Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another episode of health hacks as I continue my series on 12 easy hacks to better health. And today, I want to talk to you about managing stress effectively. Stress is literally a part of life. However, when it becomes chronic, it can wreak havoc on our body. It literally weakens our immune system, our gut health, it disrupts sleep, and you know all of that already. However, what happens is we look around and we see everyone else is stressed out, and we think it's normal, and we shouldn't be normalizing it. What we really need to do is take back our power, take back our control, to manage our stress in ways that support our health and well being, and so that we can show up and offer the world the best of us every single day. And that's part of a mantra that I created when I realized that self care was the most important thing that we can do, and I had previously been programmed to believe that it was selfish, and it isn't because we can't serve from an empty cup. We have to look after ourselves first. And so that entire mantra is that self care is the most selfless act as it allows you to show up and give the world the best of you instead of what's left of you. And so how do we do that? We program time for ourselves into our calendar that no one else can take away. You know, I program morning time into my calendar. I put my lunch break into my calendar. I put my ski time into my calendar. I have, you know, friends laugh at me because I'm booking my ski dates with my girlfriends in August of the year prior to make sure that no one else can take that time away from me. And there's also very simple steps that you can take to lower your stress in the moment. One of those is practicing deep breathing. I often talk about the 557, technique, and if you go back and check out health Hack number 18 on my YouTube channel, you will I guide you through exactly how to do that, spending time in nature or simply engaging in activities that bring you joy, whether that be adult coloring books, reading a book, curled up in front of a fire, having a bath. What is it that brings you joy going for a walk, as well as making sure that you set boundaries and learn to say no in order to protect your energy. Because every time you say no to someone else, you're saying yes to you, usually what we want to do is we want to say yes to other people, and that's when we say no to ourselves. And if we say yes too often, we become overwhelmed, and so setting those boundaries is really important. And as I mentioned, putting things in your calendar, using your calendar is a form of a boundary, because it's protecting that time for you, and then you have the choice of what you want to do with that time, and if you need to shift it around in your day. Sometimes I do that if something comes up during the time that I've protected that I want to do, I'll move the time however. It gives me the choice that time just doesn't get taken away by somebody else. It gives me the choice, do I really want to do that? And if you want to learn how to set boundaries in a really powerful way, leaving all emotion to the side, we teach this in our amplify your mind master class, and I'll drop the link to that in the chat. It's a two day master class. We teach much more than just how to set boundaries. It's a fabulous class where you get to tap into the power of your unconscious mind and learn some of these tools. You get to experience a couple of a couple of hypnotic inductions and learn strategic thinking and decision making and boundary setting and much more. So if that's of interest, the link for that class is in the show notes. And I just want to leave you with the notion that chronic stress is not normal. It is negatively impacting your health in ways that you can't even begin to imagine in terms of the effect that it will have 10 to 20 years down the line, and what you do today to manage your stress matters, and these small steps that I've given you are things that you can easily implement in order to lower the load of stress on your body and enjoy them, have fun with it.
