Sheryll Mizell:

Hello beautiful people. Welcome to another exciting episode of Wake Up To Your Wow, where we dive deep into the areas of wellness, wealth. And we're, I'm your guide, your host, your girl myself. And I'm so glad you're here today because we are about to explore a topic that's close to my heart and crucial for our well being. It's managing your mental health, while managing your expectations. I wanted to shed some light on this topic because pre pandemic as well as post pandemic, a lot of us have been challenged with mental health issues, and finding ourselves more stressed out and burnt out than ever before. So, for me, this is more than just a conversation. It's a journey towards finding harmony in our lives.

Sheryll Mizell:

Let's dive in. So to kick things off, I want to start with two quotes that I believe perfectly captures the essence of what we're going to talk about today. The first is from Maya Angelou, you may not control all of the events that happened to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. And the second is from Michelle Obama. You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage, instead, is so important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages. Aren't these powerful? Right? It's a reminder that while we may not control all of the external circumstances in our lives, we do have a choice about how we respond to them.

Sheryll Mizell:

Today, we're going to dive into how we can manage our mental health, while balancing the expectations we place on ourselves and those imposed by others. But first, let's discuss why we get to develop a healthy mindset. Building a healthy mindset is crucial for managing both mental health and expectations. A healthy mindset involves cultivating positive thought patterns, focusing on growth, and embracing a balanced perspective on life's challenges. It's about shifting your internal dialogue from negative self talk to one of encouragement and hope. Start by practicing gratitude each day. Take a few moments to reflect on what you're thankful for. This simple practice can shift your focus from what's gone wrong to what's gone right, helping you maintain a positive outlook even during tough times.

Sheryll Mizell:

Additionally, work on reframing those negative thoughts. When you catch yourself thinking something like I'll never succeed. Challenge that thought with a more positive or realistic one such as Success takes time and effort, and I'm on the right path. Embrace the concept of growth mindset as well. This means believing that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. A growth mindset encourages perseverance, and resilience, which is essential for both mental health and managing expectations. By focusing on progress, rather than perfection for all of the perfectionist, you can maintain motivation and build a healthier relationship with your goals.

Sheryll Mizell:

Next, let's understand mental health and expectations. Let's start by breaking down these two essential concepts. So what is mental health and what are expectations? Mental health is a broad term that encompasses our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It influences how we handle stress, relate to others and make decisions. expectations on the other hand, either hopes, or beliefs we have about how things should turn out in our lives. They guide our goals, shape our aspirations, and sometimes set the stage for disappointment. Imagined mental health as the soil and expectations as the seeds we plant. Just as plants need good soil to grow. Our dreams and goals need a strong mental foundation to flourish. When our mental health is robust. We can set realistic goals and manage our expectations effectively. But when mental health suffers, our expectations can become sources of stress and frustration. Understanding this connection helps us see why is crucial to maintain both a healthy mindset and balanced expectations. By nurturing both aspects, we create a more stable and fulfilling path toward our dreams, and simple terms, mental health and expectations are intertwined. Our mental health affects how we manage our expectations, and our expectations can influence our mental health. The goal is to find a balance where our expectations motivate us without overwhelming us. And our mental health supports us and achieving those expectations.

Sheryll Mizell:

So you may ask, why is it so important to manage a mental health? Let's break it down. Mental health isn't just about feeling good is the foundation of how we function in our daily lives. When our mental health is well taken care of, we're more resilient, we can handle stress better, and we generally feel more optimistic about our futures. Think of mental health as your internal support system. When you're mentally healthy, you're better equipped to face life's challenges, set realistic goals and bounce back from setbacks. This is because a healthy mind helps you assess experiences, manage stress and maintain positive outlooks. So like having a well oiled machine that keeps everything running smoothly. When that machine breaks down or gets rusty, everything else can fall apart. Furthermore, managing your mental health is about more than just avoiding problems. It's about enhancing your quality of life. practices like mindfulness, therapy, and self care, and not just for when things go wrong. They are proactive steps that help you stay balanced and content. Taking care of your mental health is an ongoing process. Just like taking care of your physical health. It's about creating a solid foundation for a life filled with purpose enjoy this talk about expectations because we all have them right expectations, but our careers, our relationships and personal achievements, while having goals and dreams is wonderful. Managing these expectations is crucial to maintaining mental well being.

Sheryll Mizell:

One effective way to manage expectations is to set realistic and achievable goals. You know like those smart goals. Think of your expectations as a roadmap for your journey. If the map is too ambitious or unrealistic, you might find yourself lost or frustrated along the way. Instead, break down these big goals into smaller manageable steps. Celebrate each small victory and adjust your plans as needed. This approach helps you stay focused and motivated without setting yourself up for disappointment. Another aspect of managing expectations is being flexible. Life is so unpredictable. And sometimes things don't go as planned. You know life is always lifing you've heard their say. So embrace this uncertainty and be willing to adjust your goals and timelines. Flexibility is not about giving up on your dreams, but about adapting to new circumstances where you're open to change. You can navigate challenges with grace and keep your mental health intact. By setting realistic goals and staying flexible, you can manage your expectations in a way that supports your mental health. This balance helps you stay on track without being overwhelmed by unrealistic demands.

Sheryll Mizell:

Well now that we understand why managing your mental health, and expectations is important. This explores some practical strategies you can use in your everyday life. One effective strategy is to create a self care routine. Self Care is often misunderstood as a luxury or an afterthought. It isn't just about pampering yourself, but it's actually a fundamental aspect of maintaining good mental health. Self care involves taking deliberate actions to preserve and improve your well being. And it's something that should be integrated into your daily routine. Now one key aspect of self care is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes regular physical activity doesn't mean you have to get into a gym and workout for an hour with heavy weights. Right, you can do some regular exercise, walking is a good one. Right having a balanced diet and sufficient sleep. Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood, while a nutritious diet and adequate rest are essential for overall mental and physical health. Additionally, when you engage in activities that you enjoy, and that help you relax, whether it's reading a book, taking a bath, or spending time in nature, the impact is felt in years to come.

Sheryll Mizell:

Another vital component of self care setting boundaries, right you learn to say no, they say it again. Learn to say no to commitments that overwhelm you and prioritize activities that we charge you. Boundaries protect your time and your energy ensuring that you have space for self care and personal reflection. By making self care priority, you're not only enhancing your mental health, but also setting a positive example for those around you. Another key strategy is to practice mindfulness and self reflection. Mindfulness helps you stay present and appreciate the moment while self reflection allows you to evaluate your goals and expectations. Try setting aside time each day for meditation or journaling. These practices can help you stay grounded and focus on what truly matters, rather than getting caught up in stress or anxiety.

Sheryll Mizell:

Lastly, don't hesitate to seek support from others. Your environment plays a significant role in your mental health. Surrounding yourself with positive influence. And creating a space where you feel safe and supported can make a huge difference in how you manage stress and expectations. Start by evaluating your relationships and your interactions. Are the people around you supportive and uplifting? Or do they drain your energy and bring you down? I was once told that your friends and associations are like the buttons in elevator, some bring you up and some bring you down. Right so building a network of friends, families are meant to understand and support your goals can provide you with the encouragement and advice you need to stay on track. And don't be afraid to seek out new relationships or strengthen existing ones that contribute positively to your life.

Sheryll Mizell:

Also pay attention to your physical environment your home, you know your area where you do your work should be organized, comfortable and conducive to your mental well being. Simple changes like decluttering your space and in plants, or creating a cozy corner for relaxation can enhance your mood and reduce stress. Your environment should reflect your values and support your mental health goals.

Sheryll Mizell:

So now we come to this final part of our conversation. Let's talk about growth and resilience. These concepts about how we move forward from challenges and setbacks. Embracing growth means seeing difficulties as opportunities to learn any ball where resistance is about bouncing back from adversity and continuing to pursue your goals to embrace grow. Stop by viewing challenges as lessons rather than failures. When you encounter obstacles, ask yourself what you can learn from this experience. This shift in perspective helps you see setbacks as part of the journey, rather than as roadblocks. It's also important to celebrate your progress no matter how small. acknowledging your achievements, even the little ones reinforces your resilience and motivates you to keep going. Now, resilience is developed through practice and persistence. It involves stay of focus on your goals despite challenges and setbacks. build resilience by setting small, manageable goals and gradually working up to larger ones. Each success strengthens your ability to handle future difficulties. Remember, resilience isn't about never fear. failing and falling, but about rising each time you do.
