Before Divorce Consider Marriage Crisis Management

Before Divorce Consider Marriage Crisis Management

In this episode of The D Shift, I have the privilege to welcome Dr. Becky Whetstone, a marriage and family therapist who brings a wealth of personal and professional insights into managing marital crises. Known for her candid approach, Becky’s unique perspective is shaped by her own experiences, having been married four times, and her dedicated research to understanding what makes or breaks a marriage.

Dr. Becky talks about her new book, "I Think I Want Out – What to Do When One of You Wants to End Your Marriage," which is aimed at helping individuals navigate the rocky path from doubt to decision with clarity and confidence. She shares insights into how crucial the initial response is when one partner expresses doubt about the marriage. This response can set the tone for how amicably— or not— things might proceed.

In our discussion, we explore fundamental questions that troubled couples should consider along with the typical stages a deteriorating marriage might go through. Becky's approach is about slowing down, considering all options, and sometimes exploring trial separations to test the waters before making any permanent decisions.

We talk about how vital it is to have a managed process during these times, emphasizing the value of therapy in maintaining civility and focusing on mental wellness for the entire family. Becky's goal is to guide couples through this transformation with the least possible emotional damage, whether they choose to work on their marriage or part ways.

For anyone standing at the crossroads of potentially ending a marriage, this episode is full of, relatable advice and insightful strategies to thoughtfully tackle one of life’s more challenging transitions.
