In this episode John and Kelly talk about the importance of having a “system” for growing. A weekly system that is both consistent as well as strategic relative to what you want to accomplish. When you have such a system, you become what they call a “conduit of learning”. Kelly talks about how every Sunday she figures out what she’s going to listen to during the coming week. And then sets it up so she can listen to the content. John then explains his system. He sources three different podcast hosts. And every Monday morning he looks at the latest podcast from those three hosts. He then decides the two specific episodes he wants to listen to during the coming week and downloads them. And then he listens to them why he is exercising or driving. So it takes no additional time out of his busy schedule. John also notes that he takes notes on what he learns. And then at the start of each new quarter, he reviews his notes from the prior quarter. John mentions that the two biggest things he learned last quarter is the critical importance regarding tuning into reality. What is reality telling him regarding what he’s doing. He also talks about learning the power of doing what you say you’re going to do.

John Mitchell:And I'm John Michell. So today, we've got a
John Mitchell:topic that I think you guys will find interesting. You know, life
John Mitchell:is all about growing, and, and evolving intellectually. And so
John Mitchell:my, the topic today is really, do you have a system for
John Mitchell:growing? And do you have a system for reviewing what you've
John Mitchell:learned in the past. And with that, as the subject I'll share
John Mitchell:with you, sort of my system, and Kelly, then utilise yours, but
John Mitchell:you know, so I have a system where I pick basically three,
John Mitchell:three podcasts that I follow, you know, that are relative to
John Mitchell:entrepreneurs and, and to sports coaches. And so I have three
John Mitchell:different podcasts that I follow. And every Monday, I look
John Mitchell:and see what episodes what new episodes are there. And I pick
John Mitchell:two specific episodes out of those three different podcasts.
John Mitchell:And I listen to the episodes during the week. But, and that's
John Mitchell:how it evolves every week for me. And I, I send myself an
John Mitchell:email, those episodes that I'm going to listen to on Monday, so
John Mitchell:that I really start listing, Monday at lunch, and then
John Mitchell:through the end of the week. But the other thing I am big on is,
John Mitchell:is recording what I'm learning. And I have a place that when I
John Mitchell:like read a book, I'll take notes, and then I'll record the
John Mitchell:notes in this particular file that I have. And so I'm tracking
John Mitchell:what I'm learning. And, and lately, I've been tracking what
John Mitchell:I've been learning every week by looking at what I'm writing in
John Mitchell:my thinking tablet, which is this technique of thinking two
John Mitchell:times a week. But that's how I do it. And so Kelly, tell us how
John Mitchell:you do it. And then I want to talk a little deeper about why,
John Mitchell:you know, reviewing what you're learning is important. So how do
John Mitchell:you how do you do it.
Kelly Hatfield:So I've got part of what I do each week. So I
Kelly Hatfield:have a review that I do each week, and it's part of my
Kelly Hatfield:planning session for the following week. So um, whatever
Kelly Hatfield:I listened to, as far as the you know, whether it's a podcast, or
Kelly Hatfield:whether it was a specific training that I did, or, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, we've got a monthly learning team learning growth
Kelly Hatfield:session that we do. And so it could be the download from that.
Kelly Hatfield:But basically, I'll use voice notes while I'm listening to it.
Kelly Hatfield:Because a lot of the time I'm doing something like getting
Kelly Hatfield:ready in the morning, or I'm on the treadmill. So something
Kelly Hatfield:really like jumps out at me. I'm like, Okay, I need to, I need to
Kelly Hatfield:be thinking about that more deeply. I'm using I'm putting it
Kelly Hatfield:into my thinking session, you know, it might even be an
Kelly Hatfield:episode that I will go back. And because I'll timestamp it like,
Kelly Hatfield:Okay, I need to come back to 10 minutes and 30 seconds, because
Kelly Hatfield:everything from there for the next five minutes was like
Kelly Hatfield:really the essence of what I want to be thinking more deeply
Kelly Hatfield:about. Right? And so I go through that process during the
Kelly Hatfield:week and then on Sunday, I'm looking at okay, when I did my
Kelly Hatfield:thinking session, were there any like what action items were
Kelly Hatfield:there? You know, what were my takeaways do any of those need
Kelly Hatfield:to go on to my calendar for the next week, as far as planning is
Kelly Hatfield:concerned? Or so I'm looking at it. I haven't been looking at it
Kelly Hatfield:specifically in terms of what did I learn? It's more so okay,
Kelly Hatfield:like what were my key takeaways? And then if there were any
Kelly Hatfield:action items as a result of this thinking sessions, am I moving
Kelly Hatfield:this project forward or what I learned forward? Or how do I
Kelly Hatfield:move it forward by getting it on Mike? calendar and making the
Kelly Hatfield:space for the following week. So that's kind of my process.
John Mitchell:Right? You know, I think probably when people
John Mitchell:hear how we do it, they're like, whoa, that's, that's way too
John Mitchell:complicated for me. And but it doesn't have to be, you know,
John Mitchell:you're listening to two people that are serious growers, you
John Mitchell:know, but you do have to have a simple system, quote, unquote,
John Mitchell:system to grow. Such as, you know, setting up what you're
John Mitchell:gonna grow, what you're gonna listen to, at the start of the
John Mitchell:week, and then listen to it. By the way, that's pretty simple.
John Mitchell:And that's powerful. But one of the things I've sort of see,
John Mitchell:though, is that once you learn something, oftentimes you'll
John Mitchell:forget it unless you go back, and, and read it again. And so
John Mitchell:that's the next iteration to growing is, is capturing those
John Mitchell:really powerful things you're learning and review them. And,
John Mitchell:and it sticks in my head, this idea that, that it's better to
John Mitchell:read one great book 10 times than 10, good books. And, and
John Mitchell:I'm big believer in that. And so along that lines, you have to,
John Mitchell:you have to record those things that you're learning so that,
John Mitchell:you know, like I do it once a quarter, the first week of the
John Mitchell:new quarter, I'm gonna go back and review all the notes I had
John Mitchell:for the past quarter, and probably for the past year. And,
John Mitchell:and it's pretty powerful. And I was and as we launched into this
John Mitchell:whole idea I was this week looking at what I learned last
John Mitchell:quarter, and I think the most powerful thing I learned was
John Mitchell:what we had a podcast episode on this a while back, where you
John Mitchell:have to tune in to reality. Because reality is the the most
John Mitchell:efficient way things work. And so if you, you know, don't tuned
John Mitchell:in or reality, let's, let's say you're in a business, and you're
John Mitchell:sort of going along, but you're oblivious to are we getting more
John Mitchell:sales are? Are more and more leads coming in? Or is the
John Mitchell:opposite having happening, fewer leads are coming in, you know,
John Mitchell:you've got to tune in to reality, and see, what is it
John Mitchell:telling you, you may not like it. But the sooner you tune in
John Mitchell:to reality, and adjust your behavior so that the results
John Mitchell:that reality is giving you are more favorable, you're always
John Mitchell:going to struggle, and I never, I never really got this as deep
John Mitchell:as I do today. What do you think was this past? Say, since the
John Mitchell:start of the year? What do you think, is the biggest lesson
John Mitchell:you've gotten?
Kelly Hatfield:I would think and listen, I know, I knew this,
Kelly Hatfield:you know, but common sense isn't always common practice. Right?
Kelly Hatfield:So, um, you know, one of the key things for me, is really, I've
Kelly Hatfield:been able to exponentially change and I've got a great
Kelly Hatfield:mindset. But you know, honestly, um, you know, with everything
Kelly Hatfield:that's been going on in the world, and with, you know, just
Kelly Hatfield:all of this uncertainty, and, you know, we know that our, we
Kelly Hatfield:naturally are fearful, you know, our brains are geared for that.
Kelly Hatfield:And so, for me, it was, I got rid of every news, social media,
Kelly Hatfield:app, anything on my phone, I limit my intake of the news,
Kelly Hatfield:because I want to stay informed, doesn't need to be on in the
Kelly Hatfield:office, it doesn't need to be on in the background, filling my
Kelly Hatfield:brain with anxiety and everything, even though maybe
Kelly Hatfield:I'm not really listening to it, your brain is yeah, there. You
Kelly Hatfield:know. So I think turning that off, being very intentional
Kelly Hatfield:about how I consume those things, and at what time of day,
Kelly Hatfield:and like really dialing that in, because the life, the role of an
Kelly Hatfield:entrepreneur, of a business owner of it, like it's all a bit
Kelly Hatfield:what's happening in your mind, in your mindset. And so really
Kelly Hatfield:protecting that protecting what you're allowing the input that
Kelly Hatfield:you're allowing into your life and into your, you know, your
Kelly Hatfield:brain. And so, and I again, I knew these things, but you just
Kelly Hatfield:fall into some old patterns. And, you know, so back into my
Kelly Hatfield:visualization it went so that I could correct some of that
Kelly Hatfield:behavior that was just fine on autopilot. And it made a huge
Kelly Hatfield:difference.
John Mitchell:Yeah, that's, that's great. I completely agree
John Mitchell:with you. I mean, it goes back to what we were talking about a
John Mitchell:while ago, you know, life is a state of mind. Yep. And so how
John Mitchell:are you controlling your state of mind? Yep. You know, the
John Mitchell:other thing that I noticed that was a big one for me last
John Mitchell:quarter was that just the pure power of doing what you say
John Mitchell:you're going to do, and how, as you and I have learned, and
John Mitchell:coaching people, you know, everybody says they do what they
John Mitchell:say they're going to do. And then when they when you really
John Mitchell:sort of dig a little deeper, oftentimes, you see that they're
John Mitchell:doing it, maybe 40% of the time. And, and this is such an aha
John Mitchell:moment with people. And it's sort of a good or a bad thing,
John Mitchell:you know, they discover that they're not doing it, and they
John Mitchell:feel bad about it. But then, you know, you teach them how that if
John Mitchell:now you're conscious of doing what you say you're going to do,
John Mitchell:it'll make them way more conscious about what they say
John Mitchell:they will, they will do, and then they'll actually do it.
John Mitchell:And, and, of course, it's easy to articulate this in our life
John Mitchell:GPS template, and that, you know, I do what I say, I'm going
John Mitchell:to do both with myself and other people. But I see that when
John Mitchell:people really embrace this, they typically get twice as much done
John Mitchell:from just that mindset shift. Right?
Kelly Hatfield:Absolutely. Well, you know, we talk about
Kelly Hatfield:how precious life is, you know, and, you know, so when you're
Kelly Hatfield:very intentional, you know, about and having a sense of
Kelly Hatfield:urgency about life, about what you say yes to, and this goes
Kelly Hatfield:back to what you were just talking about the things that
Kelly Hatfield:you commit to doing and following through and doing them
Kelly Hatfield:the thing, you know, you begin to filter everything through
Kelly Hatfield:that, like, Hey, listen, is this aligned with you? No, no, can I
Kelly Hatfield:really get this done in the time limit? No. So So you start
Kelly Hatfield:editing, the things you're saying yes to, and then watch
Kelly Hatfield:what happens as far as momentum, if you're really have a lot of
Kelly Hatfield:clarity around what your goals are, what you want, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:what you want to achieve, how you want to show up, you know,
Kelly Hatfield:and then you start planning and acting in alignment with that,
Kelly Hatfield:and then keeping your word to yourself, the momentum, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, it just happens so quickly, and you get so much
Kelly Hatfield:more done. Because you're not doing all that fluffy stuff that
Kelly Hatfield:you shouldn't have said yes to to begin with. And then you're
Kelly Hatfield:not diluting any of your energy by being stressed about the fact
Kelly Hatfield:you've committed to something that you really aren't going to
Kelly Hatfield:do, you know, or you haven't done and you've let somebody
Kelly Hatfield:down, and there's this whole cascade that happens that just
Kelly Hatfield:shifts your energy and slows everything down. And so when you
Kelly Hatfield:do this, the way you just get on with that keeping your word to
Kelly Hatfield:yourself, oh my gosh, right. It's just everything.
John Mitchell:Right? You know, using our technique, one of the
John Mitchell:things I noticed is, is, of course, I feel big time guilt.
John Mitchell:If I don't do something I say I'm gonna do, which is great.
John Mitchell:You know that guilt is a powerful thing. And so I'm glad
John Mitchell:it's there. But if if I actually see that I didn't do something I
John Mitchell:said, I'm going to do, I'm going to by God do it the next time.
John Mitchell:And if I see that I it doesn't happen again. I'm going to
John Mitchell:change the wording in my visualization in terms of what
John Mitchell:I'm how I'm saying it, because evidently, my subconscious mind
John Mitchell:doesn't like how I'm saying it or doesn't appreciate the
John Mitchell:importance of whatever it is.
Kelly Hatfield:It's John, it's so interesting that you say that
Kelly Hatfield:because in my life, GPS or visualization, I change the
Kelly Hatfield:wording to be I'm deliberate. And intentional about what I say
Kelly Hatfield:yes. And what I say no to. Yeah. So like, now I've trained myself
Kelly Hatfield:that in the moment, I rarely will give somebody an answer. I
Kelly Hatfield:slow down because my, my autopilot that 95% subconscious
Kelly Hatfield:happens subconsciously would be to just right in the moment.
Kelly Hatfield:Right? Well, that gets me nowhere. So by saving that
Kelly Hatfield:space, then I'm able to slow down and say, okay, here are my
Kelly Hatfield:goals. Here's really let me get a realistic picture. Is this
Kelly Hatfield:aligned? Does this make sense for me to, to commit to this?
Kelly Hatfield:And then I can circle back with the person and say no,
Kelly Hatfield:graciously, you know, I agree to do it. But I'm deliberate and
Kelly Hatfield:intentional. And by using those specific words, those words work
Kelly Hatfield:for me. You know, so I love that just again, those little nuances
Kelly Hatfield:where you can shift something and it makes all the difference
Kelly Hatfield:in the world.
John Mitchell:Right. You know, one final thing that that that
John Mitchell:that's interesting that I observed about life is how
John Mitchell:beneficial, the wisdom of other people can be relative to your
John Mitchell:life. And I was thinking I was watching this new show on on
John Mitchell:Apple TV about Boris Becker remember, Boris Becker, the
John Mitchell:tennis player, you know, he ended up, you know, when he won
John Mitchell:Wimbledon a couple of times, and he, but he ended up going to
John Mitchell:jail for tax fraud. And, and it's an interesting story. But I
John Mitchell:remember and I don't know if I've ever told you this. But,
John Mitchell:you know, my claim to fame in high school was, I won the
John Mitchell:district's singles title in tennis, three years in a row,
John Mitchell:which nobody, nobody had had, of course, this is for Texas,
John Mitchell:Catholic high schools, which you know, means, you know, probably
John Mitchell:any public school school kid could beat me, but, you know, I
John Mitchell:wanted three years in a row the district and was second in the
John Mitchell:state. And, and, you know, I never really took tennis at all
John Mitchell:that serious, I was naturally good at it. Because when I was
John Mitchell:in seventh and eighth grade, a friend of mine, and I just
John Mitchell:played all the time, and we were just, we just got good. And my
John Mitchell:main sport was football. But I'm watching this Boris Becker
John Mitchell:thing. And I'm like, Boy, I tell you, you know, I would have
John Mitchell:loved or somebody in my life to come to me and say, Now, John,
John Mitchell:how it first of all, how important is tennis to you. Let
John Mitchell:me point out something to you, you're going to be as good as
John Mitchell:you make yourself good is not going to be how talented you
John Mitchell:are. It's how hard you work to be good at tennis. That's what's
John Mitchell:gonna determine it. And I know if if I heard that I would like,
John Mitchell:well, I thought, I just thought some people more gifted. Know
John Mitchell:that, that is generally not the case. It's who's working the
John Mitchell:hardest. And, and, you know, I also would have probably told
John Mitchell:myself, that, look who your coach is, he's the algebra
John Mitchell:teacher. And he's Tom, really, you're not really a, you know,
John Mitchell:tennis coach, if you're serious about this, get a real coach.
John Mitchell:And, and I see how transformative sort of those two
John Mitchell:little piece of his pieces of advice would have been. And I
John Mitchell:would have been a much better tennis player than I was, but
John Mitchell:also see how that plays out in people's lives. Like what you
John Mitchell:and I teach people. And we've, we've seen it, you know, once
John Mitchell:they get it, it's like, Whoa, it's a whole new perspective, a
John Mitchell:whole new level of, of happiness and success from doing this
John Mitchell:thing that somebody teaches them to do, that they had to learn
John Mitchell:from the top book in the world on success. But you know, the
John Mitchell:point of it, is that the wisdom of other people can change your
John Mitchell:life. So,
Kelly Hatfield:absolutely, no, I think it's so important.
Kelly Hatfield:There's no and there's no need to reinvent the wheel. And the
Kelly Hatfield:cool thing is, is that we live in a time now, where you got
Kelly Hatfield:access to like, anything you want to learn. And, like, you
Kelly Hatfield:can get advice from the people at the top of their game, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, by Googling, you know, and doing some search searches and
Kelly Hatfield:starting to get that input of, you know, mentorships and
Kelly Hatfield:mentorship from afar and again, the wisdom of others. So no, I
Kelly Hatfield:love this, John, it's such a great, it's so important to, you
Kelly Hatfield:know, understand that.
John Mitchell:And I'll also say chat GPT is going to change the
John Mitchell:world. I say that with 100% confidence. I just had been
John Mitchell:learning about chat GPT through Darren Hardy, and I'm giving it
John Mitchell:to the 17 head coaches at the University of Texas. And
John Mitchell:justice, just what you said, you know, you can Google it. Well,
John Mitchell:the next evolution of googling it is using chat GPT to learn
John Mitchell:things. So buckle up, because it's, it's coming on strong.
