Episode Summary:
Key Takeaways
- Podcast Recorded: Dr. Porter was a guest on the "Don't Wait for Your Wake Up Call" podcast, discussing brain fitness, stress, and reprogramming the unconscious mind.
- Podcast Key Message: "You are the one you've been waiting for." Take personal responsibility for your health and happiness, as you have the power to create your reality.
Topics
Podcast Recording: "Don't Wait for Your Wake Up Call"
- Dr. Porter's Background:
- Grew up with his father, a Silva instructor, who used hypnosis to overcome alcoholism.
- Invented the MC Square, the first portable light and sound machine, inspired by how fire's 10 Hz frequency induces relaxation.
- Reverse-engineered the SILS device (Sensory Input Learning System) after its creator passed, leading to BrainTap.
- The Brain's Electrical Nature:
- MIT research confirms the brain is an electrical system; the electron transport chain (thoughts) leads, and chemical reactions follow.
- A 1994 UK study proved the body is a Wi-Fi network, not just a chemical solution.
- The body emits infrared light (photons) that codes cellular instructions. A COVID study found those viewing it as a threat emitted 200x less light than those viewing it as a challenge.
- Stress & Recovery:
- Stress is growth, but chronic stress without recovery prevents neuroplasticity.
- A newborn's brain operates at 18.1 volts; this drops to ~10.1 volts by age 21 due to neural pruning.
- Dementia Study: BrainTap increased brain voltage, removing all participants from the dementia scale in six weeks.
- Sleep as a Sport: Quality sleep is non-negotiable for brain health.
- Requirement: 1 hour deep sleep (for glial lymphatic detox) + 2 hours REM (for organizing/prioritizing).
- Finding: A study of Australian coal miners showed they slept 10 hours but got only 1 minute deep sleep and 2 minutes REM.
- Reprogramming the Unconscious Mind:
- The unconscious mind, like a fourth-grader, never loses an argument; it must be given a better task.
- Change Personal History Technique (NLP): Re-experience a memory with new wisdom. The brain cannot distinguish real from imagined, neutralizing the past's negative impact.
- Analogy: Forgive the person, forget the experience, but retain the learning. Discard the "green and fuzzy" leftovers of the past.
- "Don't Wait for Your Wake Up Call" Meaning:
- "You don't need a breakdown to have a breakthrough."
- Every morning is your wake-up call to activate your infinite potential.
- The greatest limit is your belief system, not your consciousness.

These courses teach life skills and anyone can take them, if you want to be a better leader, parent, partner, be empowered in your own life, these courses are for you!
Melissa’s passion project is her non-profit, Girls Matter (www.girlsmatter.ca), breaking the poverty cycle 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time. The mission is to keep girls in school and stop teenage marriages, because school isn’t free in over 50 countries around the world and when parents have to make the difficult choices of feeding their kids or paying for school, food wins. And when the girls hit their teen years, they will often be married off so that someone else becomes responsible to feed them. Keeping girls in school instead creates a generational ripple effect, because an educated girl is more than twice as likely to ensure her own children are educated. Educating girls also grows the GDP of countries, when they get into the workforce. This is how together, we can change the world.Guests on this podcast are invited to donate to this important cause. [00:00:04] I am pleased to share with you a new training called Karma Code Timeline Therapy Practitioner Certification. This training is a powerful 3-day live on Zoom session teaching you how to help others in clearing all of their stuffed down emotion of anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt,
[00:00:31] rage and shame, without them having to talk about any of the situations that ever caused the root of that anger and release it from the cells in their body and have them feeling light and also to release all of the BS stories running around in our head of being unlovable, unworthy, not good enough, powerless, etc, etc. and get rid of all of that chatter and allow
[00:00:55] them to have peace and quiet in their head. This training is transformational for your clients and for you because during the training you get to experience it both as a practitioner and a client and release all of that garbage for yourself and clear out your emotional body, your mental body and keep them clear so that all of that stuffed down emotion isn't causing
[00:01:21] dis-ease later in your life. Check out the show notes for the link. Our first training is happening in 2026. Imagine getting up every day full of energy as if you were in your 20s again. What would that be like? What would that be worth to you? What is your health worth to you?
[00:01:51] Think about it. Your health isn't everything but without it everything else is nothing and yet too many of us are taking it for granted until something goes wrong. No one wakes up hoping to be diagnosed with a disease or chronic illness and yet we've never been taught how to be proactive in our health through our school system or public health. As a registered health coach and integrative health
[00:02:16] practitioner, I believe it is time this information is made available to everyone. Combining new knowledge around your health and the ability to do my functional medicine lab tests in the comfort of your own home will allow you to optimize your health for today and all your tomorrows. Don't wait for your wake-up call. Welcome back to another episode of the Don't Wait for Your Wake
[00:02:44] Up Call podcast. I am here with Dr. Patrick Porter. Welcome to the show. Hey, thanks for having me. It's great to be here. I'm very excited to have you here on the show today because your work aligns with so much of the work that I do and what my listeners are learning about. And just to introduce you to the audience, Dr. Porter is an award-winning author, speaker, and founder of BrainTap, a leading neuroscience-based platform designed to help people achieve optimal brain health and performance. For over three decades,
[00:03:14] he has been at the forefront of brainwave entrainment technology, championing non-invasive natural approaches to enhance mental clarity, emotional resilience, and cognitive longevity. He also has his latest book that came out on October 21st of 2025 called Brain Fitness Blueprint, which synthesizes cutting-edge neuroscience, ancient wisdom, and practical lifestyle tools
[00:03:39] to redefine what it means to be brain fit in the modern world. And I absolutely love this work, Dr. Porter, because let's face it, in our modern world, we have more and more people struggling with neurodegenerative diseases at younger and younger ages. And so I would love for you just to give the backstory of how you got into this line of work, and then we will dive into where it is taking
[00:04:07] us at this cutting edge right now today. Okay. I'll make the long story short here because I've been doing this actually since I was 12 years old. My dad was a Silva instructor. He got help. He went, the Catholic Church came over and said, Hey, Michael, we think we can help you stop drinking. You need to come to this meeting. He learned how to relax during the Silva method, which we later learned was a form of hypnosis, but he didn't call it that. But my dad stopped drinking that night. And he said, Hey, if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for my whole family. And I was a troubled
[00:04:37] teen. I got help back in second grade. And, you know, I was struggling in school. And my dad taught me how to go to level as they call it in Silva. And so I started doing things. My favorite book was As a Man Thinketh, you know, growing up. And I made my first recording when cassettes came out. So people that don't know what those are, they were actually ways we recorded things. And it was an alarm clock that would wake me up with my affirmations in the morning. So I've been doing this a long time
[00:05:03] and just happened that my I'm a kind of a geek at heart. So I was into electronics before it was popular. There was no people can imagine there was no computer screens when I learned how to work on a computer, you know, you just so you know, that's where we're at. But we invented a piece of technology called the MC square, which was the first portable light and sound machine. And we did that because we were looking at the body of a person because your physiology affects your psychology. And what we
[00:05:30] were looking at was when somebody is in pain, they're in a high sympathetic state, this is fight or flight. And healing doesn't happen there. So we have to relax them. And what we noticed was, when people look at a fire, their brain chemistry changes, their physiology changes, and their brain literally sinks to 10 hertz frequency. And we now know that it's because all fires burn at 10 hertz frequency. So we have these mirror neurons in our body that actually are going out to our environment
[00:05:56] saying, hey, what's going on out here? And we always are trying to create homeostasis or balance with our environment. So going to school for electronics, I found out that along the way that maybe I didn't want to work with electronics, this was fixing radios and TVs. We don't do that anymore. We just throw them out. My new one. Yeah, yeah. And then I went to school for robotics, but it was not like robotics today. It was solenoids
[00:06:20] and things. And then, but I chance encounter in Vegas, where I was working at a church, I was a psychologist at the church. And you don't make any money doing that. I don't recommend that as a career choice, unless you just have a lot of money and you want to do things. You might get $5 for a visit or something. And it was, it was good work. But I told Gilly, Gil, I said, hey, I can't, I can't do this anymore. I got to go get a real job because I can't even afford my car payment or my rent.
[00:06:48] And he said, I need you to go to Vegas. You're going to meet somebody there. Her name is Linnea. And I said, what? He said, you're going to meet her there. She's going to teach you about a technology. You're going to reinvent it. And it's going to go across the world. That happened. I still have the cassette tape of it. Now it's a digital tape. I let my wife listen to it. We got married 37 years ago. And I said, look, he told me this was all going to happen way before it did. And when
[00:07:14] I went to the event, it was so funny because it was a, it was a NLP event in, in Las Vegas. And they had a booth area. And when I was walking by, a woman came out to me and she said, yeah, I want to show you something. I said, okay, I'll come back at the break. She said, okay, remember my name's Linnea. And I went, wow, you're the reason I'm here. And she goes, what do you mean? I said, yeah. And when I got on the equipment, it was, it was called the SILS, the sensory input learning
[00:07:41] system. And you would watch skin temperature, respiration. There was no HRV and things like that. We would, but we know when your hands are warm, you don't have headaches, you know, these, these kinds of things. So they, so they hooked me up and I'm doing the session. I had a trip like nobody would believe. I mean, I was, I was flying through space. It was, it was incredible journey. And I have a pretty good imagination because I had a degree. I actually got a scholarship for art in the, so I'm pretty creative up there. And I got done. I said, I
[00:08:10] really want one of those. And they said, well, you're lucky we have two of them. They're only $10,000 in 1986. So I'm going, well, $10,000, that'd be like $40,000 today. And you were making $5 on your sessions at the church. So I kept going back. I became friends with them. Like I know people do it with our booths when we go to shows and things. But at the end of the show, these two, Larry and Linnea were all upset. Linnea was crying. And I said, what's going on? Didn't have a good show. And they said,
[00:08:37] no, Dr. Robinson, the one who made this device has passed away. And he didn't teach anybody how it was made. And I said, you know what? I have a degree in electronics. I said, maybe I can help you reverse engineer. Where are you going next? And they said, well, we only have two machines left. And the wife said we could have those make whatever money, but then we got to find out what to do. She said, we have family in Scottsdale, Arizona. And I said, I have an office in Scottsdale, Arizona. I said, so we exchanged numbers. There's no cell phones back then.
[00:09:04] Right. I lose their number. They lose my number. Two weeks later, a friend of mine, Jerry DeShazo calls me up and he says, I met these people at this event. I really think you need to meet them. Can I bring them by? I'm not putting the two together. They pull into my parking lot of my clinic and Larry and Linnea come out with the cells. The universe really wanted you to partner with these people. So I do believe everything is by divine appointment. There's no accidents.
[00:09:33] There's no coincidences. There's no happenstance. 100%. And just so the listeners understand, if you're going through something right now, I want you to think about it. Life keeps score and you're going through the dark night of the soul. That's fine. But imagine once there's never been a superhero ever written about, learned about that has not went through the dark night of the soul and emerged with a superpower. Yes. So you have a superpower. And at the time,
[00:10:00] life will get you there. Sometimes it has to knock you over the head with a hammer, but sometimes it just gently nudges you. So, you know, you, this is your wake up call actually, because in order to fix the brain, it all starts with something called the electron transport chain. That's your thoughts. Yes. So what excites me is everything we were doing in the eighties and the nineties and the 2000, 2010, now 2020. Now we can measure it. We can actually record what's going
[00:10:28] on. It's not mystical anymore. It's, it's actually neuroscience is becoming more like the Vedas than it is, you know, neuroscience, because they talked about these things 10,000 years ago. Right. And sometimes it blows my mind that how did they know that 10 years ago when we are only just getting around with the science that we have today to actually prove it. And yet the power that we've
[00:10:54] carried within, within our own mind, and the fact that our thoughts really are creating our reality, all of that has been known and understood for all of this time. And now the work that you're doing is so powerful because the stress that we live in, in our world today is damaging our mental body,
[00:11:17] our physical body, and people don't realize that. And so I love that you're out there sharing this with people and giving them tools in order to undo the damage that later shows up as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and all the other neurodegenerative diseases. So let's talk about rewiring that stress response before people get to the wake up call. Right. When you think about stress, stress isn't
[00:11:45] the problem. Stress is growth, but we don't have periods of recovery. Right. If you don't have those periods of recovery and you don't intentionally have these periods of recovery, your brain never gets a chance to do something called neuroplasticity. So when you were born, Melissa, you were the smartest you're ever going to be. Your brain was operating at 18.1 volts. You have a 100 billion neurobit processor. And think every one of those neurons is more powerful than a Cray computer, the most powerful
[00:12:13] computer on earth. So you have a hundred billion of them all working together. You took in a reality, you interpreted it, you related to it, you learned a language, maybe two. And this became real for you from the inside out, not from the outside in. And I like to tell people the life happens through you, not to you. Yes. It's very important. We'll get to that in a minute. But as you think about it, when you're thinking about how all this happens, and as we learn and grow in our life,
[00:12:41] our brain does something that is good and bad. It does something called neuropruning. Yes. The more we know, the less we really know. So when Socrates said that, it was very true, because when we shut down those neural pathways of possibility, they no longer become a choice or an option. And we all know that choices are better than no choice. Yes. So in the brain collapses upon itself. Now, the good news is, until the moment you die,
[00:13:08] you are making new neurons. We can't get those ones back from college. But they are still you're making new ones today. And you can make you can create a new brain today, too, because we've done studies with 90 year olds. And they've improved brain function by 19%. So the brain is kind of like the liver, it will regrow if there's a hematoma in it because of a trauma. If you can get the glial lymphatic system operating and get the toxins out, then the brain will fill that in with gray matter
[00:13:35] and whatever it needs, and it will start operating again. So it's a use it or lose it kind of scenario that we have with our brain. Well, I love that. And this audience loves hearing that, too, because I am a big promoter of detoxing. And again, not just the physical body, detoxing the mental body as well. And it's all part of that process of allowing our body to do what it can do, which is heal when we create the environment for
[00:14:00] it to do so. And that's exactly what you're creating with your brain tap tool and having people have a tool that they can use each and every day, sometimes multiple times a day to bring them to that place of rest. Yeah. And it's important to understand for the listeners that when we say brain fitness, like the brain fitness blueprint, meditation is good. I do my own meditations every day. But the reality is that in the morning, we need a brainwave called SMR, sensory motor rhythm.
[00:14:28] This is between your audience might know the brainwaves, but there's beta, which is wide awake. We call it the reactionary mind. Then there's alpha, which is your intuitive mind. But between there, there's a band of brainwaves called SMR, sensory motor rhythm. This is the one that atrophies as we get better looking and more intelligent with age. So as you're, as you're, as you, and also stress collapses this waveform. Because if you go online and type in Bill Gates introducing USB, now how many times did he plug in that USB with no problem,
[00:14:58] but he gets on stage in front of everybody, he can't plug it in because he's stressed out. Because the stress causes our body, our nervous system not to operate, even though our brain knows what to do, our body isn't communicating. So like to tell people is your brain doesn't just occupy that space between your ears. Your brain is in every cell of your body. You are an intelligent, infinite creature that animates this form, but isn't this form. So it's hard for people to understand that. But MIT, by the way, just proved it.
[00:15:27] MIT said that everything starts with the electron transport chain. The energy of a thought starts all the action and processes of the body. And they even went so far as to say that we are light beings. And they referred back to a study done in 1994, where a group of doctors got together in UK, and they studied the human body as a Wi Fi network, not as a chemical solution. And they
[00:15:54] proved out that the chemical process follows the electrical process. So the electron transport chain is the leader. Chemical reaction is the follower. So we do believe you need to eat right, you know, but the thinking right has to be in line first. And if you're spending all your time on your past, you don't have the energy for the present. And you can't produce that beautiful future that's waiting for you, just for you to awaken to its experience, because you're closing, those neurons
[00:16:24] have closed down, that possibility is not there. Or the flip side of that, if you're spending all your time worrying about something in the future and getting anxious about it, and it hasn't happened yet, same thing, you don't have any time for the present, and you're collapsing neuron pathways. And my audience has heard me talk about this before, in terms of our thoughts, we have that thought. And then that triggers whether we're getting cortisol produced in the body, or whether we're getting serotonin and dopamine being produced
[00:16:50] in the body. So that thought is triggering that chemical reaction first, as you're saying MIT has proven. And our bodies are- There's a cool study I'll share with them too, about that. They did a study during COVID, because not only are we light beings, we can measure the light emitting from a person. I'm not talking about curling and photography, I'm talking about photons that emit from the human body, their infrared light. And MIT has proved that it's codes telling our body what to do,
[00:17:18] this light. So when you're around another person, you're actually sharing this light energy. Right. But in the process of doing it, what they said was, during COVID, they wanted to know, does somebody look at COVID as a threat or a challenge? And when they measured the light emitted, because you can measure this light emitted from the body, the person that looked at it as a threat emitted 200 times less light than the people that looked at it as a challenge. So if you look at your, like I said, you're a superhero in training. You know, you've got to
[00:17:47] get through this, whatever it is, whatever books you need to read, whatever training you need to attend, whatever people you need to be around. And it's, you can't do this alone. Right. I mean, sure, we have these gurus that go off into the mountains and do it. And, and I like to say, they're the ones escaping reality. It's harder to do it when you're in your world, in your life doing it, because you get triggered. And figure out those triggers, they can become your action points or your, your jumping points to a greater reality.
[00:18:15] And, you know, if we've learned anything about NLP, you know, the, the neuron, the nervous system is hardwired to produce that physiological effect, but it's what we say it is. It's not what it is. It's what we say it is. Because one thing could be very stressful for one individual and another person says, boy, I'm so excited about jumping out of airplanes. And I go, I don't want to jump out of an airplane unless it's going down. You know, so, you know, people have different thoughts about it. And neither, neither understands the other because you're a universe of one,
[00:18:44] but we get to, we get to learn from everybody around us and keep what's good and get rid of what's bad. But the problem is we hold on to, uh, or we fret about the future and the powers right here. What's happening right now. We, people forget about it. I love it when I go into a restaurant and six people at a table are all texting each other across the table on their phones. I'm going, why don't you just put that down and talk? I mean, we used to do that. You know, there was, you could do those things because there's something about connection and community,
[00:19:12] things like that, that, that needs to be made for us as humans. We need to be a part of a community. Absolutely. And it's funny you say that. Cause I was just in Europe with my girl guides. I had 11 girls. We traveled for three weeks. And in one of the hostels, I came out of our girls room to see girls from another group, all sitting in the hallway, lined up six of them in a row. And I went, are you texting her and you're texting her and they all laughed at me and they said, well,
[00:19:37] we're texting our families and the wifi is better in the hallway. However, yeah, that's what it looks like these days. And it is a different world compared to what it was. And we have lost some of that human connection of just talking, et cetera. Now, speaking of connection, there's also the connection between our brain and our gut. Yes. And I'd love for you to talk about that. And it's a big piece
[00:20:04] of our health in today's world. When I'm speaking in front of doctors groups, which I do quite often, about 60 times a year. And I tell them the first brain is the gut brain. They all look at me like I'm crazy. Yeah. But imagine you were on a horseback ride, like, like Reeves, who, you know, he couldn't walk anymore, right? But his body still worked. Yes. Bruce Lipton says 95% of what
[00:20:28] controls our biology is subconscious. We don't control our heartbeat 86,000 times a day. We don't control our breathing. We now they even know we re-breed our DNA every 40 seconds, which means we re, we either up, up level our DNA because we look at life as a challenge or we down regulate it because we think it's a threat. All that's happening in the gut is doing all of that. Our conscious mind is too busy worrying about our checkbook, our friends, our family, our social posts, everything that's going
[00:20:57] up. Our conscious, I told Bruce, because we would bring him out to quantum university all the time. I said, I think it's 1% we control 99% the subconscious does. That's why you can't really make a change. When Einstein said, you can't solve a problem in the same level it was created. You have to go to the solution state and then return to the problem with the solution in mind. What he's really talking about is altering your brainwave state from a beta brainwave, which is reactionary. And then now they've proven this in sleep science. We do more neurological work while we're sleeping
[00:21:27] than when we're awake. We're actually dumber when we're awake than we are when we're asleep. So the brain is doing all this processing while we're sleeping, preparing us for the next day of our life, categorizing, organizing, doing all these things. And most people think that they don't need to sleep. But like we just did a partnership with Dr. Amen, with a sleep doctor, Dr. Credo calls like a champion, because you need to think of sleep now as a sport. Are you getting one hour
[00:21:54] of deep sleep? That means your glial lymphatic system is opening up, you're cleansing your brain. If you have two hours of REM, that means you're categorizing, organizing, prioritizing. Now in your everyday life, you can be doing the work, reading the right books, being around the right people, taking the right courses, doing those kinds of things, because you want to be in growth mode. You know, my dad was really big on you're either growing in green or you're ripe and rotting. You know, so like I said earlier, you're the smartest when you were born and that
[00:22:22] neural pruning happens. By the time you're 21, that brain is probably modulating around 10.1 volts. You've lost half the voltage of your brain. If that brain voltage drops below seven, you have dementia. In our dementia study where we took everybody off the dementia scale in six weeks, as soon as we got their brain voltage up, that's why we use light stimulus. It increased the brain voltage because our mitochondria needs energy. You've probably heard the expression, my kids are
[00:22:50] too tired to sleep. Well, most adults are too tired to meditate, too tired to sleep, too tired to think because the brain needs energy, but it needs ATP. Yes. It doesn't get it from a candy bar. It gets it from light, sound and vibration. And we get that all day long. So when we do this, we get the brain working back the way it's supposed to. Your brain is designed to heal. Your body is designed to heal. But the interference, number one, comes from your thoughts,
[00:23:18] because that dictates how all the energy flows through the body. Number two, it has to do with your nutrition. You can't outthink a bad diet unless you're St. Germain and you can take a candy bar and make it a salary stock or something, you know, but you got to put the good stuff in so your subconscious can do the work. I always tell people, you want God to build the house, but he wants you to deliver the materials, you know, bring the right materials in and the house will be built. And then the third thing is you have to deal with any traumas. We've all have traumas. Nobody escapes
[00:23:46] trauma in this world. Unfortunately, there's no Shangri-La where everything, and I was in, when I was younger, there was a show called Gilligan's Island. I said, there's no Gilligan's Island, my only choice is Ginger or Marianne. You know, I mean, those are two good choices, right? So, it's usually a really bad choice or a really good choice. And most people are making the decisions based on immediate gratification instead of long-term benefits. And then now we have a fourth
[00:24:14] that's introduced into our world because nobody in history has the technology been so vast and so pervasive in our world. So, technology can either be a hindrance or a help. Yes. Because these screens, not just blue light, I really, it's not about blue light. It's about energy. This is dirty energy. So, like I'm standing on a grounding mat right now. So, I'm grounded. I'm like, I'm outside. But most people don't realize they're running around with three volts of energy coursing
[00:24:42] through their veins. And I'd say, just go to your hardware store, ask them for a volt-ohm meter, measure yourself. Most people have three volts running through their body. This shows up as inflammation. But you're an information system. I sleep on a grounding mat every night for the same reason. Because, you know, I had learned that for every hour you're on your screen getting all of that dirty energy, you need to overcome that by grounding, right? And so, I was like, well, if I'm
[00:25:09] eight hours on my screen and I want to sleep eight hours because I do honor my sleep, I love it, and I know the value of it for my health, I sleep on a grounding mat. So... That's great. Yeah. Even Tom Brady, who's one of our biggest users, he says, for every one minute of exertion, you need two minutes of recovery. Right. So, like, and I tell people, you can count sleep as that as long as you're measuring your sleep. We did a study in your home country of Australia, actually with coal miners in West Australia.
[00:25:37] And one of our students at Quantum University ran the study. And we measured the sleep, these coal miners for 10 days or two weeks before the study. And the average coal miner was sleeping 10 hours a day. You think, wow, that's great. They're sleeping 10 hours a day. They only got one minute of deep sleep, two minutes of REM. They weren't sleeping. They were just in bed. So, a lot of people mistake being in bed for sleep. Your requirement for sleep is one hour of deep sleep, two hours of REM. If it takes you eight hours to do that, you need eight hours. If you take...
[00:26:06] But the studies show, the evidence out there in research shows six and a half hours if sleeping appropriately. Now, if you're not sleeping well, I mean, I know in college, I went by some days without any sleep and I was fine. But that's because your brain is all that energy. But as we, just the metabolism of our brain and the toxins that build up, if we're not detoxing, eventually that will, we'll have to pay Peter, you know. Exactly. I mean, keep robbing Paul to do that. So...
[00:26:34] Yeah. And that's why I also have an aura ring because I love it. It's such an easy tracker for measuring my sleep and understanding where I'm at. And sometimes it picks up when I, you know, my energy levels are lower and I didn't realize it yet. And it's like, okay, I'm just going to take it easier today. And then... I love the aura ring actually will add in if you do a meditation or hypnosis session or something like that. Activity. A little nap. It will add it to you because it knows this is a value to you. And when I was saying
[00:27:00] earlier is what we do is really meditation because in the morning you got that SMR training. In the afternoon, you've got the reboot, the theta, the gamma sessions. The reboot system, it's equivalent to four hours of sleep, but we can now do it with technology. And then at night, we can press a button and go into Delta because two thirds of the world isn't sleeping. That's amazing. You know, sleep is natural. I mean, when somebody says sleep like a baby, they don't mean, you know, they're up all night crying. They mean, they mean sleep like a baby. Fall asleep easily.
[00:27:30] Yes. And you know, so people, that's one of the first things they ask me when they say, what's the first thing I can do to improve my health? I said, get a sleep tracker, start working on your sleep, do some kind of sleep hygiene, start thinking about what are you thinking about before you go to sleep? And I teach them a little technique, the four, eight breath before they go to sleep. And then I tell them once you learn that, and that becomes kind of subconscious for you now on the exhale, just think about all the things you're grateful for. If you can't think of anything,
[00:27:57] just, just thank God that you have a heart, you have a lungs, you have, you know, a warm house and a warm bed to go to sleep in. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Because your body, your brain will literally make the chemical corresponding relationship to that word that you're doing. When Buddha said 10,000, about 5,000 years ago, I guess he said, he who angers you, who conquers you. Medical science actually proved that correct. Because when you think an angry thought or an upset thought, that person doesn't get the experience you do. Yeah, exactly.
[00:28:26] That's you. So I always tell people, why are you letting them win? You know, who cares? You know, so many people, especially when they, as they age, they start to worry about the politicians. You're not going to change those crazy people. They're going to do what they do. You're going to do what you can do in your community. Cause if we, the world isn't going to change because a mass group of people are going to get together and say, we're going to change the world. It's going to change because individuals collectively change, but it happens all at the same time. You know?
[00:28:54] And so it's happening. I know it's happening because when my dad first started doing Silva, I mean, we were like the crazy people, you know, your dad does what? Yeah. And it's all woo woo. Your dad does NLP. Yeah. You know, but I was really good at sports. So they, they would listen to me because, you know, because I was doing something they could see was, was valuable. And I said, yeah. And then people would ask me, cause I'd be meditating in the middle of the infield doing myself hypnosis or whatever in the middle, visualizing.
[00:29:22] Visualizing. Exactly. I did that too. I was a swimmer and my coach taught me this back in the late seventies, early eighties. Yep. Yep. Yep. That's, that's about when I learned it in my dad, uh, you know, he said, if you do that and I just started winning, I don't know how, you know, it wasn't like I, I was training, of course I was doing the work, but I, something happened for me being this uncoordinated guy that couldn't do hardly anything to being this fit person who was really good at whatever they visualized. Right.
[00:29:51] But before I wasn't, I wasn't concerned about that. I didn't put my energy in there. So it's, that's one of the things they say about the brain and the mind or how we want to think about it is what you put your intention on will grow. So if you're, if you're putting your intention on all the things you don't want, then you, you get more of those things because your brain doesn't discern. It just says, okay, you're focused on that. You must want, you must like it. You must want more. Exactly. And then people wonder why it's happening. And then how many people do you ask? Okay. So what do you want when they're complaining about everything that's going wrong? And then they can't
[00:30:21] even answer it because they've been so focused on what they don't want. And that's all they think of. And then, yeah, the brain gives what you, you know, you get what you focus on. So. In our clinic, one of the key questions we asked in the very first introduction was, tell me about one of your best memories. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Because we were trying to get the submodalities of those memories, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And if they couldn't find one. Yep. So we got a lot of work to do here. Exactly.
[00:30:48] Because you've had a lot of good memories. You probably had one this morning that you missed. Right. And I've been accused of being too positive because my moniker is Dr. Positive, right? And a business partner of mine said once, he said, Porter, you're too damn positive. And I said, I'd rather be positive and disappointed every once in a while than be disappointed all the time and miss out on the time to be, to have a good time. Exactly. Exactly. So many people are, you know, that's what I'm saying about the gainers and drainers. You want to be around the gainers. Yes.
[00:31:14] People that are positive, that are supportive, that see your dream as achievable. Because we don't know the limitations of our human consciousness. We don't know how good it could be. But if people let the governments dictate it or their religions dictate it, and I'm not saying anything bad about governments or religions. Some are good. But the thing is that you've got to figure out within your own mind what's going to make you happy. Yes. And if you don't know that, if you don't have that equation dialed in, you're like a boat
[00:31:44] without a rudder. You're going to need to get that in place first. And then you can start going to the other shore. If not, you could be five degrees off in the morning. You're 30 degrees off when you get to the other side and say, God dang it. This is the way I explain it. And maybe it'll help the listeners. I say, imagine, Melissa, you and I, we get up in the morning. We realize we're at the 100-yard dash. We look down the track and we look at the start and go, hey, I didn't train for this. What am I doing here? And they say, well, you're going to do it again tomorrow. Bang. The race starts. The next morning you wake up and you look at the guy again. You go, hey, what am I doing?
[00:32:13] You asked me the same question yesterday. Deepak Chopra says 97% of what's going to happen to us tomorrow we know about today. So what are you pretending not to know? Yeah. So let's activate the brain to start predicting the future by creating the future. Instead of letting the future come at you, let it come through you. Because you visualized it and you planned it like a great athlete. What's going to happen to you today? Who am I going to talk to? How am I going to do it?
[00:32:38] Like before I got on this call, I listened to one of your podcasts just so I could get a little feel for your energy and be part of how you do your flow. Because it really is. If we don't do any brain priming and we leave it up to the past, we might not have done it. In the past, we did the best we could. But in the present, we should do better because we have all the past to weigh on. But if we don't ever evaluate it, and I love the thing, sometimes you do get some good things from social media. A friend sent it to me.
[00:33:07] His little kid, he says, they took sixth place at a tournament. And he was all excited. They took sixth place. You know, most people would be down and down. He goes, we don't lose. We learn. There were only six teams. He says, we learn. That's awesome. Yeah. So, you know, if you can take that as part of your life, we don't lose. We learn. Yes. You're not losing. You're learning. And you keep learning until you learn that lesson. And then it's almost like a computer game. You don't get to the next level. Right. To your best level.
[00:33:35] So if you're wondering why you're in the same relationships, you're getting the same jobs, you're getting the same, that's because you're the same. Right. You haven't learned. You haven't grown. Yeah. And my dad told me that. And my, one thing my dad did as a parent, once he got help with his alcoholism, there were nine of us. So we were pretty spastic. And he would say, if we got in trouble, he'd say, go over to my bookshelf, grab a book, read a chapter and come and tell me how you're going to apply it in your life today. And then I'll let you play. So we got really good at faking it.
[00:34:05] But, you know, but pretty soon we had to read it. We got in trouble so much. Pretty soon we're reading all these books and like a, like a positive virus. It changed the way we were thinking. And then I still remember to this day, because we used to go to church and people say, put the porters in the cry room. And these, these guys are spazes or whatever. And I remember the gentleman come over to my dad and goes, what do you do to your kids? They're so well behaved. They're all honor roll students. They're all great athletes.
[00:34:33] And he says, every day we meditate together. Yeah. You know, just like having meals together. They know that that makes a better community for your family. So I'm a big believer in change yourself, change your family, change your community. And then the world will change. It won't happen the other way around. So many people are waiting for the government to get my hand out. You know, we just need a hand up. We don't need a hand out. Exactly. And it does. It all starts with self.
[00:34:59] And as we heal ourselves, just healing ourself can create profound change on other people in our lives. Again, because of the energy field, the light field. And we just had a student come through one of our trainings that has, you know, dealt with a life, lifelong trauma and poor relationship with her mother. And just coming through the training and starting to change herself out of the blue, her mother reached out, had purchased a self-help book for each of them and said, let's do this together.
[00:35:29] And she was just stunned that her mother had even, you know, made that effort. And the quantum physicist Max Planck said, when you change the way you look at a thing, the thing you're looking at changes. Exactly. Yeah. So it's actually a law of quantum physics. Yes. So when you think about it, but I want to share with the audience, MIT actually not even 20 weeks ago came out with a study that shows 54 generations are affecting you and you are affecting them
[00:35:58] backwards and forwards in time. Now, the Hopi Indians said this over 200 years ago when the chief said, seven generations are guiding us. Right. So we are being guided. We do. And so when you change, you're changing the world. Yeah. It's not just you, but you're doing it for yourself. But because you've changed who you are, you've changed that expression. How many people, you know, the seven generations of Brad Pitt or whatever it is, you know, you know, you have every, everybody knows somebody who knows somebody.
[00:36:27] So your energy is changing the world as a ripple effect when you, when you take care of yourself. And it all comes down to what I like to tell people is personal responsibility. If you have the ability, you personally have to use that ability. That's personal responsibility. So if you, if you deny yourself that ability, you're thinking less of yourself. The reality is that we're far greater than we've been led to believe. We don't even know the limitations. One of my, one of my friends, uh, you wrote the chicken soup for those soul books, Jack Canfield.
[00:36:57] He has a story where he tells where he and Bob Harris, who worked for me, they went down to Florida to talk to this woman and the, a car fell on her, his, her grandson. She picked the car up. She was 86 years old. The son was saved. She became a recluse. So they went down to see what happened. You, this miracle happened. Wow. And she said, I'm 86 years old. I picked up a car. I wasted my life. What could I have done with my life?
[00:37:26] I don't want people to, you have the chance right now. You don't need a breakdown to have a breakthrough. You know, you, you get a breakthrough because you're looking for a breakthrough. Whatever's going on with you. If you're open to the breakthrough, your brain, body, mind, all the systems of your body, your neurology, you are designed to heal. Not only your physical body, your spiritual body, your emotional body, your relationship body, all these things that are part of who you are.
[00:37:52] They're designed to be in coherence, but you're the one that controls it all. You're the one that gets to make the rules. Everybody thinks they're playing Parcheesi when they're playing Monopoly. You know, everybody has, we all have our own game board. So figure out the games you're playing and then figure out how does that game fit into the people you want to be with? Because some people you don't want to be with. There are some people that you might have to weed out, especially as you become more aware in the highest frequency that a person can have is authenticity.
[00:38:22] So when you think you just want to be yourself, you know, don't try to be somebody else. That's what gets people in trouble. Be yourself and don't leave that little self behind or don't leave that future self out there hanging, but bring them all into this moment. Have a powwow every night. That's what you, you know, when you're sleeping and then, then wake up full of energy and a little nervous. You know, I always tell people you should wake up a little nervous in the morning because this is a new day. You've been traveling at a million, millions of miles an hour.
[00:38:50] In fact, while we've been doing this podcast, we've moved 144,000 miles an hour. Just our earth spinning. Our solar system is moving at over 3 million miles an hour. Our galaxy is moving at another 7 million miles. We are so far from where we started. You can't help but change, but people still want to root down in what I call it in my first book, Brain Tap. I call it the dragons of the past is a metaphor because people want to drag on and drag them on and drag them on.
[00:39:17] And as long as you revivicate them, like I don't do any of the things I was taught in school in psychology that it's never worked. I'm sorry if you're a psychologist out there, but if I have to see a client for the rest of their life, that's not working. No. You know, I know people that say, I only take a client if I get to see them for two years. I go, two years? They're 98% different by that time. Their physical body, 98% of their body has been changed. Who are they? You're working with a whole other person.
[00:39:46] You know, why don't you give them some work, put them out on the road? And we always said that, like at Brain Tap now, but at the time it was called Positive Changes. I said, we're a gateway drug for the self-help industry. People come to us with problems. So that problem you're having, that pain you're having, that discomfort you're having, that's a call from your consciousness saying, hey, go get some help because this isn't your actual state. Yeah. Yeah. And unfortunately, society's programmed us to push through and be tough and be strong
[00:40:15] or accept that aches and pains are part of aging or that, you know, whatever the genes are of our parents means we're going to get that disease too. All of that programming, we know we can throw out the window and yet it's still so tight within society and we're attempting as we do our work to have people unlearn that. Yeah. And that leads me into, you know, the programming that happens in our unconscious mind, particularly between those ages of zero to seven.
[00:40:45] And then have you talk about how you can reprogram the unconscious mind for sustainable habits that work for us now versus what's no longer serving us. Well, actually, I just wrote a paper about that because MIT also proved that we actually change the experience every time that we bring it up. Now we knew this in NLP, but now we have science that backs it up. So when you bring that memory up, if I asked you, Melissa, tell me about your favorite vacation, you would easily be able to do it, right?
[00:41:14] So you'd have to sort through a few vacations maybe, but it would be in color. It'd be with movement. It would be with sound. It would be, you might even make it better than it was, you know? So if you have a big family like me, that happens because I go to a reunion and they tell me what happened. I said, that's not what happened. This is what happened, right? That's exactly me. Right, right. So what happens is, and Richard Bandler said this best, who's the founder of NLP, one of
[00:41:40] my first instructors, he said, everybody has the right to have a multiple past. You can have as many pasts as you want. You can have the one you think you had, but you've already distorted, deleted, and changed it anyway to support your current position. Or you can change it. So that's why they call it NLP, the change personal history technique. So you go back in time and you change the memory. What could you learn from that?
[00:42:04] And one of the exercises I did when I wrote the programs for DUIs for Arizona, and they didn't know they were getting therapy. You know, they got caught drunk driving and they'd take my course. And so I thought, well, I'm going to give them some, I'm going to play with their brains a little bit and get them, because you don't just get pulled over for drunk driving. Your brain's telling you, you need some help, right? Exactly. One thing I asked them, I said, write down on a piece of paper, how old your parents were when you were born. And then we talked a little bit about something else.
[00:42:34] And I go, go back to that piece of paper. Remember you wrote down how old your parents were when you were born? Write down how old you are now. All of them were significantly older than their parents. I said, if you could choose a parent at, some of them said 12 years old, 14 years old, 19 years old, 22 years old. I said, would you really want that parent? Or would you want a parent at your age that has life experience? And they said, oh, I'd rather have the life experience parent. I said, well, you're that parent.
[00:43:04] So what if you could go back and retrain your parent? You know, this is like a Fritz Perls technique, you know, where you're saying, hey, go back and step into the shoes of your parents. Not the way they were, but imagine you could bring your wisdom with you. How would you have liked to be spoken to? Your brain doesn't know the difference between real or imagined. The beauty of it is then when you arrive back to the present, which there's a reason they call it the present, because you don't know what it's going to be till you open it, you know, and the energy's in that moment. It's called the moment now.
[00:43:33] Then now your past doesn't know which one's real or imagined. And they use this in sports all the time, you know, in performance. So I'm thinking people need to do that because remember, we don't lose. We learn. So what did you learn from that experience? And then we have to really be willing, and this is the way I explain it to people. Imagine, Melissa, you and I are out to dinner. We're having a great dinner, but our conversation's so good, we're not eating. It's just so good.
[00:44:01] And then at the end of the dinner, we say, hey, bring us some to-go boxes. They bring us two boxes, and we take them home. I put mine in the refrigerator, and I never eat it because I never eat leftovers. But I push it to the back of the refrigerator. It starts stinking. I know I'm going to have a friend come over, and I go, man, I got to clean out that refrigerator. It's stinking. So I get back in there, and I find this white box. I didn't write on it what it was. I open it up just because I'm curious, and it's green and fuzzy. What do I do with it? I throw it away.
[00:44:29] I don't have to send it off to CSI to find out if my parents told me I wasn't good enough or that I wasn't smart enough. I wasn't fast enough. I wasn't whatever it was. I just throw it away because it's meaningless. The past doesn't matter anymore. But what I can do is say, if there was something there, I can forgive them. I can forget the experience, but I can retain the learning. Exactly. Because if you retain the learning, you don't have to go through the cycle again because your brain is a pattern-recognizing machine.
[00:44:57] And it recognizes that as an open loop is what they call an NLP. But if you say to somebody, I'm going to get even with that SOB, I had to get my wife because in business, you're going to get taken by people. The new crime is white-collar psychopaths going after business owners. So we've had that. I got her something to put her mug on. It says, success is the greatest revenge. So it's not getting even with them.
[00:45:27] I told her, he has to live with himself. Imagine waking up with all that BS going on. So don't get involved in their hardwiring. You know, I wish them the best. I hope something happens, they get enlightened or, you know, they start figuring out that there's more. And it's all usually about money. So I always tell people, I used to do these courses in Arizona. And at the time, if we could take all the circulating money on the world and we could pass it out
[00:45:56] to every individual, we'd all get about $3 million. But the fact is, they've already done the research. The same 10% would have that money within 10 years. Because it's not about the money. It's about how we think about money. Yes. Is it energy? Or is it, you know, there's a reason that somebody who wins the lottery, they actually are worse off than somebody who's a paraplegic. Three years after winning the lottery.
[00:46:26] Because they didn't know how to handle that money. So when somebody says, I wish I had this, I wish I had. No, you're exactly where you need to be experiencing exactly what you need to get to the next level of the game for you. And if you can be okay with that, then you'll be in the next level. And you go, where's, like my dad told me there was a friend I had. His name is Charlie Johnson. He's still a friend. I still talk to him on Facebook. But in high school, my dad said, you got to get rid of Charlie Johnson. He's a bad influence. And I said, no, he's my friend.
[00:46:56] We grew up together. He was two houses down from me. I said, he says, no, you keep doing what you're doing, Patrick. And you'll find out Charlie just won't be around. I remember being in line, getting my degree from high school. And I hear this motorcycle guy. And they go, that's Charlie. Why isn't Charlie here getting his diploma? He didn't graduate. And I couldn't remember the last time I had spoke with Charlie. Because I was doing my thing. Right. His thing.
[00:47:22] I didn't put, but as long as my dad told me, in your subconscious, it's like a fourth grader. And if you've ever argued with a fourth grader, you never win. So you don't argue with a fourth grader anymore. You give it something better to do, then you don't have to argue with that fourth grader anymore. You can move on with your life and move on. Yeah. So I love all of this conversation. And it's so aligned with what my audience loves to hear. And just the power that we hold within that we haven't been taught about through our education system.
[00:47:50] And love that you're out there teaching it, that you have your brain tap tool for people to be able to enhance their brain function and protect their brain function for the future as well. And your book. And all of that is available for people that go, huh, my brain is my most important asset. And maybe I need to do more for it.
[00:48:16] So I love to ask people that all the guests that come on my show, Dr. Patrick, what does don't wait for your wake up call mean to you? But just what I said earlier, you don't need a breakdown to have a breakthrough. You know, if people are going to their sick care physician, they need to switch physicians. They need to go to a health care physician, first of all, because they're trained in sick care. I don't want to be trained.
[00:48:41] You know, there's a good recording out there on the internet that says dead doctors don't lie because the average doctor lives to about 54 years old. You know, so why would you ask him for health advice? You know, so find the people that are doing the thing that you want to do and learn from them. We all need mentors. I still take training. You know, I still read books. I still every day I'm learning something new. I don't think I know everything. If I think I know everything, then again, I'm going to start rotting.
[00:49:12] Today's new and different. I don't even know. I didn't even know what I was going to say in this podcast because I don't I don't want to think that far in advance. I just want my life experience to flow through me and have a great time. And I think most people are waiting for someone something some big magical moment to happen. Some they think they're saw on the way to Damascus and they're going to get hit by a bolt of lightning and they're going to start Christianity or something. You know, no, it's probably going to be a gentle nudge in the right direction or it's going to start screaming at you when you get older.
[00:49:40] Because if you haven't been paying attention. Yeah. My newest book I'm writing is called Getting Old Isn't For Sissies. You know, so because I'm middle aged and I'm 65. So I do a cold plunge every morning. I do my sauna. I do my workout. I'm working out. I can I can beat my grandson at doing the planks. You know, I still want to be because what happens is the biggest thing most people as they age, they don't realize is they can't even get out of the chair. And they don't even exercise their lower half of the body just to stay active enough to do that.
[00:50:10] So I think that the main thing is, is to realize that this is your wake up call. Every morning is your wake up call. And every morning should be wow, like new day at school, new crayons, new pins, new, new pencils, new, new books. Wow, this is great. What am I going to learn? And you brought all the knowledge from all the school days you had before up to this moment. So you're smarter, you're better, you're going to handle this day better. Because you you got this. And I got my my wife a T-shirt that says, God doesn't give you anything you can't handle.
[00:50:40] And then underneath it says, he must think I'm a badass. You know, so, you know, but it's true. You don't get anything you can't handle. And you're the one that has you're the one you've been waiting for. That's my biggest message to people. You are the one you've been waiting for. As soon as you wake up to yourself and realize, hey, you have this infinite potential within you. And you start activating on a daily basis. Energy flows through you. Synchronization happens. You start thinking about somebody to call or text you on the phone or they email you.
[00:51:10] You start going, wow, this is like total coincidence. No, this is the way the world works in synchronicity, in harmony, in coherence. And once you get into the flow, you'll get it. You'll know. That's that's the whole deal. Yeah, that's beautiful. I love it. And if people want to get hold of your books, get hold of BrainTap. Do you want to share how they can do that? I'll make sure everything is shown. We do have a we do have a website called Brain Fitness Blueprint, where you can have those links to like Amazon and all those. It's available everywhere.
[00:51:40] You can get a book because it's published by Hay House. So they've done a good job getting it out there to the market for BrainTap. You're going to supply them with a link because if they want to start training their brain, like I was talking about morning, afternoon and evening and see. And really, if they have a way to measure their sleep, 90 percent of people that do that free 14 day trial that you're going to share with them, they're going to find that their sleep is going to improve. Those other 10 percent, it sometimes takes up to 28 days before. But we've never had anybody not improve their sleep using BrainTap. So that's the number one thing I tell people.
[00:52:10] Test yourself on your sleep. Once you get your sleep going well, your rest of your life will take form and take action. 100 percent. I love that. And yes, I will have all the show notes or all those links in the show notes for the audience. And as we wrap this episode, I just want to ask, are there any I know you've shared so many nuggets of wisdom through this episode. Is there any last nugget that you would like to share with the audience?
[00:52:35] I'm just going to ask people to remember, no one has the right to dictate who you are and what you can accomplish. Those limits are their limits. You set the limits. There's no limits in consciousness. There's only limits in our belief system. So blow through those limits. Get what you want out of life. And remember, it's about being balanced and being in joy. Beautiful. I love that. Thank you so much for coming on the show and sharing all of this wisdom, Dr. Porter.
[00:53:02] And to my audience, thank you for caring about your health, for tuning in each and every week, wanting to learn. As Dr. Porter says, we're either growing or decaying. And you are here growing, learning. And if something resonated from this episode with you that you want to share with someone else, please go ahead and do so. Thank you for investing this time with me on the Don't Wait for Your Wake Up Call podcast. I'm so glad you joined in.
