Are You Too Old To Reinvent | LAYC54

Are You Too Old To Reinvent | LAYC54

When is old too old?

When are you too old to reinvent?

What age is the right age to stop being curious, passionate, evolving?

What age do you look like?

Act like?

Want to be?

In conversation with a dear friend who I hadn’t seen face to face for 10 years, she exclaimed:

“Isabel, you haven’t changed a bit. I think you look younger since I saw you last!

You don’t look your age at all!”

I expressed the same sentiments to her, sincerely awed at how vibrant and youthful she seemed, knowing her 77th birthday was only months away.

We hugged and laughed, thrilled to be in person again, grateful that our friendship was still strong, even after a decade hiatus.

Over wine we mused, “What does any age look like now?”

We agreed, we don’t resemble our mothers or grandmothers. And we don’t even resemble the “us” we’d been programmed to expect by societal norms of decades ago.

She’s reinventing.

I am reinventing.

Most baby boomers are reinventing and redefining.

Isabel:

Hi.

Isabel:

Welcome back,

Isabel:

Recently I was asked a question that I didn't hesitate at all to answer.

Isabel:

I'm curious to know what you might answer if you were asked...

Isabel:

When are you too old to reinvent yourself?

Isabel:

When, you especially as a woman, should just settle for where you

Isabel:

are, who you are, how you look...

Isabel:

And not put yourself through any growing pains, or evolution, or

Isabel:

struggle with reinventing to become the next iteration of yourself.

Isabel:

Is it possible, that at some age...

Isabel:

We have reached the point of...

Isabel:

This is the best I will ever be?

Isabel:

Or...

Isabel:

Is it possible that...

Isabel:

That never happens?

Isabel:

I am of the opinion...

Isabel:

I don't want to ever reach that stage.

Isabel:

I don't wanna reach the stage where I think...

Isabel:

That's it.

Isabel:

I'm done.

Isabel:

I don't have the opportunity to learn anymore...

Isabel:

To broaden my horizons or perspectives.

Isabel:

I don't wanna reach the stage where I say...

Isabel:

There are no experiences yet that I want to have.

Isabel:

There are no flavors to taste, or sights to see...

Isabel:

or things to touch, or people to meet, or people to fall in love with...

Isabel:

Or people to help.

Isabel:

I don't ever wanna reach that point of...

Isabel:

I'm done.

Isabel:

I'm complete.

Isabel:

Because then I feel like...

Isabel:

What's left?

Isabel:

What is the point of getting outta bed every morning?

Isabel:

What's the point of brushing your teeth, or brushing your hair?

Isabel:

For me, every day is an adventure.

Isabel:

Sometimes I think...

Isabel:

What the F are you doing now, girl?

Isabel:

Trying that, expanding this, changing, stretching yourself to grow.

Isabel:

But truthfully, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Isabel:

I'm aware there are people around me who love me...

Isabel:

Who would kind of like me to slow it down, dial it back a bit...

Isabel:

Sit still for a while...

Isabel:

And not be taking on new paths in my life.

Isabel:

Oh, and then of course...

Isabel:

There's that primitive brain of mine...

Isabel:

The monkey mind...

Isabel:

Who is saying...

Isabel:

No!

Isabel:

Stay safe!

Isabel:

Stay small!

Isabel:

Keep your head down, so the tigers and the pterodactyls don't see you...

Isabel:

Keep a low profile.

Isabel:

Good enough now...

Isabel:

You've had enough life experience.

Isabel:

In fact, my brain is often saying...

Isabel:

Isabel, you've already lived a multitude of lifetimes compared to some people.

Isabel:

Don't you think you should leave some for others?

Isabel:

But no...

Isabel:

It isn't what is meant to be for me...

Isabel:

This continual magical mystery tour of my life, my journey

Isabel:

through the womanhood wonderland.

Isabel:

My desire to learn about new things, and to add to my lifetime of tacit knowledge.

Isabel:

Like it or not...

Isabel:

On that journey...

Isabel:

I'm gonna do things that I realize...

Isabel:

Whoops...

Isabel:

Did not enjoy that...

Isabel:

Kinda wanna stop that now...

Isabel:

Throw it in rivers, back up, and go down another road.

Isabel:

There are going to be experiences that I will have, and people

Isabel:

I will meet, that I will go...

Isabel:

Ouch...

Isabel:

That was rather unpleasant.

Isabel:

But you know what?

Isabel:

I don't regret those things because they did grow and learn from that.

Isabel:

Even if at the time, it seemed unfair, uncomfortable...

Isabel:

Expensive...

Isabel:

As in the case of some relationships.

Isabel:

The good thing is that...

Isabel:

Because I like change, and I know ultimately when you get through

Isabel:

some of the metamorphosis phase, the ooey-guck of transformation.

Isabel:

It's a wonderful new world on the other side.

Isabel:

The wings that are unfolding allow you to go places you haven't been before, and

Isabel:

are there to help you Lift As You Climb.

Isabel:

On this journey with this podcast...

Isabel:

That's what we've been doing over the last year and a half...

Isabel:

Exploring the ways that we can take flight in our lives.

Isabel:

Reinforcing that the stereotypes of the baby boomer and beyond

Isabel:

generation, are just that...

Isabel:

They're stereotypes...

Isabel:

They're advertising programs that were created to benefit

Isabel:

some corporation or another...

Isabel:

That I am no different in my desire to explore, and excavate,

Isabel:

and learn about myself...

Isabel:

To be able to answer the three questions that I shared on the last episode.

Isabel:

That at the end of my life...

Isabel:

When I look back, will I be able to answer with satisfaction...

Isabel:

Did I really live?

Isabel:

Did I truly love?

Isabel:

Did I matter to enough people to have made a difference and lived my legacy?

Isabel:

So if you're out there thinking...

Isabel:

Oh, I'm too old...

Isabel:

I'm too young.

Isabel:

I'm too this, that...

Isabel:

Too rich, too thin, too poor, too educated, too ignorant in some

Isabel:

areas, to reinvent and to change.

Isabel:

Let me affirm...

Isabel:

You are not, and it is highly recommended that you do.

Isabel:

Change often for the better.

Isabel:

Reinvent as frequently as you can.

Isabel:

Remember, you're not throwing out what you've already been...

Isabel:

You're adding to your lifetime vault of personal value...

Isabel:

Your personal currency.

Isabel:

Thank you for being part of the richness of my life...
