PERSPECTIVE – How To Get It On Demand

In this episode John and Kelly talk about the importance of having perspective in life. John gives the example regarding the evolution over the last three years of think it be it. Initially he and Kelly thought think it be it was for everyone. Everyone wants to be successful – right? Wrong. For most people, more success is merely a preference. John says he and Kelly came to appreciate that think it be it is only for people that are driven. Then they discovered a further refinement. It’s for people that really want to play at their full potential, rather than play the game of life at 10 to 20% of their potential – as most people do. Gaining this perspective had such an effect on John. At first he was frustrated. But over the last year, he’s more enthused than ever with the direction of think it be it. Simply from having perspective regarding who it’s really for. Kelly talks about having perspective in her recruitment business. And the impact that the pandemic had on giving her perspective. At the end of the podcast John talks about how to get perspective. Either through outside input or from using our technique of deep thinking two times a week. And how one can gain perspective by articulating in one’s 12 minute a day technique to do one’s “deep thinking” around gaining perspective.

John Mitchell

John’s story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be. it. So what do you think about that? Kelly?

I think it's so important, I think the value of

Kelly Hatfield:

perspective, you can immediately shift your state, shift your

Kelly Hatfield:

when you put things into perspective, and most likely,

Kelly Hatfield:

you're not quite as bad as you think, as they see me as you

Kelly Hatfield:

think they are when you use perspective as a tool to do

Kelly Hatfield:

that. So I'm excited to dig in and talk about this today, John,

John Mitchell:

right. Right. Well, you know, I tell you,

John Mitchell:

it's, it's interesting. I gave you an example in, in my life,

John Mitchell:

the power of perspective. And, and of course, you've lived

John Mitchell:

through this with me, but yeah, you know, what, but three or

John Mitchell:

four years ago, you and I create our course, and we're like, man,

John Mitchell:

everybody's gonna want to do this. Everybody wants to be more

John Mitchell:

successful, we got a 12 minute a day technique, we're gonna crush

John Mitchell:

it. So if we go, well, we don't crush it. We're like, you know,

John Mitchell:

why aren't people you know, lining up for this. And, you

John Mitchell:

know, I think back to you know, I know, I told the story about

John Mitchell:

meeting Darren Hardy and, and showing him all this in our

John Mitchell:

template and our told me today technique, and you guys, John,

John Mitchell:

people are aren't going to do this, they're not gonna spend 12

John Mitchell:

minutes today on on this. And, and he says, reason is because

John Mitchell:

for most people more success is merely a preference, merely a

John Mitchell:

preference. And he says, You got to show this only driven people.

John Mitchell:

And I remember him telling me that I'm like, Really, I you

John Mitchell:

know, okay, you know, more than I do about this, but I just find

John Mitchell:

that hard to believe. Well, he's exactly right. And so yeah, we

John Mitchell:

come out, we create our course. And, and we sell it, but it's

John Mitchell:

not near as many as we thought. And then we're like, Hmm, well,

John Mitchell:

maybe. Maybe we need to really just vet people for being high

John Mitchell:

achievers. And, and that seemed right. And it evolved to where

John Mitchell:

we started doing coaching in conjunction with our course. And

John Mitchell:

so we go to start, not not aggressively marketing it, but

John Mitchell:

going to EO groups, entrepreneurs, organization,

John Mitchell:

graves, were to be in the, in the group, they've got to have a

John Mitchell:

business, that's grossing a million dollars a year. And, but

John Mitchell:

only 5% of them are netting a million a year. And you and I

John Mitchell:

both think, wow, you know, this is perfect, because they're just

John Mitchell:

like you and me, were, you know, a few years ago, and we start

John Mitchell:

pitching it and, and people are taking us up on it, but but

John Mitchell:

they're not lining out the door for it. And, you know, I know,

John Mitchell:

both of us felt, you know, frustration a year or two ago,

John Mitchell:

like a couple years ago, and then we sort of have a change of

John Mitchell:

perspective, maybe maybe the change of perspective came from

John Mitchell:

just dialing in to what is reality, telling us and, you

John Mitchell:

know, then it it became more obvious. Okay, not only do you

John Mitchell:

have to only show this to people that are driven, you need to

John Mitchell:

show this to people that that innately want to play the game

John Mitchell:

of life at 100% That That alone is the driver and have control

John Mitchell:

over their life not necessarily A the money. And and you know, I

John Mitchell:

see today I'm more excited and happy with with think be it than

John Mitchell:

I've ever been. And it's happened from that change of

John Mitchell:

perspective that's evolved over the last probably three years?

John Mitchell:

And it just says that all makes sense.

Kelly Hatfield:

It does and what was the so for you when you're

Kelly Hatfield:

talking about perspective, when I think about perspective, I

Kelly Hatfield:

immediately, you know, when we were talking a little bit about

Kelly Hatfield:

this before we started recording, you know, I

Kelly Hatfield:

immediately went to if, you know, like today, we're having a

Kelly Hatfield:

roof repaired on one of our rentals, you know, and it's

Kelly Hatfield:

like, you know, that wasn't an expense I was planning on. And

Kelly Hatfield:

then I watched the news. And you know, in the Midwest, there's

Kelly Hatfield:

tornadoes ripping through and their roofs ripped off their

Kelly Hatfield:

homes, and I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna get the roof.

John Mitchell:

Maybe this isn't the end of the world,

Kelly Hatfield:

maybe this isn't that big of a deal. You know? So

Kelly Hatfield:

immediately, when I think of perspective, that's kind of

Kelly Hatfield:

where my mind goes, is the, it could be worse, kind of, yeah,

Kelly Hatfield:

you know, so and so when you're talking about perspective,

Kelly Hatfield:

you're talking about it from a different vantage point than I

Kelly Hatfield:

think, when we first went into the conversation, then I was

Kelly Hatfield:

thinking,

John Mitchell:

well, and you know, think about this, I see

John Mitchell:

that gaining perspective happens one of two ways, either a comes

John Mitchell:

from the outside input of somebody else, or it, it comes

John Mitchell:

from you sitting down and thinking through something like

John Mitchell:

having lay, if I've got a challenge in my life, say with

John Mitchell:

the business, me just sitting down and thinking through what

John Mitchell:

is the challenge? How do I fix the challenge? What do I need

John Mitchell:

more information, you know, and I see that, that, that, that was

John Mitchell:

thinking sessions can be how you gain perspective, in fact, you

John Mitchell:

can almost act as as your own consultant for your business.

John Mitchell:

And you're sort of the ideal consultant for your business,

John Mitchell:

because you know, all the nuances that a consultant

John Mitchell:

doesn't know. And, you know, if you just ask yourself in your

John Mitchell:

thinking session, to act as your own consultant, and lo and

John Mitchell:

you're looking at your business from that third party

John Mitchell:

perspective, oftentimes, just that change your perspective can

John Mitchell:

cause you to see things that you won't see if you don't take that

John Mitchell:

outside perspective. And

Kelly Hatfield:

100%, I asked myself, like, as part of if I'm

Kelly Hatfield:

having a challenge, working through a challenge, if I'm, if

Kelly Hatfield:

I have an issue, and I'm having trouble working through it, one

Kelly Hatfield:

of your superpowers is simplifying what may seem to

Kelly Hatfield:

others as being complicated. So I will ask myself, What would

Kelly Hatfield:

John tell me to do? Today, Hey, stupid just.

John Mitchell:

Now Kelly, I think that's a very dangerous

John Mitchell:

thing to be asking yourself. So I would really be careful with

John Mitchell:

that.

Kelly Hatfield:

To the point where you were just saying it

Kelly Hatfield:

pulls me out of myself, right? It would I mean, and makes it

Kelly Hatfield:

external and makes me think about it from a different

Kelly Hatfield:

perspective or viewpoint because I'm too close to it, or too

Kelly Hatfield:

emotional about whatever it is. And so when I asked myself that

Kelly Hatfield:

question, then it's like, Okay, what's a simple way of thinking

Kelly Hatfield:

about this, you know, is really what I'm asking myself because,

Kelly Hatfield:

as I mentioned, that is one of your superpowers. So it's like,

Kelly Hatfield:

Okay, what's, how do I simplify this? You know, I think I've

Kelly Hatfield:

overcomplicated this or have I overcomplicated this? You know,

Kelly Hatfield:

so it's, it's that outside perspective? And that's the

Kelly Hatfield:

question I asked myself is what would How would John think about

Kelly Hatfield:

this? And that helps me work through it.

John Mitchell:

Right, that could also get you in prison, but But

John Mitchell:

you know, it's funny, we've canceled himself Kelly, you're

John Mitchell:

gonna have to shut down this business. You know, it was a

John Mitchell:

good run. But you did what John suggested then you're done.

John Mitchell:

Well, you know, it's funny how that I see that that

John Mitchell:

subconsciously worse because before we got on the air, just a

John Mitchell:

little perspective. I'm creating a new course at the University

John Mitchell:

of Texas that's going to be required of all the the 800

John Mitchell:

athletes to take and we're gonna teach him think it be it better,

John Mitchell:

but I'm gonna go deeper on a number of things because I have,

John Mitchell:

you know, a whole semester to teach him and I I was telling

John Mitchell:

Kelly, the, the titles of the the course the two titles,

John Mitchell:

because I'm too close to it to have perspective. And so I'm

John Mitchell:

blazing really close to what she's telling me and she gives

John Mitchell:

me her opinion, which, you know, was completely contrary to what

John Mitchell:

ginger told me is Ginger about it, and she, she didn't like it.

John Mitchell:

And so but that's the power of getting the wisdom of somebody

John Mitchell:

on the outside to, to give you their opinion. And, and like I

John Mitchell:

was telling you. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go see one of the faculty

John Mitchell:

members in the business school at University of Texas. And and

John Mitchell:

I've got the syllabus written and he's going to review it. And

John Mitchell:

you know, the reality is, I could think, all day long on how

John Mitchell:

to get this thing approved and move it forward. But I don't

John Mitchell:

have his knowledge. And so sometimes solving a problem

John Mitchell:

requires defining what knowledge do you not have? And where can I

John Mitchell:

go to get it? Yep, absolutely. So what's that tell it tell his

John Mitchell:

story in your business about where perspective changed and

John Mitchell:

the impact you had? Yeah,

Kelly Hatfield:

I think the very first thing that comes to mind

Kelly Hatfield:

is just having gone through the pandemic, you know, so in March

Kelly Hatfield:

of 2020, we're rockin and rollin, you know, two of my

Kelly Hatfield:

brands that I have are related to hiring, staffing, recruiting.

Kelly Hatfield:

Well, of course, you know, what happened when everything shut

Kelly Hatfield:

down? Jobs stopped, you know, and so, it was overnight, it was

Kelly Hatfield:

within a week's time of kind of the shutdown, that revenue

Kelly Hatfield:

stopped, you know, and it was like, you know, you know, so

Kelly Hatfield:

going into that solution mode, but a couple of things. So the

Kelly Hatfield:

first thing, as far as perspective was, we had to look

Kelly Hatfield:

at doing business differently. And so one of those is obviously

Kelly Hatfield:

our employees working remotely, which is something we talked

Kelly Hatfield:

about for years, but it was like, Oh, we don't know how

Kelly Hatfield:

we're gonna, like, I don't know, whether I want to do that I

Kelly Hatfield:

like, you know, and so we just always back burnered It, well,

Kelly Hatfield:

we were forced overnight to go remote, you know, and so our

Kelly Hatfield:

perspective change quickly, around, you know, a meeting to

Kelly Hatfield:

operate and change how we went about doing business, you know,

Kelly Hatfield:

and to ask different questions of ourselves, like, okay, so

Kelly Hatfield:

this is happening. So, you know, what is? Are there other ways

Kelly Hatfield:

that we, how can we use this time that we have, you know, so

Kelly Hatfield:

we worked on processes we worked on, you know, of course, we took

Kelly Hatfield:

advantage of the PPP so that we can keep our employees are most

Kelly Hatfield:

of them anyway, but, um, you know, but how I use it now. So

Kelly Hatfield:

this goes back to kind of my example of the roofing issue,

Kelly Hatfield:

right, is when a challenge comes up now. I'm like, we went

Kelly Hatfield:

through the pandemic, this is no big deal.

John Mitchell:

That's a heck of a perspective.

Kelly Hatfield:

Yeah. So it totally shifts your perspective

Kelly Hatfield:

on like, if we can, and before that, like, we started the

Kelly Hatfield:

business 14 years ago, in the depths of a recession. So it was

Kelly Hatfield:

kind of always, like, we started this business, in a recession.

Kelly Hatfield:

So um, you know, so that was kind of always our, our

Kelly Hatfield:

perspective piece when we were going through difficult times.

Kelly Hatfield:

And now it's like, literally, we went through a worldwide

Kelly Hatfield:

pandemic, you know, where many of our competitors didn't make

Kelly Hatfield:

it. And, you know, and so if we did that we couldn't do

Kelly Hatfield:

anything. So for us, it was a real confidence builder. And

Kelly Hatfield:

that's how we choose, we've chosen to use that as just fuel

Kelly Hatfield:

for positivity, like, yeah, these are really lofty goals,

Kelly Hatfield:

but look at what we've made it through, you know, so anyway,

Kelly Hatfield:

that's how that perspective comes into play. For me anyway,

Kelly Hatfield:

that was the first example that jumped out at me,

John Mitchell:

right? Well, you know, I know in in terms of how

John Mitchell:

to apply our 12 minute day technique to this. I know in in,

John Mitchell:

in my visualization, I say something to the effect that all

John Mitchell:

challenges can be figured out either through outside input or

John Mitchell:

thinking through them is one of those two things and, and that

John Mitchell:

has been so incredibly helpful to me just that, that that you

John Mitchell:

know, synods because now, I look at everything very binary. It's

John Mitchell:

either I need to think about it, or I need outside input. And,

John Mitchell:

and, you know, I see every, every problem fits into those,

John Mitchell:

one of those two things. So,

Kelly Hatfield:

no, I love that and and you're so specific,

Kelly Hatfield:

which is so important because this methodology requires that

Kelly Hatfield:

level of specificity, specificity, right? If If I were

Kelly Hatfield:

somebody who was just starting, like when I first started to get

Kelly Hatfield:

into this, so if you were looking for like a light

Kelly Hatfield:

version, and you didn't have a whole process, a great way like

Kelly Hatfield:

I, this goes through my head 20 times a day because it's part of

Kelly Hatfield:

my visualization, which is the quality of the questions you ask

Kelly Hatfield:

yourself and others determines the quality of your life. So

Kelly Hatfield:

when I'm going through a challenge, I'm right away going

Kelly Hatfield:

into how should I be looking at this? How else? What are? What's

Kelly Hatfield:

another way I could look at this situation? What's up because

Kelly Hatfield:

your brain will start to go to work on the solutions? Who else

Kelly Hatfield:

should I ask about this? Right? So like I am, anytime a

Kelly Hatfield:

challenge comes up or whatever, I'm just asking myself the how,

Kelly Hatfield:

what I don't ask myself, why a lot, because that kind of takes

Kelly Hatfield:

you because that can take you into a negative place. So I'm

Kelly Hatfield:

asking how, what, and when questions of myself when I'm

Kelly Hatfield:

looking at that. So that's one way so I would put that, like,

Kelly Hatfield:

it's a mantra that I have the quality of the questions I asked

Kelly Hatfield:

myself and others determines the quality of my life. And that's

Kelly Hatfield:

just running through my head on you know, so I've got it up. I

Kelly Hatfield:

used to I don't anymore up on my mirror in my bathroom. It's up

Kelly Hatfield:

on my phone. It's a screensaver on a lake. So just as a reminder

Kelly Hatfield:

to continue to program my subconscious to be asking myself

Kelly Hatfield:

questions, meaningful questions. And that often gets you to what

Kelly Hatfield:

we're talking about with perspective, but a simpler way

Kelly Hatfield:

to go about doing it.

John Mitchell:

Right. Right. Right. Well, and you know,

John Mitchell:

again, I, I just, I was just thinking about this the other

John Mitchell:

day. You know, ginger, and I were having our Sunday night

John Mitchell:

relationship talk. And I was telling her really two things I

John Mitchell:

was saying, you know, how I love mentally where where I'm at with

John Mitchell:

regards to think it be it and, and the evolution of it. Whereas

John Mitchell:

a couple of years ago, I was frustrated. Well, of course, I

John Mitchell:

was frustrated because I was pitching it to, to people that

John Mitchell:

weren't ideal for it. And whatever you whatever your

John Mitchell:

product is in your business, you got to really be clear about who

John Mitchell:

is my ideal client, because if you're pitching to people that

John Mitchell:

are not really your ideal client, you're going to be

John Mitchell:

frustrated. And and what a difference that perspective has

John Mitchell:

made. And, and you know, I was telling ginger last night, you

John Mitchell:

know, she I think I told you she broke her hand.

Unknown:

Yep. Pickleball pickleball. Right.

John Mitchell:

It was a tragic pickleball Yeah. And so, but she

John Mitchell:

broke a bone in her hand and so she had to have surgery about

John Mitchell:

three weeks ago and she just got the cast off a couple of days

John Mitchell:

ago. And of course, I've lived this with her and it was her

John Mitchell:

right hand which made all the worse and and I'm like ginge you

John Mitchell:

know now just just chill because I'm, I'm the big picture guy.

John Mitchell:

She's the as you know, the, the detail warrior in the group.

John Mitchell:

Yep. And, and I said now, just let's get back to we're living

John Mitchell:

the dream. You know, everyday we're living the dream. Let's

John Mitchell:

save her let's, and she's like, Yes, I needed to hear that. And,

John Mitchell:

and so again, perspective.

Kelly Hatfield:

Yep, absolutely. I love that. So,
