Hello, and welcome to Rediscovering U where you will find valuable insights, support and education to help you move through the difficult and often painful process of divorce with grace and courage and hope, and find the ultimate gift of rediscovering yourself. I'm your host, Barb Greenberg, award winning author and founder of rediscovering you. If I'd had access to a resource like this during my divorce, I would have not felt so isolated, I would have made much better decisions, I still would have breathed for that for so hard for so long. And I wouldn't have eaten so many boxes of macaroni and cheese. When women heal, families heal. When families heal communities heal. When communities heal, the possibilities are endless. Let's get started.
Barb Greenberg:I'm so excited to introduce you to my podcast rediscovering you, and to share why I feel so very grateful to connect with you and other women like you who are moving forward through your divorce and into your new future. People have asked me why I'm doing this. And I tell them, I had no idea I was going to do something like this. But I did divorce after 33 years of marriage. And I had no idea I was going to do something like that either. And I have to tell you, this feels a lot better. I'm doing this because during my divorce, I felt like I was drowning. And when I reached dry land, I wanted to reach back to help other women find a place where they could feel grounded and feel safe, and heal and find hope and find confidence as they move forward. So wherever you find yourself in your divorce process, approaching, experiencing or moving forward, there will be something of value for you. In our episodes, my guests, and I will cover the nuts and bolts pieces, as well as the emotional complexities, and offer practical suggestions. Offer relatable stories that can give you hope and strengthen your confidence and even make you smile. I'm offering what I wished I had known things that would have eased my mind and my heart and lessen the fear and the grief and the loneliness? And what if it helped me answer that question? Who am I now that I'm no longer part of a couple anymore? Who am I? So the practical pieces are legal things to be aware of financial pieces, real estate insurance, things that you have to make decisions about that can affect the rest of your life. And during a time you have to make these decisions during a time when it's the hardest to do. Because of the emotional turmoil and emotional turmoil.
Barb Greenberg:It's something else that we will be speaking about the emotional roller coaster, how do you deal with that, where you wake up one morning, and you can barely get out of bed, and then you cry, and then you're fine. And then you rage and then you want some chocolate? And then you're fine again, and then you're laugh? And then you cry? And then you're angry? And then you want some more chocolate? And I know it's funny, but I could do that roller coaster ride three or four times before breakfast? It's exhausting, isn't it? It's just exhausting? And how to handle how do you handle difficult and stressful situations? How do you handle difficult and stressful personalities that you may be dealing with? How do you reclaim your voice or strengthen the voice that you had? Or reconnect to your courage and trust yourself even more, or maybe for the first time. And that was me trusting myself really trusting myself for the first time? Because I remember, I was in my 40s and someone asked me what my favorite color was? And I couldn't give them an answer. What if I gave them the wrong answer? What if they didn't like the color I chose? What if I changed my mind? That is not a very healthy place to be at all. So I had a lot of work to do on that. And then also issues on when you're ready, how to move forward, how to rebuild. And that is something I didn't know either how to begin again. I did not know. We sold our home that we'd lived in for over 20 years. I moved into a small apartment, this sweet little apartment because I didn't know how to begin again. I'd walk in the door I throw my car keys on the table and I go at 53 years old and I'm all alone in its little apartment. And some days I would rage about it. And some days as soon as my car keys hit the table I grab a box of Kleenex because I needed to sit on a cell phone and have a Good cry.
Barb Greenberg:So one morning though, it took some time. But one morning, I woke up, I looked out the window onto the parking lot, because that was my view onto the parking lot. And I said to myself, you know, I'm 53 years old, and I'm all alone in this cute little apartment. Wow, big shift. It doesn't mean that there were still a lot of difficult issues for me to deal with a lot of tough times. But it was a glimmer of hope, this little light that I was back, I was going to come back, I was going to be okay, I was going to make a trip. That's, and that's what I want these podcast episodes to do for you to be a companion to remind you that you are going to make it through this that you are going to make the best decisions possible that you have support, that you're not alone, that you are braver than you've ever, ever imagined. And I'm very grateful to be part of this journey with you.
