In this episode John and Kelly talk about the importance of one’s morning routine. In fact, John says that a person’s morning routine will determine their success in life. That one thing more than anything else. And he talks about the think it be it 12 minute a day technique. John and Kelly’s morning routine is simply applying the 12 minute a day technique to their respective lives. Reading the succinct articulation of their life from the life GPS template each day. John talks about how simple the concept is. Step one is you create immense clarity about your life. Exactly the person you want to be, exactly what you want to accomplish, and precisely how you can achieve your clearly defined goals. Then step two is feed that clarity to yourself each day – using the think it be it template. That’s what makes everything succinct so it only takes 12 minutes a day to read. And then the third step. After 21 days of feeding that clarity to yourself each day, it then influences your daily thoughts and actions. And those upgraded daily actions then create the life you want. Powerfully simple. John and Kelly laugh about why people can’t get what seems to be so profoundly simple.
About the Hosts:
John Mitchell
John’s story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn’t as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there’s a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.
When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life.
His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.
John’s technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas’ McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. He is also the “mental coach” for the head athletic coaches at the University of Texas as well.

John Mitchell:level. So you can impact your career relationships and health.

Kelly Hatfield:right place. Our mission is to open the door to the exceptional
Kelly Hatfield:life by showing you how to play the game of life at a higher
Kelly Hatfield:level. So you're playing at your full potential rather than at a
Kelly Hatfield:fraction as most people do. We'll share the one thing that
Kelly Hatfield:once we learned it, our lives were transformed. And once you
Kelly Hatfield:learn it, watch what happens. Welcome to think it be the
Kelly Hatfield:podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.
John Mitchell:Hey. And I'm John Michell. So the topic today is
John Mitchell:your morning routine determines your success in life. Kelly,
John Mitchell:would you buy that?
Kelly Hatfield:Amen to that I buy every I buy it? Two times
Kelly Hatfield:over.
John Mitchell:Right, right. Well, you know, I tell you this
John Mitchell:course it's it transformed both our lives, right. Learning the
John Mitchell:12 minute they technique that that is our respective morning
John Mitchell:routine. But, you know, one thing I see that really is
John Mitchell:enlightening to me today is and this, my eyes first got open to
John Mitchell:this about three or four years ago. And I told you this story,
John Mitchell:but I go to I think it was Cleveland for a sort of a
John Mitchell:mastermind thing over three days. And and Jay Abraham, who
John Mitchell:is Tony Robbins mentor, was the featured speaker. And as part of
John Mitchell:the thing I was on the hot seat, you know, I'm on the hot seat,
John Mitchell:Jay Abraham was, you know, sort of the Master of Ceremonies and
John Mitchell:so he's quizzing me. And there's, there's 100 people
John Mitchell:there. You know, they're all entrepreneurs. They're all you
John Mitchell:know, probably making 100 200,000 a year typically
John Mitchell:something like that a lot, a lot of solopreneur partners. And so,
John Mitchell:in the middle of my hotseat thing, I go, well, listen, let
John Mitchell:me ask y'all a question. And I go, how many people have do
John Mitchell:anything to impact their mindset each morning? Well, only one in
John Mitchell:five hands goes up. So 20% and, and I'm like, wow, this is
John Mitchell:interesting, because, you know, I just spent three days with the
John Mitchell:people. And I thought they were all pretty damn sharp. And, and
John Mitchell:I'm like, wow, what don't they get? Now I I understand, my life
John Mitchell:got transformed and increased my income by 25 times from a
John Mitchell:morning routine. So sure, I get it. But I see that. And this is
John Mitchell:so friggin true. Life is a state of mind. And when you wake up
John Mitchell:each morning, you're innately wired for survival, which causes
John Mitchell:you to be fear based and reactive. Well, you have
John Mitchell:absolutely got to fix it. And the only way to fix it is a
John Mitchell:morning routine. That through that repetition, because again,
John Mitchell:the subconscious mind is only influenced with repetition. It's
John Mitchell:that continual repetition every morning that overrides that
John Mitchell:survival orientation and wires you for success. But I am blown
John Mitchell:away by how people don't get that their morning routine at
John Mitchell:the end of the day, determines your success in life. I know you
John Mitchell:buy this.
Kelly Hatfield:Oh, yeah. 100% agree. And I think John, now
Kelly Hatfield:more than ever. Yeah, I think the the need to influence our
Kelly Hatfield:mindset. You know, and framing and starting your day, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:setting the plate for your day, by having a technique. And a
Kelly Hatfield:morning routine that sets you up for success is critical with all
Kelly Hatfield:of the things that we have how fast things are moving right
Kelly Hatfield:now. Everything's coming out you it puts you into this proactive
Kelly Hatfield:mode you've got if you're not taking in the right things. So
Kelly Hatfield:you've got too much of the wrong influences coming into your
Kelly Hatfield:brain. It impacts things stress impacts things drastically. So
Kelly Hatfield:when you're just like, you know waking up, you know and go kind
Kelly Hatfield:of full, you know, bouncing through the day like a ping
Kelly Hatfield:pong, you know, a ball within a Ping Pong machine, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:that's what my mind how I see it right now on earth can you
Kelly Hatfield:expect to, you know, be efficient, you know, have the
Kelly Hatfield:right mindset to achieve the things that you want to achieve,
Kelly Hatfield:and be happy, you know, and so anyway, but we're 100% on the
Kelly Hatfield:same page. And I think more so now than ever, as wonderful as
Kelly Hatfield:technology is. It also, you know, has the reverse side to
Kelly Hatfield:it. And I think that now, so more than ever, it's critical
Kelly Hatfield:that you are, you've got a morning routine, and a mindset
Kelly Hatfield:practice that sets you up for success. You know,
John Mitchell:I last week, I had a group of 10 entrepreneurs
John Mitchell:over to my house and so I was explaining, think it be it to
John Mitchell:him. And about midway through the process, I asked everybody,
John Mitchell:I go, just close your eyes for a minute. Just close your eyes.
John Mitchell:And think about your morning routine, whatever that is. And,
John Mitchell:and, you know, so everybody closes her eyes, and they're
John Mitchell:thinking about their, their morning routine. And I'm having
John Mitchell:them think about is are you doing anything to impact your
John Mitchell:your mindset? And you know, largely, the morning routine,
John Mitchell:quote unquote, is I get up, I have breakfast, I brush my
John Mitchell:teeth. I'm out the door. Yeah, that's the morning routine. It's
John Mitchell:it has nothing to do with mindset. And, and then I go,
John Mitchell:okay, okay, now that you got your mindset Are you got your
John Mitchell:morning routine routine in your head, and you're thinking about
John Mitchell:it. And this is also after I explained that we're innately
John Mitchell:wired for survival, which is causing you to be innately wired
John Mitchell:to be fear based and reactive. I go, imagine, if you had a
John Mitchell:morning routine that took 12 minutes a day, where you fed
John Mitchell:this a synced articulation of your life to yourself each day,
John Mitchell:you know exactly the person you wanted to be exactly what you
John Mitchell:want to accomplish, and precisely how you're going to
John Mitchell:achieve your clearly defined goals. What if you had a morning
John Mitchell:routine? Like that? And that was what you're feeding every day?
John Mitchell:Do you think it would change your life? And, you know, is
John Mitchell:interesting, cuz I don't know, I guess out of the 10 people, you
John Mitchell:know, eight of them said, Boy, I want to learn this thing could
John Mitchell:be it. And I if I had to guess that was the pivotal, pivotal
John Mitchell:moment when they said, Oh, I'm now I'm connecting the dots that
John Mitchell:my success in life ultimately comes down to impacting my
John Mitchell:mindset. Because at the end of the day, life is a state of
John Mitchell:mind.
Kelly Hatfield:Absolutely. No. And I mean, what a difference
Kelly Hatfield:maker, you know, we talk about this all the time, I've said it
Kelly Hatfield:a million times, probably in different settings, about, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, this morning routine, and being very clear. I mean, you're
Kelly Hatfield:starting your day, and we talk about the reticular activating
Kelly Hatfield:system being the filter for your life, basically, right? We're
Kelly Hatfield:informing it, you know, you are giving it its operation
Kelly Hatfield:instructions for the day about how you're going to navigate and
Kelly Hatfield:you know, how you're going to show up and it makes all the
Kelly Hatfield:difference in the world. Otherwise, you know, one thing
Kelly Hatfield:and I've talked about this, too, running on that proverbial
Kelly Hatfield:treadmill numb, kind of sleepwalking through life,
Kelly Hatfield:Groundhog's Day, rinse and repeat whatever it is, you're
Kelly Hatfield:not experiencing life, part of this morning routine, too. You
Kelly Hatfield:know, where you're setting yourself up for the day? We've
Kelly Hatfield:only got one go around at this right? Do you want to actually
Kelly Hatfield:experience life? Or do you want to be in the pinball machine?
Kelly Hatfield:Around? Or do you want to squeeze every bit you can out of
Kelly Hatfield:each moment at each interaction that you have with people show
Kelly Hatfield:up in a different way so that you're experiencing life
Kelly Hatfield:different and the people in your life are experiencing different
Kelly Hatfield:as a result of how you're showing up? And this this
Kelly Hatfield:morning routine helps you do that?
John Mitchell:Why? Why don't you think people see this more
John Mitchell:clearly?
Kelly Hatfield:You know, I think there are, I think just
Kelly Hatfield:probably a closed, you know, mindset. I think people there
Kelly Hatfield:are people who from a self awareness standpoint, right?
Kelly Hatfield:That that's a piece of the puzzle that's kind of missing,
Kelly Hatfield:do they have that closed mindset, meaning they don't have
Kelly Hatfield:a growth mindset? Right. So, you know, I think there are just
Kelly Hatfield:some people on that, you know, and I think to listen, it all
Kelly Hatfield:has to do with how you're wired. We're talking about your
Kelly Hatfield:subconscious, and right and rewiring that some people's self
Kelly Hatfield:subconscious can be, I think so strong with the stories they've
Kelly Hatfield:told themselves like, oh, I tried that before, it didn't
Kelly Hatfield:work for me. Okay, why? Did you try it consistently over a
Kelly Hatfield:period of time? Or did you try it once and the magic didn't
Kelly Hatfield:happen? You know, you know, right away. And so you just
Kelly Hatfield:stopped doing it? You know, I think that people get hardwired
Kelly Hatfield:into this. Oh, I've tried that closed mindset. Oh, I've tried
Kelly Hatfield:that before won't work for me, or oh, that sounds woowoo? Or,
Kelly Hatfield:yeah, so they just have that closed mindset. I think that's
Kelly Hatfield:one of the things what do you think?
John Mitchell:Well, you know, I tell you, you know, and I know
John Mitchell:you, because you had to put up with me saying it a couple of
John Mitchell:years ago, you know, I'd go people, what the hell do you not
John Mitchell:get your you're wired for survival. Which is means you're
John Mitchell:not wired for success. You know, if you're fear based and
John Mitchell:reactive, then that's the opposite of how you need to be
John Mitchell:if you want to be successful. So, yeah, let's just get that
John Mitchell:out there. So if it wouldn't it make sense to take the st
John Mitchell:articulation of your life and feed it to yourself every more
John Mitchell:every morning. And then of course, it would influence your
John Mitchell:daily actions, and then those improved daily actions, then
John Mitchell:we'd create the life you want. I'm like, people, this thing
John Mitchell:doesn't get any simpler than that. Come on, let's get it.
John Mitchell:And, you know, and then over the last couple of years, I think
John Mitchell:I've been become more accepting of people. And I go, Well, you
John Mitchell:know, everybody's, everybody's different. You know, everybody,
John Mitchell:everybody is simply a function of, of their genetics, what has
John Mitchell:come into their consciousness to this point, and whether they
John Mitchell:have testosterone or estrogen flowing through their veins,
John Mitchell:those are the three factors that, that create each of us.
John Mitchell:And over the last year or so I'm going, you know, okay, I see why
John Mitchell:people don't get it. They don't have the same genetics I have. I
John Mitchell:don't have the they don't have the same life experiences I've
John Mitchell:had at but I don't know, lately, I'm sort of going back a little
John Mitchell:too, like I was I'm like, come on. Yes, I get all that. But
John Mitchell:come on, you gotta have a basic level of intelligence. This is
John Mitchell:so freakin simple, it hurts. And, and, and, but because I see
John Mitchell:that what what we've really created is a life operating
John Mitchell:system for smart people. And, and I hate to say this, but if
John Mitchell:you're not smart, you probably don't get it. You know. That
John Mitchell:terrible design.
Kelly Hatfield:I love it's fun just tells it like it is. It's
Kelly Hatfield:like listen, if you're stupid, stop listening right now.
John Mitchell:You know, you cannot fix stupid, I've cried
John Mitchell:and you cannot fix stupid.
Kelly Hatfield:And I think, you know, with this idea of this
Kelly Hatfield:morning routine, and, you know, some things may be coming up,
Kelly Hatfield:you know, as you're thinking about this, you'll start to feel
Kelly Hatfield:that resistance, like your brain is designed to protect you. It's
Kelly Hatfield:designed to keep you in that little comfort zone and
Kelly Hatfield:everything. And so, you know, the excuses start to fly well,
Kelly Hatfield:I'm my morning is already packed, I don't have time for
Kelly Hatfield:you know, 12 minutes a day, well, you have time to scroll up
Kelly Hatfield:a storm at different different points of your day. You know,
Kelly Hatfield:your, your, you know, when I ask people with their morning
Kelly Hatfield:routine is and they're sharing it, it sounds like chaos, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, they're running around there. And it's like, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:you can buy time back by, this is the best 12 minutes of your
Kelly Hatfield:day that you'll spend, and you will win back hours of time by,
Kelly Hatfield:you know, implementing this practice and doing it on a
Kelly Hatfield:consistent basis. And, anyway,
John Mitchell:well, I you know, I see that, that a lot of people
John Mitchell:there if they, if they do anything, they're going well,
John Mitchell:you know, I do meditation or I do affirmations or I, I exercise
John Mitchell:and, and those things are better than nothing. But and you know,
John Mitchell:I again, I'm I meditate a little each morning, but you know, that
John Mitchell:quiets the mind, the what we do, focuses the mind, that's what
John Mitchell:our 12 minute a day technique does. And I think a lot of
John Mitchell:people struggle with deep meditation And, but why people
John Mitchell:don't see this? More. I'm not exactly sure who I guess I am
John Mitchell:sure. Because we live in such a shallow thinking culture, we
John Mitchell:have so many things coming at us that, that it hasn't resonated
John Mitchell:with people that the morning routine is what determines your
John Mitchell:success in life. And I think that if you had to condense all
John Mitchell:that I've learned in my life, it's that that's your morning
John Mitchell:routine determines your success in life. And the simpler you and
John Mitchell:I can make it for people to see that. Probably the more
John Mitchell:powerful, what we have will be, don't you think?
Kelly Hatfield:Oh, 100%? You know, when we're thinking too,
Kelly Hatfield:about why people don't? I don't know about you, John, but nobody
Kelly Hatfield:taught me how to think. Right, right. You know what I mean, I
Kelly Hatfield:didn't learn how my brain worked in school and what I needed to
Kelly Hatfield:do to, like, we didn't talk about morning routines, or
Kelly Hatfield:routine or mindset, for that matter, like, none of those
Kelly Hatfield:things, at least in my generation, I'm, you know, we're
Kelly Hatfield:an we're part of the youth specifically are part of the
Kelly Hatfield:educational system now at the University of Texas, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:and it's just being integrated in, you know, is it something
Kelly Hatfield:that you learned in high school? Or were a teacher says, Hey,
Kelly Hatfield:here's how your brain works, you know, and here's how to thrive
Kelly Hatfield:and here's how to think and get it. Nobody taught me this? Oh,
Kelly Hatfield:no, I didn't learn this till you taught it to me, you know, and I
Kelly Hatfield:was, you know, in just coming on 40. To turn 40 At that time, so
John Mitchell:yeah, well, and, you know, that's a great point,
John Mitchell:you know, as, as I, you know, what I teach at the University
John Mitchell:of Texas, which is no, no different than what we teach
John Mitchell:entrepreneurs, is purely leadership itself. And just to
John Mitchell:your point, nobody teaches you leadership of self. And, you
John Mitchell:know, to me, you know, leadership itself is starts by
John Mitchell:having the attitude that I can accomplish anything I set my
John Mitchell:mind to, and then it evolves to, you know, personal
John Mitchell:responsibility and never being a victim, always owning your
John Mitchell:results. And if you don't like the results, change the
John Mitchell:behaviors that are creating the results. And but this whole idea
John Mitchell:of leadership of, of self is, is something that really is rarely
John Mitchell:rarely ever taught. But once you go down this rabbit hole, which
John Mitchell:you know, now, as I mentioned, you know, all the athletes at
John Mitchell:the University of Texas or are being required to take my
John Mitchell:course, which is really pretty fun. And, but nobody is really
John Mitchell:taught them formally, leadership itself. Now with the athletes.
John Mitchell:The coaches have taught them leadership itself, but they
John Mitchell:haven't called IT leadership of self. In fact, the coaches have
John Mitchell:set the foundation, and all I do is take it that next level up
John Mitchell:and show it, show them how it applies to be successful in the
John Mitchell:real world. You know, they're teaching them how to be
John Mitchell:successful at their sport. And so it's a bit it's an easy
John Mitchell:transition to now take it maybe at a little more scientific
John Mitchell:level and a lot more a little more formalized and show them
John Mitchell:how to apply it in the real world. But again, leadership
John Mitchell:itself ultimately comes down to your morning routine. percent.
John Mitchell:Yeah. And so that's the power of it. So I hope we got through to
John Mitchell:everybody today and let him
Kelly Hatfield:hear people people
John Mitchell:know, probably Apple podcast is gonna go you
John Mitchell:know, those two, you don't want to listen to that, that think
John Mitchell:it'd be at the podcast. Those two are just abusing their
