Donnell:business. It's true in honestly in health and in home and kids.
Scott Donnell:Like I, you know, we we work with a lot of families now, and
Scott Donnell:whenever I meet families, the first thing they tell me is
Scott Donnell:like, "Where were you 10 years ago? Where were you 20 years
Scott Donnell:ago? We we have all these mess ups. We've had all these screw
Scott Donnell:ups. And so my rule of thumb, Loral, is this: every setback in
Scott Donnell:your life is actually a setup if you let it be.
Loral Langemeier:Yeah.
Scott Donnell:Okay. Things don't just happen, you know, at
Scott Donnell:you. They don't happen to you. They happen for you. And I think
Scott Donnell:God, you know, He doesn't just rescue us from things. He he
Scott Donnell:helps us prepare us for things. So the the struggles in
Scott Donnell:business, you know, you and I have both made and lost a
Scott Donnell:million. We've made and lost 10s of millions. We've had
Scott Donnell:incredible successes and failures along the way, but
Scott Donnell:every single one of those that, if you look at it the right way,
Scott Donnell:I can already tell you that they have been the greatest blessing
Scott Donnell:in my life. They've unlocked more opportunity than I've ever
Scott Donnell:seen. They've turned me into a person of humility, of faith, of
Scott Donnell:love for other people. It's given me wisdom I could never
Scott Donnell:earn otherwise. You can't learn. You know, one of my rules with
Scott Donnell:kids and teens is this: you can't learn without the word
Scott Donnell:"earn. You can't even spell it without "earn. So you've got to
Scott Donnell:earn these lessons in life. You can't just like your mom and dad
Scott Donnell:can't just tell you one time and then all of a sudden you learn
Scott Donnell:it forever. You got to go through these things and earn
Scott Donnell:the lessons. So very grateful to be here.
Loral Langemeier:I love it. So let's talk legacy because that's
Loral Langemeier:our com. That's some of our common language, and then I want
Loral Langemeier:to end with the. I'm gonna actually click a little
Loral Langemeier:stopwatch on because I know you and I could just keep going and
Loral Langemeier:going and going, and
Scott Donnell:yeah, and we're
Loral Langemeier:actually those of you that are listening.
Loral Langemeier:Scott's been on before in a different conversation, which is
Loral Langemeier:a transition, which which caused this transition. So you can go
Loral Langemeier:back and look at my podcast, and we'll do at least one more, if
Loral Langemeier:not more. If we could get Tebo on with you, I'd love to have
Loral Langemeier:one just on human trafficking, and you know where I want to
Loral Langemeier:spin that one, and not spin. I might want the angle and the
Loral Langemeier:direction to why it is so profitable. It it is it makes
Loral Langemeier:any other industry. I mean, it's disgusting the profitability and
Loral Langemeier:the money made on those kids. I think it's it's a 500
Scott Donnell:it's a $530 billion industry of today, as of
Scott Donnell:today, with 50 million children and women caught up in human
Scott Donnell:trafficking. It is the worst scourge on the face of the
Scott Donnell:planet, and that's why we have to we can't just sit back and do
Scott Donnell:nothing. So we're. Tooth and nail, yeah. I love
Loral Langemeier:it, and I'm going to help join in on that.
Loral Langemeier:You know that legacy,
Scott Donnell:by the way.
Loral Langemeier:That is legacy.
Scott Donnell:So if you want my thoughts, real quick, yeah, go
Scott Donnell:ahead. Yep. Okay. Inheritance is what you leave to someone.
Scott Donnell:Legacy is what you leave in them.
Loral Langemeier:Yep.
Scott Donnell:Okay. Heritage. That's why I say heritage over
Scott Donnell:inheritance. Like, what do you care about? What are your
Scott Donnell:beliefs, your worldviews, your values, your relationships
Scott Donnell:inside your family? What are you going to be instilling into your
Scott Donnell:kids and grandkids? That's a million times more important to
Scott Donnell:me than net worth at death. I'm not against it. I'm all for it.
Scott Donnell:Like, let's train up the children in the way they should
Scott Donnell:go. Let's teach them to be qualified to earn and steward
Scott Donnell:money well, and not have money master their life, not be their
Scott Donnell:idol. Have them be able to be generous with it. How how to
Scott Donnell:create value and scale it well, invest it well, have delayed
Scott Donnell:gratification. All that's amazing, but so many families
Scott Donnell:are focused on the number,
Loral Langemeier:yeah,
Scott Donnell:and they're not focusing on the actual legacy of
Scott Donnell:what they're leaving in their kids and grandkids, and that is
Scott Donnell:the game. If you can nail that, then honestly, Lorall, my belief
Scott Donnell:is like, hey, that makes the money in its proper place. Okay,
Scott Donnell:and so my whole thing is like, let's. I want to make
Scott Donnell:inheritance with my kids and grandkids a non-issue.
Unknown:Yeah, because
Scott Donnell:if it's a non-issue, then it's a blessing.
Scott Donnell:If it's if it's everything, like if it's a form of buying back
Scott Donnell:their love, or it's my job to secure their future and protect
Scott Donnell:them and give them the comforts and the things that they can't
Scott Donnell:get on their own. No, now now it's coercion, it's bribery,
Scott Donnell:it's a problem. You know, like you're going to create
Scott Donnell:entitlement with that. You're going to create estrangement
Scott Donnell:with that. You're going to create victimhood with that. So,
Scott Donnell:my whole thing is like, let's make inheritance a non-issue
Scott Donnell:because then it can be a huge blessing for our kids and
Scott Donnell:grandkids because it's not their identity. It's not like going to
Scott Donnell:fix anything. It's just adding on to what's already established
Scott Donnell:as a firm foundation. Does that make sense?
Loral Langemeier:I love it. I love it. Yeah, and Scott's been
Loral Langemeier:doing more and more work just in this conversation. I know when
Loral Langemeier:we first met, Tom Ziegler actually was the first one who
Loral Langemeier:described inheritance and legacy the way you just did, which is
Loral Langemeier:you know what what you get versus what you leave behind the
Loral Langemeier:roots, right, the values into your family, and that is a lot
Loral Langemeier:of the work that I do. And then from you, what I want to do is
Loral Langemeier:you're going to hand those people to us to get the actual
Loral Langemeier:details done-the taxes, the corporate structure, the trust.
Loral Langemeier:So that's what we do. And Scott does an amazing job and comes
Loral Langemeier:from a big family of legacy as well.
Unknown:Yep.
Loral Langemeier:So let's let's let's going to switch gears a
Loral Langemeier:little bit to your book. Yeah. So and how that book? I mean,
Loral Langemeier:we're both Christians. We're both faith-based. It's
Loral Langemeier:interesting that both of us, kind of later in our careers,
Loral Langemeier:are talking louder and prouder about it. Not that we weren't
Loral Langemeier:loud and proud, but it wasn't our messaging. But to combine it
Loral Langemeier:into the messaging, and you got a new book coming out, and I
Loral Langemeier:want everybody to go get it. And I, I want an autographed copy,
Loral Langemeier:of course. All
Scott Donnell:right, deal. Well, I, I'll tell you, it's
Scott Donnell:been a wild ride. The book is called Kingdom Habits. Okay,
Scott Donnell:you're not even gonna believe this is the first year hearing
Scott Donnell:about it. That's a drop of Jesus' blood, by the way. This
Scott Donnell:is wild, Loral. Okay, so last April, I felt the Lord basically
Scott Donnell:tell me go into your prayer closet, and I have a message,
Scott Donnell:and he just downloaded this crazy operating system. This is
Scott Donnell:like the gospel as an operating system. Here's how God set up
Scott Donnell:the game, and our job is to live into these kingdom habits. And
Scott Donnell:you know, if you're a Christian, if I mean, I love Jesus. I love
Scott Donnell:Jesus. I don't pull punches, all right, but the truth of the
Scott Donnell:matter is, you know, God loves us. He set up creation in a
Scott Donnell:certain way that allows us to thrive and flourish, and he and
Scott Donnell:whatever God created, the devil's going to counterfeit it.
Scott Donnell:So, what God set up as like, hey, here's what makes for a
Scott Donnell:beautiful life, the devil's like, hey, I know how to pervert
Scott Donnell:it. I know how to pollute it. I know how to destroy it. I know
Scott Donnell:how to like prostitute it and warp it, right?
Loral Langemeier:It looks the same, but it's totally not in
Loral Langemeier:the basis of the same.
Scott Donnell:That's right. I call it two truths and a lie.
Scott Donnell:Like the devil's really, really good at warping things one
Scott Donnell:degree off, right? Like, and so the book it has 18 habits of
Scott Donnell:living in the kingdom of heaven, advancing the gospel, loving
Scott Donnell:other people, flourishing, and you know, living with God and
Scott Donnell:Jesus and and yielding to the Holy Spirit. Like here's how we
Scott Donnell:do it, and I'll just pick one of the habits. Are you ready for
Scott Donnell:this? I'm
Loral Langemeier:asked for your top three, so go with the top
Loral Langemeier:one and then go. All
Scott Donnell:right, here's the one that's gonna make make your
Scott Donnell:audience go. What? Okay, here we go. This it's the second habit
Scott Donnell:in the book. It's called the habit of dethroning. Okay. In so
Scott Donnell:in the Gospels, Matthew six and Luke 16, Jesus says you can't
Scott Donnell:serve two masters. You'll be loyal to one, you will despise
Scott Donnell:the other. You will love one, you will hate the other. You
Scott Donnell:can't serve both God and Mammon. Now, the word a lot of people
Scott Donnell:use today is the word money, but it actually isn't money. Okay,
Scott Donnell:the word that was in the Bible was an Aramaic word that they
Scott Donnell:never translated to Greek. It was called mamos. Jesus actually
Scott Donnell:used the word mamonas, mammon, and it's not money because
Scott Donnell:everyone. This is what people get wrong about money. Money is
Scott Donnell:not good or bad, Loral. Money is a tool. Okay, if you think money
Scott Donnell:is everything and you love it, that's the root of all kinds of
Scott Donnell:misery and evil in your life. If you think money's bad or like
Scott Donnell:the devil, well, God gave gives money to people as a blessing to
Scott Donnell:steward and give and help people and build businesses that create
Scott Donnell:jobs. Like, what are you talking about? If you think money is
Scott Donnell:evil, you have a poverty mindset, and you're never going
Scott Donnell:to have any. Like, you're just going to waste it, and you're
Scott Donnell:going to say terrible things to your kids about money, and make
Scott Donnell:them feel terrible and create all these money traumas. So,
Scott Donnell:money's not good or bad. It's just it's a tool. It's it's a
Scott Donnell:store of value. It makes you more of who you already are.
Scott Donnell:Okay, but that word was called mammon, and it was a pronoun
Scott Donnell:that Jesus said, and and if you study the word mammon, here's
Scott Donnell:what mammon is. Mammon, he was actually naming like a spiritual
Scott Donnell:force, like the devil. So mammon is is greed and avarice and this
Scott Donnell:insatiable lust for more. I call it the little G God of more. So
Scott Donnell:the whole point of and and this is the rival master of God. So
Scott Donnell:he's naming a spiritual power here. So Mammon is this
Scott Donnell:insatiable lust for more. Got to have more, more stuff, more
Scott Donnell:money, more power, more influence, more cars, more
Scott Donnell:homes, more businesses, more beauty, a better family, a
Scott Donnell:six-pack, a million more dollars. How much is enough,
Scott Donnell:Loral? A little more.
Loral Langemeier:Yeah.
Scott Donnell:And that is the rat wheel that Mammon, that the
Scott Donnell:devil wants to get us on. And if you do that, all it does is
Scott Donnell:create anxiety, and it creates frustration, and it creates this
Scott Donnell:performative living, where you're always toiling, and it's
Scott Donnell:never enough. And so the only way to dethrone it, and by the
Scott Donnell:way, Mammon's an idol factory. It just creates all these idols.
Scott Donnell:All the things I just mentioned are idols that become in our
Scott Donnell:lives, and we worship those things. We we think about those
Scott Donnell:things. We cared so deeply about those things. We have to hold on
Scott Donnell:tightly, instead of surrendering to God. Mammon becomes what we
Scott Donnell:worship, this spiritual force, this insatiable lust for more.
Scott Donnell:And the only thing mammon will never give you is peace. It's
Scott Donnell:because peace is not something that you can buy. You can't earn
Scott Donnell:it. You can't achieve peace. Peace is a person. His name is
Scott Donnell:Jesus, and that's why it says, and many times throughout
Scott Donnell:Scripture, but in Philippians it says He gives you peace beyond
Scott Donnell:understanding. Like contentment and peace come from surrender to
Scott Donnell:God, and the only way to do that is to dethrone these idols from
Scott Donnell:your life, you have to surrender and repent of them and get them
Scott Donnell:out of your heart, so that you can put God back at the center
Scott Donnell:of it and surrender everything to Him. So that's
Loral Langemeier:so I want to reframe just and correct at it
Loral Langemeier:if I'm not hearing that that way. So the folks listening, I
Loral Langemeier:was going to speak to those who wouldn't say they're a Christian
Loral Langemeier:or like I know a lot of people of different religions say they
Loral Langemeier:know God, but they don't know Jesus, right? So just speak to
Loral Langemeier:the people who you don't have an identification of saying that
Loral Langemeier:I'm a Christian, right? And this isn't this is for anybody to
Loral Langemeier:listen to, even if you say I'm an atheist.
Scott Donnell:Yeah. So
Loral Langemeier:when you, because I've been doing this
Loral Langemeier:amazing prayer, is like not my way. It's like your way, your
Loral Langemeier:will, right? That's kind of one of my. That's the
Scott Donnell:surrender prayer. The surrender prayer
Loral Langemeier:always is not my way. But what's interesting
Loral Langemeier:when I just heard you talk about idols, so I'm going to give some
Loral Langemeier:different context or different words for maybe people to get
Loral Langemeier:because I don't know that people would say that I idolize it. But
Loral Langemeier:the more you think about it, which is the anxiety, the time.
Loral Langemeier:If you think about in your day how much you angst think about
Loral Langemeier:the thing. In a lot of way, that energy and that time is a way of
Loral Langemeier:idling. Correct.
Scott Donnell:That's right.
Loral Langemeier:And so the mind. So
Scott Donnell:let me let me bumper it for you. Whatever you
Scott Donnell:cling to most owns you. So an idol is something that over
Scott Donnell:time, the energy, the focus, the thoughts, the emotions around
Scott Donnell:it, explosive emotions. Okay, you can if you want to find your
Scott Donnell:idols, just study what your explosive emotions. Wherever
Scott Donnell:you're comparing a lot and worrying about, and anxiety or
Scott Donnell:frustration over, if you lose it or need for control of it, those
Scott Donnell:are idols. And anything aside from God is an idol of Mammon
Scott Donnell:that just honestly it creates havoc everywhere because the
Scott Donnell:devil's whole goal is to steal, kill, and destroy all the good
Scott Donnell:things that God created for us to enjoy. And so, I'm all for
Scott Donnell:enjoying things in our in this world. Enjoy creation, have
Scott Donnell:these beautiful things, and have abundance. But when you cling to
Scott Donnell:them as your identity, right? Right. Like I gotta have this,
Scott Donnell:or like. My life's going to be over, you know. I've like that's
Loral Langemeier:the and Scott. I want to just take it outside
Loral Langemeier:of the realm of money because I was just thinking of the amount
Loral Langemeier:of people because I'm so, you know, my master's degree was in
Loral Langemeier:exercise physiology, and I'm everything we're doing now at
Loral Langemeier:our big table because we're 26 years in, so 26 year, which I'm
Loral Langemeier:super blessed to have had, you know, the opportunity to train
Loral Langemeier:that many people, but I'm ending my career with our whole room.
Loral Langemeier:Like when you come back in at our table next spring, it's all
Loral Langemeier:health and wealth. Like we have tons of health modalities
Loral Langemeier:because I always say the wealthiest and the healthiest
Loral Langemeier:live in alternatives, not in what's normal in the world. But
Loral Langemeier:the idolization you're talking about also isn't just the
Loral Langemeier:mammoth. Isn't just about money. It's about those who like their
Loral Langemeier:entire obsession is about their body.
Scott Donnell:Yeah,
Loral Langemeier:right. I mean, there's like I want to go. I
Loral Langemeier:just I just wanted to identify or just you know re recognize
Loral Langemeier:this is a reign. This isn't just about money. This is anything
Loral Langemeier:that you're giving obsessive time to.
Scott Donnell:That's exactly right. So money. The reason why
Scott Donnell:money is like has this almost like spiritual powerful status
Scott Donnell:is because money is three things about money. You ready? The
Scott Donnell:reason why I think Mammon uses money as like the main weapon is
Scott Donnell:here. Here's why: because it's storeable. It's storeable power,
Scott Donnell:Loral. You can store it up. Number two, it's measurable
Scott Donnell:power. You can actually see the amount of power that it can get
Scott Donnell:you, or and then so like a CEO, you know, or the president.
Scott Donnell:You're only you don't know the extent of your power. You can't
Scott Donnell:measure it. The a president is only present for four years,
Scott Donnell:right? Like that's not the same as storeable, measurable power.
Scott Donnell:But the biggest thing about money is it's fungible. Money
Scott Donnell:can immediately transform into any idol that I want, because I
Scott Donnell:can just use the money that I've acquired to get the things that
Scott Donnell:I want to build my own kingdom and have my own idol. That's
Scott Donnell:what beauty and security and comfort and one more zero in the
Scott Donnell:bank account, one more deal, and I'll be fine. One more house,
Scott Donnell:one more asset, one more thing, and all this is just striving
Scott Donnell:after the wind. It is. This is what Mammon is trying to get us
Scott Donnell:to focus on, and so surrender is the only way out. Like full
Scott Donnell:surrender to God. Like this is my belief. It's like surrender
Scott Donnell:is what to God, letting Him control your future, letting
Scott Donnell:just saying you're in charge and not me. Like you are what I want
Scott Donnell:to cling to, and nothing else. And then that's where peace and
Scott Donnell:contentment floods you like a tidal wave. Where can people
Loral Langemeier:get your book?
Scott Donnell:Here's the crazy part: when I finished it, the
Scott Donnell:Lord said, "Don't put your name on it. So literally, it's like a
Scott Donnell:tiny Kingdom Habits and a drop of Jesus blood. And so I don't
Scott Donnell:know where you can get it. We'll have it out in a couple weeks.
Scott Donnell:You can probably go to Amazon, just look up Kingdom Habits, or
Scott Donnell:go to our website kingdomhabits.com. So
Loral Langemeier:is it out already?
Scott Donnell:There is some secret links out there, but the
Scott Donnell:Lord said, "Do you want the glory, Scott, or me? Good. And
Scott Donnell:so I said, "You. And so I didn't do any forwards, no
Scott Donnell:testimonials, no endorsements, no name on the front. I'm
Scott Donnell:just-it's all for him. He gets all the glory because he-I feel
Scott Donnell:like he wrote it, not me. I just was the first to read it. You,
Loral Langemeier:yeah, you were-you were the channel. Yeah,
Loral Langemeier:I was.
Scott Donnell:Yeah, I was just. It was an honor to do. Like the
Scott Donnell:book, the book was not the project. I was. Yeah. So
Loral Langemeier:I love it. There you go. Last thing, really
Loral Langemeier:quick. So I'm gonna have you back. We're gonna do a couple
Loral Langemeier:series on this. One on the book, and I want to bring Tebow and
Loral Langemeier:let's have a very serious talk about the monetization of sex
Loral Langemeier:trafficking-it is horrific what goes on and what's gone on
Loral Langemeier:around the world and what's tolerated. So leave us with some
Loral Langemeier:words of wisdom. There's a site people can donate. Give us some
Loral Langemeier:insight there, and then when we have Scott back, we'll drill
Loral Langemeier:down into some of these topics deeper.
Scott Donnell:Yeah, I mean, if people want to know more about
Scott Donnell:it. They, I was anything at the Tebow Foundation's phenomenal.
