“Wellness begins with acknowledging and honouring the parts of ourselves that are human.” — Theresa Lambert
This episode tackles how business and success connect with wellness. It is common for people to think that in order to be successful, we have to grind and hustle and force our way to get there.
However, that becomes exhausting when we constantly overachieve, overcommit or overwork ourselves. It is a different kind of quality outcome when success came from certain enthusiasm instead of pressure and force.
Start with creating awareness and recognition within yourself by asking yourself questions and answering them truthfully.
Admit when you are feeling uncomfortable with things. Once that is settled, we can move from awareness to intention n or when something can be a responsibility or put into action. From that place, we can reverse engineer our goals. Set a vision that is different from your goal based on a feeling, in that way, you’ll have access to it every day.
Create awareness, start an intention and enjoy the process. Forget the timeline and drop the pressure. Success comes in different times and forms for different people.
“I have found to be most powerful is to actually create a vision of your life based on how you desire to feel rather than what you desire to achieve.” — Theresa Lambert
Wellness Nuggets:
● When we acknowledge ourselves, we're really able to create things that leave a much more long-lasting impact and what building success from a sustainable place.
● Ask yourself the following questions:
- Who are you doing it all for and why?
- What is it that I actually want? (If you want to feel accomplished, empowered, energized)
- What could I do today that would help me feel accomplished and empowered or energized?
- Could you prove to the court of law that you cannot take a break?
- How can I make it more enjoyable?
● Questioning our thoughts successfully in our minds is an accomplishment
● Perfectionism is just another label that we put out on ourselves so that we have a reason to struggle
● People remember how you make them feel, not what you say

She supports ambitious women entrepreneurs, coaches and leaders to redefine success with elegance and create the impact income and freedom they desire in business and in life. Who doesn't want to income and who doesn't want freedom? Let's be real. In 2020 Teresa became the best selling author of her book achieve with grace, which I love the title, my middle name is Grace, a guide to elegance and effectiveness in intense workplaces. She is also a speaker and the podcast host of dissecting success. So success is on your radar. You guys make sure you check out her podcast I you won't be disappointed. So Teresa, welcome to the show.
Theresa Lambert:Oh, my goodness. So fun. I didn't know your middle name was grace. I love that.
Jenny Ryce:It's divine timing, right?
Theresa Lambert:divine timing.
Jenny Ryce:So I want to dig in right away and ask you a juicy question. So in this podcast, our hope is always to inspire people to redefine their wellness and what health looks like for them in all areas and aspects of their life. So when you think of wellness, what does that really mean to you?
Theresa Lambert:It's such a powerful question. And I think where I want to start with is that I used to believe that wellness and self care was like really a waste of time. And it was about you know, like a spa day door. Like, you know, like it was kind of like, yeah, you know, it's like that thing you do to treat yourself, you know, when you've been working hard and like you need a reward. So wellness, really in that sense, before I really sunk in like it sunk in that it is something so different. Used to be just a thing you just do every now and then. And what I came to realize, for me is that wellness is really your ability to have a holistic approach to how you live and lead your life, yourself, your business. Well, if you work for an organization, how you lead yourself in the organization to really understand that we are not just one part of ourselves, we're many parts. and wellness ultimately requires us to accept and acknowledge all of those parts and look after all of those parts. So you know, wellness has different ways that it can show up. Yes, it can be the spa date, and I do love myself a good spa time. You know, it's also you know, how you look after your body day after day, what you feel your body with, if you're moving, you know, what do you consume online, right, and that you are observing what you consume, rather than absorbing what you're consuming. So it's really more a state of being for me, but we're really respecting and honoring all of ourselves and our needs.
Jenny Ryce:I'd love that. And you know, we talked about when I when I read out your bio that you're a business and success coach, how does business and success connect to wellness? Like how does that Marian?
Theresa Lambert:Yeah, I mean, I'm on a mission and my mission is to build an eight figure empire for myself so multi million dollar business, myself with ease and to help other entrepreneurs. And coaches do exactly that. And to help leaders, you know, be paid what they want to be paid in their careers, but still have a life still be able to get home and have dinner with a family. And so, you know, I think that we so often we believe, right that in order to get to a place in order to be successful in order to, you know, have the income that we want, have the business that we want, we have to grind and hustle and force our way to get there, like, there was a lot of like, like, at least I grew up like that. And I've come to known for my book journey and a lot of conversations, that this is a belief that I share with a lot of people that in order to be successful, we have to work hard, and often we have to be the hardest working person to get there. You know, especially as women, and the language we've come to know and break through the glass ceiling, you know, prove that you can do the job like, you know, you think about that, and it's exhausting. Like, I think the second, like the first thought that comes into my mind, when I hear break, the glass ceiling is like, Oh my God, that's exhausting. Because it's an upward movement, like we're trying to go up against gravity. And then while we're going up, we're trying to break something like, that doesn't sound like a lot of fun. And so the problem is this, that I feel like we really have it backwards. Because when we show up in our business and in our careers, and creating to success from this place of rushing and exhaustion and force, when you get there, it doesn't actually feel good. And a lot of the times the people that you work with, whether it's clients or whether it's your team, or the work that you produce isn't as high quality as it could be. Because when our energy tank is full, if we are really, you know, like living our life and feel alive and show up with a certain energy and enthusiasm and motivation, the work quality that we deliver is very, very different. And so wellness, for me is really what begins like us really acknowledging and honoring the parts of ourselves that are human, right. Like we're not machines. We weren't designed to go 24 seven, I mean, I don't even know who the heck came up with that idea. Right. But to me, it seems like a very silly idea that we've somehow adopted into this reality where everybody is always like, go, go, go, push, push, push, you know, more money, more, more deaths, bigger title, bigger, that bigger team, bigger house, bigger car, it's like, oh, my God, and then we can't keep up, right? And then when we can't keep up, we think we're broken. And so when we're actually coming from this place off of wellness, right, when we're actually acknowledging that we're not just the career or the title or the business or, you know, the, I don't know, the high achieving woman, right. But that will also, you know, soft and sensitive and calm and that we want peace, like Emma like, Oh, hang on a second, that feels very different to me. And so when we acknowledge that, we're really able to create things that leave a much more long lasting impact. And we're building success from a sustainable place.
Jenny Ryce:Well, and I do I love what you're sharing. And I think what's so interesting is, we forget to that. It this translate in all areas of our lives and all all genders, right? Like we're all afflicted with, with this. overworking, over achieving, over, over over and most of us have inherited this story from somebody in our lifetime. And like you say, who made the rules, like who made the rules and it doesn't matter if you're you're in the workplace, if you're in the home, if you're thick, we all feel this external pressure to be something we're not which really does exactly what you shared. A road our own wellness. And it's a it's kind of a crazy philosophy that like you say, you know, in our westernized world where we have all these advancements in this technology and this awareness and this elevation of understanding that we are really archaic in some of the and then some of our patterns that we've adopted and develop. So when you are working with somebody and and you see this, you see this in them. So let's say I'm I'm sitting here, I'm connected with you, Teresa, and you are like very aware that I'm overachieving working to the bone, not sleeping enough. All the things we just talked about. What are some tactical tips that you could give myself and the viewers obviously the listeners What are some tactical tips to help them to start redirecting that energy into more of a positive flow? Or, or changing some habits, maybe that aren't serving them? What would you advise?
Theresa Lambert:Yeah, I mean, the first part video of that is helping, you know, you recognize what you're doing. Right? So, you know, a powerful question that you can ask yourself is like, Who are you doing it all for? And why? Right? Who are you doing it all for? And why?
Jenny Ryce:Mic drop?
Theresa Lambert:Right? And it's, it's kind of like forces us to go in. And that's really where we have to start. And I always say, you know, it's kind of like that thing, right? Most people think if they're working too much, they need more time management tools. But no time management tools will ever stop you from over achieving or overworking over doing over committing. Because the problem is that we don't even recognize why we're doing it anymore. So what we want to do is we got to draw out all the stories that we're telling ourselves, right? And often when we start to dig questions, when we start to create an awareness around the stories that we tell ourselves, because that's really what it is, these are all stories, we've like, we are our own storybook, and every day you write a new chapter in your book, whether you consciously write it or not is irrelevant. You still write it? And so, you know, you keep going back to chapters, and you're like chapter one, it says, I must work hard, or I am laz y. Yes, work hard, or I am lazy.
Jenny Ryce:I've read that chapter. Okay.
Theresa Lambert:Yeah. And so that chapter turns out to be, you know, not the best chapter as far as being, you know, a functional healthy person, because it always pushes us, right? Because then we go down this rabbit hole. So it's really about starting to create awareness, right? So if I have a chapter that says, you know, if I don't work hard, then I'm lazy. Well, what are we going to make it mean, when we're lazy? Right, what do you make that mean about yourself? If you're lazy, what does that mean? Right. And then we start to really dig deeper into those beliefs that start to, it starts to feel really uncomfortable. And this is where when we do this work on our own, most of us are like, okay, and I'm out, right? Because it gets uncomfortable, it's uncomfortable to admit to yourself that, you know, if you admit that you're lazy, it means that you're a bad person, and that you're not good enough. And that you know, and then you have all these other things like that people might leave you will you lose your job. And you know, and if you lose your job, then you can't pay your bills. And if you can't pay your bills, you end up on the street. I mean, who knows what stories come up, right? Like, it's amazing when we start to really dig, right. And from that place, it's kind of like, Okay, this is now we understand what's driving our behavior. Because our thoughts, words and actions, is what ultimately creates to the reality, like the outcomes that we experience in our life. So if I believe that, if I'm not working hard enough, I'm lazy, and that if I'm lazy, something bad's going to happen. That puts me in a state where I'm feeling unsafe. So we are like, we're putting ourselves in like up, you know, stress response, by me a fact of what we believe and so you will do anything to make sure that you're not lazy. So filling your calendar over committing always being the person that says yes, I can help. Yes, I can stay the extra hour. Yes, I can take on that shift. Yes, I can do that, then I guess I can pick up the kids. And then at the same time, as this doesn't work any more, right. And if somebody comes to me, they already know what they're doing isn't working, right. You know, they know that this isn't functioning anymore, then they're like, you know, that's when we start to hold resentment. And often this is when you see people feeling stuck in their careers. Or maybe they're hitting and, you know, and like in business, they might hit like an income level or nothing's working. There's the whole like, nothing I ever do is lacking, right, but they do all this stuff. And, you know, we hold resentment for people in your relationships, friends, we feel taken advantage off right? Like now we're trying to, to extract do external blaming. This is a natural human thing that we do. So anybody listening, just know, like, if you're blaming other people, for something that you don't like experience, it's fine because we we hardly ever want to take responsibility. But so the next step is really we have the awareness Now, can we take responsibility and just say, Okay, well, this isn't working for me anymore. And I get to rewrite that story for myself. Right? So we're moving from the awareness to intention. And this is where we can get really clear on What is it that I actually want? Like, what is it that you actually want. And what have I bought I have found to be most powerful is to actually create a vision of your life based on how you desire to feel, rather than what you desire to achieve. And then from that place, we can reverse engineer our goals. And this is really powerful. And I've noticed how powerful In fact, it was during the pandemic, because most of us, you know, we have these goals. And then if we don't achieve the goal, by the time that we wanted to achieve it, right, like we go back to beating ourselves up, and we go back to Well, I'm just not good enough. And I don't have enough skills. And I don't have enough disk, right? Like, there's always is not enoughness theme that keeps coming up. There's something that is stopping you from having what you want. But it's also kind of this devastating thing, but it's like I didn't achieve that goal. And that we again, attach meaning to what that means that we haven't made it. The thing is, if you base if you have a vision, which is different from a goal that is based on a feeling, you can actually access that feeling every day. So let's take this into, you know what, we started talking about the whole thing lazy, like maybe you desire to feel accomplished. Right? Right. You want to feel accomplished in your day. Right? Okay, what else, right? They go, Hey, I want to feel accomplished. I want to feel empowered, I want to feel energized. Right. So let's focus on those three so accomplished, empowered and energized. And then we can really think, okay, like, what could I do today? That would help me feel accomplished, empowered, or energized? What's one thing I can do? Okay, I want to actually get the laundry out of the dryer, fold it and put it away.
Jenny Ryce:Right? I make my bed every single morning. So I've done at least one accomplished one thing. And when I go to bed, I see my accomplishment because my bed is beautiful. And I can slide in and it feels so good. I love that.
Theresa Lambert:But you see how we can pick something really simple. And then connect to the feeling of accomplishment. Yeah. Right. And so we start to really pay attention. And we set an intention, right? Like, if you want to feel empowered, okay, well, maybe you're gonna say no to something today. Like that could be like an intention you said, so, you know. And obviously, if it's something that you really want to do, like somebody calls, you know, like, you want to come forth to Hawaii for a week for free? Yeah. So, take this with a grain of salt. But you know, there's a chance something will happen throughout your day, that no, is going to be the answer that you want. And so by merely setting that intention in the morning, we can now actually make a better decision for ourselves. Give you another example. Because I think this is a big one for so many of us, especially now that we work from home, and doors in the separation of space anymore, which is a struggle for a lot of people. As an entrepreneur who's been working from home since the beginning of January. You know, I was relearning that too. But we get to the end of our day, and you start to notice that you're kind of tired. Right and and you've you've probably done more than you need to do already. Anyways, let's face it, like if you're an ambitious woman, chances are you've done a lot today. You've already done a lot by 11 o'clock. So by nine great, but let's just play this out, right? It's five o'clock, you might have been added for however long, you know, eight hours, 10 hours, maybe even. And the fog comes in Oh, you know what I think I'm ready to finish my day. And instantly by this is what we want to really start to tune in and like tune up your awareness frequency. Okay, what happens next is often that Oh, no, but I can't stop. Right? Well, going back to because if I stop, if I don't get this done, if I'm not doing enough, then I'm lazy. And if I'm lazy, right, we're going back down the brulotte. This all happens in like a second, right? It's crazy, right? It is crazy. Like it is crazy. Like your brain is like a super powered machine, right? So we've trained it to have certain responses and they happen so fast that you're not even aware of what's happening. Like your brain has constant conversation with yourself, you if we want to know it like you can only at one time, have awareness of seven things at one time. Otherwise you would just you'd go crazy. Because it's too much. It's overload literally too much. But so the thought comes in, and then you're like no I can't right. So this is what we want to again, kind of like this is like a bit of like A mind trick, if you will. Well, now what you can do is you can ask yourself, okay, I see, there's 100 emails, I see my to do list, but I'm recognizing I'm kind of feeling like I'm done, I'm recognizing that maybe I'm feeling tired and things have started to take longer already. So what choice would help me feel energized, staying, and continuing to work at my desk on my computer, right, or actually cool thing, the computer and having a cup of tea or maybe a glass of wine, right? Or going for a walk, if it's a nice day outside, you know, now that we're heading into fall, winter to right, like, we don't go outside as much as we I believe we, we can, and fresh as really important, but what you know what feels more energizing, closing the thing, closing the computer, walking away from it, or continuing to push. And that is where very quickly we can't like that feeling Association actually breaks it down to something that we know well. And we're like, No actually going. And like closing, this feels like the right thing to do. And then if you do still continue to walk down the rabbit hole, just ask yourself, you know, that's when we have to start questioning our thoughts that are coming through. Right. So if it's like, I know, I feel more energized to leave, but I can't. Then the question, is that really true? Like, is that really true that you can't? And that's a yes, yes, no question. And if it's Yes, I can't, then the next question to ask yourself in the court of law, could you prove that you truly cannot stop right now?
Jenny Ryce:A jury, I've heard lots of ways to think about that. But this is a new one. And I love that. Could you prove it in a court of law that you weren't able to leave your desk? That is that again, is a light drop? I love that.
Theresa Lambert:Yeah. And like this question. I mean, like, if you're still saying yes, at this point, by then, like I, you know, it's going to take a lot of
Jenny Ryce:we might need to have an intervention.
Theresa Lambert:But most of us at that point are actually like, you know, actually, no, I couldn't prove it. Yeah. Right. Okay. So then you know, it's not true, you know, you can prove it. Right. So at this point in time, what, what choice do you want to make? Because you've already proven to yourself that this isn't working, right? What choice do you want to make? And if you made the choice to leave, how would you feel empowered, energized and also accomplished? Because you have just done something you've never done before? Like, that is pretty cool. Like let's you know, flip what an accomplishment actually is. and questioning your thoughts successfully, in my mind is an accomplishment. We get to do that accomplishment,
Jenny Ryce:and we don't do it enough. We really don't we let the old record keep playing on rebellions. And it you know, works against us. We don't even realize we're actually sabotaging ourselves subconsciously. So, yeah, I love all that you've shared this as it is, I hope everybody that's listening is is really digging in and seeing you know, this podcast my whole mission in life is all about reminding people, they have choice. You have choice in everything that you do. And when you say I didn't have a choice, I love that. Go and imagine you're in front of a Supreme Court judge how are you going to argue that case? I love that I just I'm going to be boring that truce. I hope that's okay. Go Oh my god.
Theresa Lambert:Yes, please do. There's so many ways of doing this and I know one if if that's like if whoever's listening is really interested in that and how you can take that even deeper questioning your thoughts. This was something that Byron Katie and you may have heard of Byron Katie. She's amazing and she's really led a lot of this this work in the coaching world and she calls it the work it's for specific questions, and I've sort of amended them a little bit to move you into action because I'm an action taker and people that are welcome the women that I work with are ambitious so they are action takers so if I can get them to take an action like they're usually like that's like a hell yes. Like you're getting me to do something right like naturally go and move we got it. We got to move like so heads. Action,
Jenny Ryce:you know, Guilty as charged. You know, out of anything uncomfortable is action you like you know, you got to move in action. Look, I'm, I'm on your you're trained for that for sure. So I'm curious as we moving through, you talked about your goals. And I love that you have these really strong goals around what your financial, you know, plan is. And I, you know, I just want to recap Actually, I'm going to ask this question in a sec, I really want to recap what you shared with everybody, just just to remind them super important you guys go inside and listen to yourself. Create the awareness. Right? Then start asking those really beautiful questions, make sure that if you didn't catch them, read, listen and write those beautiful, powerful questions down. Understand your intention by building your vision. And use your vision as a goal to understand how you want to feel and then build your goals and reverse engineer them with the feeling in mind. So I wanted to just capitalize on recapping that because I mean, cool notes version that is some juicy juicy stuff right there. So I just wanted to put that into bite sized piece for for everybody, if you know you might be running right now we want to make sure that you got it all.
Theresa Lambert:Love it. Summarizing that.
Jenny Ryce:Thank you. So what I would love to ask you, knowing that you're on this incredible pathway to not only empower your financial wellness, as well as your success, but to do that with others. What would be something you would share with the younger version of yourself that it has been the biggest game changer in that trajectory?
Theresa Lambert:I would say enjoy the process. Oh, like enjoy the journey, enjoy the process, like forget about a when it's going to happen. Right? Forget it, forget the timeline, like dropped the pressure off. Like, I have to do it by that time. But especially when it comes to big goals, my goals, huge, huge. If I would say to myself, I have to accomplish that in the next like, even five years. I'm sorry, I'm out. It's overwhelming. And I love having big expansive goals. One of the one of the things that is my vision, and how I want to feel is that I lived this extraordinary life, and that I can get to the end of my day and say, You know what, every day of my life, I found a way to live an extraordinary life. And so the idea of building an eight figure business with ease without hustling without working 24 seven, that to me is like that is extraordinary. And I know if I can do it, somebody else can do a two. Right? So So I know that like this path, like it's there is a feeling behind it. Right, but dropped a timeline drop the pressure off of having to achieve it by a certain date, and just enjoy the journey and the process. Because, you know, what's the point of it? If you don't and and if I would have known this? Even 15 years ago, I probably would have, you know, approached things differently. Because reality is, you know, I got to a place in my career when I was still in the hotel world. You know, you mentioned that when you introduce myself, I was 29 when I became a general manager of a luxury boutique hotel. And I had no formal education. I had no like hotel management degree. Yes, I had management experience. And yes, I was good at what I was doing. But you know, I was young. And I was, you know, my ambition was driving everything. And so in order to accomplish a goal. I mean, I sometimes would laugh, but, you know, I would have sold my soul to the devil to get there. Yeah, if you felt like I was like, I don't care what I have to do. And well, actually, there was some things I wouldn't have.
Theresa Lambert:But like I was willing to grind and work hard and you know, do what it takes, like, get to get us to like I was really obsessed and driven by creating results. Because for me, one of my beliefs was that as long as I have proof, as long as I have results, I'm good enough. And it took me working with a coach like with coaches for probably four years to finally drop the last layers of worthiness that I had attached to results. And it's still something that comes up and it's still something that I'm working for. And the thing is your beliefs are formed for so long. So you know, if you spent 3540 years believing one thing, it's not just going to go away. It's just the time it takes to snap yourself back out of it is greatly reduced, right so oh not in that way. But yeah, it's it's really enjoy, enjoy the process and and don't rush, you know, don't rush to get to places because I got to the top, I was creating all the results. And I ultimately was at the top and I felt stuck and alone. And it was a grind keeping it together every single day. And I sometimes feel that if I would have known what I do now, I may have had more love for the job that I was, and I may have had more passion to stay with what I was doing, and I will forever love the hotel world, right? Like, I still do. Like there's beautiful hotels around the world. And who knows, maybe one day I'll open a hotel and do it very differently and have people work a lot less than they do now in that industry. And that was my original mission, when I jumped into my coaching business was really focused on changing the hotel industry and the way we approach work in that industry and the pandemic changed my trajectory. But again, enjoy the process, enjoy the journey, like live every day, in a way that lights you up. And maybe that's a big, you know, setting the standard very high. And some days it might not work. And some days, it doesn't work for me. And you know, I'm like, I am not perfect. And perfectionism. You know, it's it's just another label that we put out on ourselves so that we have a reason to push or reason to, to struggle sometimes. So enjoy the process, enjoy the process, like if you're in a job, that you really want it and you have it. And now you don't want it anymore. Stop focusing on how you could actually make it more enjoyable for yourself. Right? Like rather than thinking every day, all day that you hate your job and you you want out but you can't, right, because that's another story, right? Go back to what I shared, like create the awareness, set a different intention, and start to enjoy the process. And I did that before I left my job before I made this final plunge, I was really focusing on, you know, how can I make it more fun? How can I make it more enjoyable. So, you know, making it a thing to walk around every day and ask different people from different departments, how they're feeling, and checking in with them and asking them what they did on that weekend, and having a laugh. And, you know, it changed the way I was feeling. And I know that you know, by the time I left, I mean, I still am in touch with with the people that are there when I go into the hotel because I live super close. Some of the employees that are still there, you know, they remember my name, they know who I am, like even people who've only had only the chance to walk with me for the last month or so that I was there, remember? And they're smiling when they see me and I'm like, That is incredible. Right? So so make it you know, make it a thing to think about Okay, well how can I make it work for me, right? They give you because I get it I get that, you know financial pressure can put, you know, those golden handcuffs? Yeah, right now there are thing it takes a long time to to have the courage to take the plunge, right. And if you're really miserable with where you're at, right? Like you can get really clear on what you actually really neat, temporarily while you're figuring out what you want to do, but because I don't recommend staying in toxic workplaces, so don't get me wrong, but the shift of focus for yourself, right? How can you make it work? And, you know, what do you want to start doing to get yourself into a different place, it's really start with our responsibility of start to take responsibility for making your journey, your process, more fun, more enjoyable, more joyful. And that, like I said, I think it would have saved me a lot of pain. But, um, you know, we also need to feel it to get to places. So I'm here through it's tricky because of what I learned.
Jenny Ryce:You can't have happy without sad You can't you know, you've got to have the light to get the dark. And vice versa. It's it's one of these things you know, I think I think this is a beautiful place. Not that I want to end our conversation. But I think this is a beautiful spot to transition to the to the end of our episode here.
