Candy Motzek:Hello, friends, and welcome to this episode of she coaches coaches. How are you guys? When this episode goes live, we'll be well into fall. I haven't had a chance to ask you how your summer was? Did you have fun? Did you do some fun things? I'd love to hear from you. Share your summer memories with me. We spent a few weeks up on the coast at our cabin. And my private clients were treated to some coaching sessions in a new space with the wood walls of my cabin is the backdrop. Yep, when we're up there, we're on the ocean. And I get to see whales and deer and tons of birds, birds like ravens and eagles and hummingbirds. And a lot of little squirrels running around too. We had a good summer. And I think I might have told you a while ago. But if I didn't or you missed it, my son got married, and he got married up at our cabin. That's pretty exciting for us. And we had a wonderful time. So if you haven't already, I want you to know that I'm continuing my experiment. This started about three episodes ago. Since this podcast sometimes feels one directional, just like me only talking to you. I want to do my best to turn it into more of a discussion. So I want to hear from you. Here's how I've made it as easy as possible. DM me at candy mote sec on Instagram, to tell me what you want to learn more about. Share your ideas with me for other podcast episodes. Tell me where you want some help. Where do you want clarity? Where are you confused? Where are you just want a little bit of support. And I will respond. I read every dm personally, and I respond. And if your topic is something that I think could help a larger audience, I'll do a podcast episode on it. And then I'll dedicate the episode to you. So that's it, send me a DM at candy mode sec. And tell me what you'd like to hear more of. Okay, so that's it for updates. Let's get into today's episode. Here's a question that I received. Do I need to be certified to be a coach? Do I need to have special courses or certifications to have a coaching business and get clients? If I don't have a certification? will it stop me from getting clients? So it's kind of the same question but just worded three different ways. In a nutshell. The question really is, do I need to be certified to get started? Do I need to be certified to get clients? Do I need to be certified to be a coach? So if this is a question that you've wondered about, too, that means Today's episode is ready for you. Okay,
Candy Motzek:I have to tell you, I fully believe in coach training. But I don't think you need to have a certification. I know coaches who started their business right after the first day of training and have never looked back. And I also know coaches who have spent 1000s of dollars and hundreds and hundreds of hours and still don't have a client. In my experience. And I have been a coach for years. I have never once had a client asked me if I'm certified. Now I do hold certifications. I have a CPCC since I was trained and certified with CTI, the CO active coach training. And I'm a PCC those letters mean I'm a professionally certified coach with the ICF, the International coaching Federation, but no one. Not one person has ever asked me about my certifications. As I said at the start, I believe in training. That's because being a coach is a skill and it's an important skill. Learning how to hold space. Listen, ask questions, be curious. Use your intuition, metaphors and physicality. Just support your clients growth doesn't just come naturally. And all training supports this skill. Being a coach is important. as a profession, and if you're serious about being a professional coach, you want to make sure that you get some training, so you can do a great job. If you knew you wanted to be an accountant, of course, you would take accounting courses, right. Or if you wanted to be a trades person, maybe a plumber, you'd expect to take some training, coaching is no different. I also believe that being a coach means you're signing up for a lifetime of learning and personal development. I can only take my clients as far as I've gone myself. And the more I learn and grow, the more I can help them learn and grow. But certification, truthfully, it's not needed. Now, some of you like those letters behind your name, you know what I mean? The Ba, the MA, the MBAs, the PhDs. And they are wonderful. If you're motivated by achieving these milestones, by all means get certified. I'm not saying don't get a certification, just that you don't need to have it. And you don't have to wait to complete a certification to get started. It's not going to be the reason that you succeed, or the reason that you fail. This is the double edged sword of the coaching industry right now. There are highly trained coaches. And there are people who call themselves coaches working side by side in the same industry. And no one really knows who is who. Since there are multiple associations, and there is no one governing body, there is freedom. clients have options, coaches have options, and each individual gets to do their own research. And I recommend that you do do your research when you're deciding on your training, and make a decision based on your values and your ethics and the results of your research. At this time in the coaching industry, it's a personal choice. Perhaps the question might be better worded as you want to be certified, you'll know what's right for you. I hope this gives you some perspective. And in the meantime, if you've been wanting to become a coach, start your training and begin inviting people to work with you. As a new coach, you're very capable with coaching some people for sure. And as your coaching skills grow, you'll be able to expand your coaching practice. Alright, that's it for today. So let's wrap it up. You guys know that I appreciate you being here. I appreciate the time that you spend listening. And if you haven't made some of these decisions about where to get your training, whether to be certified or not. Use this episode as the starting place for you to start doing your research. Don't let anything hold you back from becoming a coach who can help people. And remember, I want to hear from you. Send me a DM with ideas for future episodes. And I'll dedicate the episode to you. And that means I'll give you a shout out on social. And in the episode. My clients are go getters and many of them have wanted to become a coach for weeks, months or even years before they got started.
