Welcome to destined for success. I'm your
Jennifer Takagi:host Jennifer Takagi and today I'm happy to have with me Dr.
Jennifer Takagi:Michelle Greenwell a Complementary and Integrative
Jennifer Takagi:Health Specialist. What did I miss? I missed a word in there.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Yeah, integrative health specialist.
Jennifer Takagi:Yep.
Jennifer Takagi:Perfect. I love it. So Michelle's on my calendar
Jennifer Takagi:and I was like, Can you remind me how we know each other. So we
Jennifer Takagi:had to go down a rabbit hole on how we know each other how we
Jennifer Takagi:got connected. And we got connected through the amazing
Jennifer Takagi:Michelle Abraham, who has the company amplify you, which is
Jennifer Takagi:the company that actually produces my podcast. So super
Jennifer Takagi:fun. And I'm in her mastermind. So Dr. Michelle, she's a
Jennifer Takagi:movement specialist, and helps people who sit at their desk too
Jennifer Takagi:long. And she has a tea company, I want to hear about the tea
Jennifer Takagi:company. But I'm more intrigued with this whole movement
Jennifer Takagi:specialist. So I have had both knees operated on. The last
Jennifer Takagi:surgery was 2015, I slipped in the mud and tore my meniscus.
Jennifer Takagi:And it was, you know, not pretty. And then because of
Jennifer Takagi:structurally how I'm set up, they did a lateral release of
Jennifer Takagi:the tendon because the tendon was literally pulling the
Jennifer Takagi:kneecap out of socket. So I had been working out for way over a
Jennifer Takagi:year and a half with a trainer, my knees have been better than
Jennifer Takagi:they've been in, I'm gonna say 30 years. And I'm not even
Jennifer Takagi:exaggerating. I'm so excitable about it. And then one day,
Jennifer Takagi:about seven weeks ago, I stood up from my desk and turn to walk
Jennifer Takagi:out of my office and went, Man, my knee just like it wasn't
Jennifer Takagi:quite ready to keep walking. And we kept walking, everything was
Jennifer Takagi:good. And a little bit later, I went to get up a physical
Jennifer Takagi:therapist refer to it as a bite, like, oh, where does it bite and
Jennifer Takagi:I was like, that's a perfect description it bit me. So it
Jennifer Takagi:just kept getting worse and worse until like, I just wanted
Jennifer Takagi:to sit in my chair all day because it hurts so bad to walk.
Jennifer Takagi:So I went to a therapeutic massage gal. And I said, I do
Jennifer Takagi:not want my knees replaced. I don't want to do that. I don't
Jennifer Takagi:know what this is like Mool she has Oh is sciatica. And it's
Jennifer Takagi:that IT band and it's pulling on your knee, we got to get this
Jennifer Takagi:stretched out and strengthen. That's your problem. So here we
Jennifer Takagi:are seven weeks later, multiple massages, several physical
Jennifer Takagi:therapy appointments. Today, I woke up actually, and it's
Jennifer Takagi:better than it's been in seven weeks. So I might have like,
Jennifer Takagi:crossed over into the good path of this. But tell me more like
Jennifer Takagi:how do I make this go away? And never come back? And do I have
Jennifer Takagi:to find a candidate to do it? Those are my important.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: No, thank goodness for the internet,
Jennifer Takagi:right? I do a lot of my work online. And it's movement,
Jennifer Takagi:that's very simple. So people can do it anywhere. And, and
Jennifer Takagi:it's gentle. That's the other piece, which is lovely. So one
Jennifer Takagi:of the things that happens when people have that bite that
Jennifer Takagi:occurs, I'll use your quote for that is that they actually the
Jennifer Takagi:body is remembering a pattern. And so even though you've
Jennifer Takagi:recovered from some of the other things that have gone on, it
Jennifer Takagi:remembers that pattern and you just turn in a certain way it
Jennifer Takagi:recognizes it, it says I've got to keep you safe. And then it
Jennifer Takagi:steps in with a pattern that's not very helpful. And it thinks
Jennifer Takagi:it's serving you well. And what you want to do is you want to
Jennifer Takagi:get rid of that pattern. Because you can do all the other stuff,
Jennifer Takagi:which all works. But one day, you could be sitting at the desk
Jennifer Takagi:again, and you turn and then you'll say it's back. And it's
Jennifer Takagi:not that it's back. It's that you never actually address the
Jennifer Takagi:original problem. And so you want to get down to the original
Jennifer Takagi:piece that that is holding. And what a lot of people don't
Jennifer Takagi:realize is their emotions, pocket all over their body. So
Jennifer Takagi:it's like a big story book. And that story book can have really
Jennifer Takagi:weird connections. You know, your ankle could remember one
Jennifer Takagi:thing from when you were two, and your shoulder can remember
Jennifer Takagi:something from when you were seven. And you've got all these
Jennifer Takagi:pieces, but it depends which emotion you're sitting in for
Jennifer Takagi:the day. And it depends what movements you make. So you can
Jennifer Takagi:see how the puzzle starts to get a little bit complicated. But
Jennifer Takagi:what we do is just figure out how do we get to releasing those
Jennifer Takagi:emotions and move the body forward For those people that
Jennifer Takagi:have sciatic challenges, that is a repetitive pattern. And most
Jennifer Takagi:people spend too much time sitting. So that's an easy,
Jennifer Takagi:repetitive pattern. But then you also have how you get in and out
Jennifer Takagi:of the chair, how you go up and down the stairs, how you get in
Jennifer Takagi:and out of bed. Those are all ways that you might have a
Jennifer Takagi:pattern in there that just turn that one way. And there you are,
Jennifer Takagi:or you sit for too long. And those lovely muscles so as
Jennifer Takagi:muscle and iliacus. Those are two muscles that have to do with
Jennifer Takagi:the sciatic. There's other little pieces, but from the book
Jennifer Takagi:of that those are emotions around fear and anxiety.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh, just stop already.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Too much about you. Right? I wasn't even
Jennifer Takagi:reading a tarot card. Gotcha.
Jennifer Takagi:Okay. So interestingly, since we don't
Jennifer Takagi:really know each other, like at all, I follow Dr. Bradley
Jennifer Takagi:Nelson's book, the Emotion Code and his work The Body Code, and
Jennifer Takagi:I've been doing a lot of work on myself, right. But sometimes you
Jennifer Takagi:have to have somebody else, I can only do so much on myself,
Jennifer Takagi:we second guess whatever. So it's very interesting. And I
Jennifer Takagi:have a lot of fun things going on in my business. But it is a
Jennifer Takagi:little bit scary. And there is a little bit of fear. And there's
Jennifer Takagi:also the anxiety is it going to work are people going to like
Jennifer Takagi:it. And although I'm not like an anxiety ridden person, per se,
Jennifer Takagi:it's not that I don't experience that emotion, right. So like it
Jennifer Takagi:happened. So I mean, like, I love you, and I hate you in this
Jennifer Takagi:moment, let me just tell you,
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: when the second part is, which a lot of
Jennifer Takagi:people don't realize, and this comes from Chinese medicine and
Jennifer Takagi:the way that the systems function in the five element
Jennifer Takagi:wheel. And when we have balance and flow in the wheel, all day
Jennifer Takagi:long, then our emotions regulate themselves. So you could have
Jennifer Takagi:projects you're working on, you could be trying new projects,
Jennifer Takagi:you could be launching something new, and fear and anxiety is
Jennifer Takagi:present. But you don't notice it. Because the body is taking
Jennifer Takagi:care of the emotions processing and moving you forward, then you
Jennifer Takagi:have the day where it's not imbalance. And then that's when
Jennifer Takagi:you've spent too much time maybe at the computer, the next spin
Jennifer Takagi:on a an angle that it doesn't want to be at. And you've locked
Jennifer Takagi:up something back here. And depending on where it's at, that
Jennifer Takagi:could affect maybe stomach or spleen as an exam, just an
Jennifer Takagi:example. And so then you can see that now that goes into a little
Jennifer Takagi:bit of overdrive or it's blocked. And then the emotions
Jennifer Takagi:that sit there, start to come forward. So now when you're
Jennifer Takagi:making decisions about that new project, or how you're launching
Jennifer Takagi:something, you're not doing it through a clear lens, you're
Jennifer Takagi:doing it through the lens of where you're sitting at
Jennifer Takagi:emotionally, because of the way the body is functioning,
Jennifer Takagi:make it go away, that's all I have to say
Jennifer Takagi:make it go away.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Yeah. And that's where dynamic sitting,
Jennifer Takagi:where you're moving, and you're changing the way the body is
Jennifer Takagi:functioning while you sit rather than just sitting and listening
Jennifer Takagi:to the business call, or working on the project intently focused
Jennifer Takagi:on your computer, but you actually are aware of what is
Jennifer Takagi:your posture doing, how much stress are you holding in. And
Jennifer Takagi:so I teach people how to do that. And then I also show them
Jennifer Takagi:how to do simple movements to bring balance and flow back. And
Jennifer Takagi:it's cumulative. So the more you work on it every day, the more
Jennifer Takagi:value you're going to have from it. So it's not when you block
Jennifer Takagi:it in to go to the gym today. But it's actually all through
Jennifer Takagi:your day, you're weaving this in and out of the day, so that you
Jennifer Takagi:don't have these times when the emotions rise up because it's
Jennifer Takagi:out of balance. And then they drop out again, when everything
Jennifer Takagi:comes back into balance. So it keeps it nice and steady.
Jennifer Takagi:Wow. So like how do you do this? Like, I know
Jennifer Takagi:how I do my work? How do you do your work? Not like your trade
Jennifer Takagi:secrets or something. But like how do you work with clients as
Jennifer Takagi:a group? Is it one on one? Like, how does that happen?
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Yes. So I can work one on one, which is
Jennifer Takagi:great, because then you can go in and target some of the
Jennifer Takagi:initial pieces that I really love working in a group. And I
Jennifer Takagi:love that too, because you have everybody's goals and intentions
Jennifer Takagi:that are brought to the group, which means you have your own,
Jennifer Takagi:which you think are the important ones but somebody else
Jennifer Takagi:could have a goal or an intention they're working on
Jennifer Takagi:that actually is going to help you solve what you're working
Jennifer Takagi:on. So when we come together in a group it the dynamics of that
Jennifer Takagi:is really fun. So I do that as a movement made easy class, which
Jennifer Takagi:is very simple movements. And I have a focus into to different
Jennifer Takagi:parts of the body. So right now I'm doing the digestive system.
Jennifer Takagi:I worked on the nervous system for one full session for eight
Jennifer Takagi:weeks and looking at the body from a structural perspective,
Jennifer Takagi:but also from an electrical perspective, and then putting
Jennifer Takagi:the two together. And the other way I do it is a class called
Jennifer Takagi:Chi integration, which is where I'm looking at all the things
Jennifer Takagi:related to energy, as well as the structure and we do
Jennifer Takagi:movement. But we also really look at the energy concepts that
Jennifer Takagi:could be transforming us and changing the way we live.
Jennifer Takagi:Wow. Wow. So how, how did you get into this?
Jennifer Takagi:How long have you been doing this? Is this? Like, I've never
Jennifer Takagi:heard of most of this, right? Because there's so many
Jennifer Takagi:possibilities out there.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Yeah, yeah. So I was a dancer, dance
Jennifer Takagi:teacher, until I lost the ability to walk. And I lost the
Jennifer Takagi:ability to walk because my emotions had pocketed in my
Jennifer Takagi:muscles, mostly in my feet. So being a dancer, right, it wasn't
Jennifer Takagi:paying attention to the stress cues that were coming the normal
Jennifer Takagi:way. So my body had to find a way where I would pay attention,
Jennifer Takagi:which was okay, we're going to target the feet. Because the
Jennifer Takagi:feet are the most important part is as a dancer to move. So I
Jennifer Takagi:lost the ability to walk on them, the pain was so
Jennifer Takagi:excruciating. And it took me the better part of a year. One, it
Jennifer Takagi:took me ahead of Google search, because that didn't exist at the
Jennifer Takagi:time. So to try to find someone one of the dance educators, I
Jennifer Takagi:went to a workshop with Lynn Simonson beautiful, modern
Jennifer Takagi:dancer from New York. She said, Touch for Health. And I went,
Jennifer Takagi:Okay, that sounds important. And that might be helpful. But then
Jennifer Takagi:it took me a year to track down, where would I find that, only to
Jennifer Takagi:find an amazing instructor that lived in the next town for me,
Jennifer Takagi:and then being able to start to work and I started studying
Jennifer Takagi:right away. And then when I started to realize how much
Jennifer Takagi:potential was in the five element theory, from Chinese
Jennifer Takagi:medicine, applying it back to movement, applying it to
Jennifer Takagi:dancers, who use the motion, all through their performance, and
Jennifer Takagi:their training. And they have to do things with their bodies that
Jennifer Takagi:aren't always great. But they also have to be able to resolve
Jennifer Takagi:those emotions that come up because of that. And so
Jennifer Takagi:realizing there was a huge potential there to be able to
Jennifer Takagi:advance it. So after I worked on myself, for a little while,
Jennifer Takagi:brought it all together and studied, I was taking it right
Jennifer Takagi:into the studio and sharing it with my dancers.
Jennifer Takagi:I think that's amazing. And we don't, we don't
Jennifer Takagi:always give enough importance to the emotions we feel. And if we
Jennifer Takagi:process them, and did they move on. And so in my work, the fun
Jennifer Takagi:thing with, with what I do is, you don't have to remember the
Jennifer Takagi:event. You don't have to know what it was. But we can set the
Jennifer Takagi:attention clear the emotion and, and make great, great headway. I
Jennifer Takagi:had a client who had a hip replaced. And then she woke up
Jennifer Takagi:from surgery and she couldn't flex her foot or lift her leg.
Jennifer Takagi:And they were like, well, we didn't do anything that wasn't
Jennifer Takagi:us. That wasn't us. And so blah, blah, blah. Two years later, she
Jennifer Takagi:still is dragging that leg trying to walk and so I had to
Jennifer Takagi:learn how to drive left footed. And I was just getting into the
Jennifer Takagi:Emotion Code. And I said, Well, you know, you said your husband
Jennifer Takagi:likes to go hiking, and and you end up like all these black
Jennifer Takagi:diamond hikes when you want to be on a bunny slope. Did you
Jennifer Takagi:have some trapped emotions around that? And she was like,
Jennifer Takagi:Yes. And I said, Do you want to try to get rid of them? And she
Jennifer Takagi:was like, Yes. And I don't know how many sessions we had, it was
Jennifer Takagi:a lot of sessions. And then I learned The Body Code. And it
Jennifer Takagi:actually was the piriformis muscle in the hip that was
Jennifer Takagi:imbalanced that was causing her not to be able to lift her foot.
Jennifer Takagi:And we resolved that and we're still working and she's way
Jennifer Takagi:better. But you know, it's it's not 100% yet. And so I totally
Jennifer Takagi:get how it's everything is connected anything in cars,
Jennifer Takagi:anything. And everything is energy like that all you know,
Jennifer Takagi:you're we're singing from the same song, but for sure.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Yeah. And then you also have, we've been
Jennifer Takagi:trained to isolate movements, right. So when we go to turn our
Jennifer Takagi:head, we think about turning it to the right, turn it to the
Jennifer Takagi:left. But after you've done a couple movements from Tai Chi,
Jennifer Takagi:or maybe a specific dance move, you actually get a whole body
Jennifer Takagi:integration where your entire spine rotates to turn your head.
Jennifer Takagi:And for a lot of people that's a huge awakening because they've
Jennifer Takagi:always no movement to be. If you want something to happen, you do
Jennifer Takagi:this action. Not you do this whole body action. When you sit
Jennifer Takagi:at a desk Ask you sit at a desk, or you engage with your feet,
Jennifer Takagi:you move through the pelvis, you're spiraling, you're
Jennifer Takagi:turning, you're engaged, you're breathing. And now you have
Jennifer Takagi:dynamic sitting. So you have, you know, you have your choice
Jennifer Takagi:of which way you want to live.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh, wow. Wow, this is amazing. Okay, so if the
Jennifer Takagi:audience wants to get ahold of you, how are they going to find
Jennifer Takagi:you? Where, where do they where do they go? Where
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: did they go, they can find me in a lot of
Jennifer Takagi:places. So I do have my own podcast, which is be well with
Jennifer Takagi:Michelle Greenwell. And they can find that on my YouTube channel,
Jennifer Takagi:the video version, and on YouTube. It's at Michelle
Jennifer Takagi:Greenwell. And if they're looking for resources on
Jennifer Takagi:movement, there are many playlists on my YouTube channel
Jennifer Takagi:so they can find what they're looking for. And if they want
Jennifer Takagi:specific resources, then I would recommend link tree. So it would
Jennifer Takagi:be HTTPS, colon slash slash, and then link TR dot E. So there's
Jennifer Takagi:a.in Between, and then a slash, and it'll be dance debut. And
Jennifer Takagi:dance debut.com is the website that I run most things out of,
Jennifer Takagi:except for my tea company. But everything else movement and
Jennifer Takagi:healing related comes out of dance debut.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh my gosh, I love that. And it's. So somebody
Jennifer Takagi:once said, if somebody's listened to your podcast, they
Jennifer Takagi:don't want to go get on a computer and look something up.
Jennifer Takagi:And I said, but it's in the show notes. So people, it'll be in
Jennifer Takagi:the show notes, just click the show notes. It's still on your
Jennifer Takagi:phone, so that you can reach out to Dr. Michelle Greenwell. Oh my
Jennifer Takagi:gosh, this has been amazing. So what can you give us one
Jennifer Takagi:suggestion, in addition to the dynamic setting, you know, I
Jennifer Takagi:love that. And what's one last suggestion tip that you can give
Jennifer Takagi:us before we let you get back to your busy day.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: So if you're sitting, you want to know
Jennifer Takagi:how much stress the body is under. Now an optimist is going
Jennifer Takagi:to say, Oh, it's great, I've got everything good. You know, I'm
Jennifer Takagi:like a two out of 10 for stress. And someone else might say eight
Jennifer Takagi:out of 10. Both could be right. But what the body is going to do
Jennifer Takagi:is tell you the level of stress. So for a lot of people, they're
Jennifer Takagi:going to sit back into their chair, they're going to shut off
Jennifer Takagi:the cerebral spinal pump on their tailbone. And they're
Jennifer Takagi:going to stop the flow of fluid up to the brain, then they're
Jennifer Takagi:going to think I need to have a cup of coffee, because I'm
Jennifer Takagi:feeling kind of like rundown. But that's because of where
Jennifer Takagi:they're sitting. So my suggestion, first off, is flying
Jennifer Takagi:straight. And so in my office, it's a flat seat, I have a back
Jennifer Takagi:on it, but I hardly ever use it because I always sit up straight
Jennifer Takagi:myself. And I'm always using my own muscle balance to do that.
Jennifer Takagi:But the next part is going to be where's the stress. So what you
Jennifer Takagi:do is you just pull on the ears and see where your body lifts
Jennifer Takagi:to. And that's straight.
Jennifer Takagi:Wow, I got a standing up straight just now
Jennifer Takagi:that I was
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: exactly. And that's what everybody says.
Jennifer Takagi:So that now you can realize, as the stress ramps up in the day,
Jennifer Takagi:electromagnetic things coming off your computer, you got the
Jennifer Takagi:phone, hanging off your body somewhere, all of that stress is
Jennifer Takagi:going to change your posture. And you can, this isn't the fix
Jennifer Takagi:for it. But it certainly shows you where straight should be.
Jennifer Takagi:And you should be able to get there with ease. If it's a lot
Jennifer Takagi:of effort for you to sit up straight, pull your ears overtop
Jennifer Takagi:of your shoulders, then you need some exercises that help you to
Jennifer Takagi:find where that is and keeps you there. And it's not because you
Jennifer Takagi:have to consciously do it. It's that you need to engage the body
Jennifer Takagi:in a way that puts it in the right place.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh my gosh, I love that. Okay, we didn't talk
Jennifer Takagi:about your T company. And you tell us very quickly about that
Jennifer Takagi:before we sign off because I don't want to leave that out.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: No, because that's the fun part too.
Jennifer Takagi:You can have all your nutrients can be coming through teas,
Jennifer Takagi:because you can choose the different kinds of products that
Jennifer Takagi:are within it. And also with the tea company that I have. I have
Jennifer Takagi:teas with intention. So they already have an intention on the
Jennifer Takagi:package. And the ones that are specifically working on
Jennifer Takagi:intention have more intentions on the back of the package. So
Jennifer Takagi:you have a way that you prepare the tea so a little tea ritual
Jennifer Takagi:and then you have what is it you're wanting out of your day.
Jennifer Takagi:How do you want things to be better? And then you sip away on
Jennifer Takagi:the tea and you Use those affirmations. I also have
Jennifer Takagi:ingredients that come from around. I wouldn't say the yard
Jennifer Takagi:but around the community that grow in abundance. And very
Jennifer Takagi:often, we just noticed them. One that I put into one called beach
Jennifer Takagi:bonfire is Queen Anne's lace. Queen Anne's lace is a beautiful
Jennifer Takagi:white flower, it has a tiny red.in the center of it, very
Jennifer Takagi:delicate, and it looks like lace. And when I add that into
Jennifer Takagi:my beach bonfire, it tastes like a smore. But it's a small with
Jennifer Takagi:no sugar. But also you have this lightness and this lifting up
Jennifer Takagi:this joyfulness that comes out of the Queen Anne's lace. So I
Jennifer Takagi:play with the essences of the herbs, and how they combine
Jennifer Takagi:together in order to create ways to lift us up. And that's a lot
Jennifer Takagi:different than saying, I'm going to go pick my ginger tea out of
Jennifer Takagi:the cupboard, because it's good for digestion. It's Yes, it is.
Jennifer Takagi:But we can make it just so much more in a cup of tea.
Jennifer Takagi:Oh my gosh, I love that. Well, Dr. Michelle,
Jennifer Takagi:this has been lovely. Thank you for all the amazing information
Jennifer Takagi:you shared with me today, because this is all about me
Jennifer Takagi:people you're gonna benefit to but this was all about me.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: So what tea do you typically pick,
Jennifer Takagi:I don't drink tea.
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: Do you drink water,
Jennifer Takagi:I drink a lot of water, a
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: lot of water. So to be able to add to
Jennifer Takagi:your water. It could be ice cubes with tea. It could be tea
Jennifer Takagi:could be hot or cold. And then I also have a recipe for switchel
Jennifer Takagi:which is what they use to replace electrolytes. So before
Jennifer Takagi:the big power drinks that have all the sugar attached to them
Jennifer Takagi:and whatever all else, you can actually work with molasses,
Jennifer Takagi:apple cider vinegar, some honey, and I put the tea blend inside
Jennifer Takagi:of it. So that recipe is on the website, which is Cape Breton
Jennifer Takagi:tea.ca. And it's called switchel. And that is a lovely
Jennifer Takagi:way to really give a boost to yourself and to get those
Jennifer Takagi:nutrients flowing. And
Jennifer Takagi:oh my gosh, thank you so much for your time
Jennifer Takagi:and all the valuable information. Thank
Jennifer Takagi:Dr Michelle Greenwell: you, Jennifer, you asked some great
Jennifer Takagi:questions and it was lovely to bring the tips and tools forward
Jennifer Takagi:to your audience in the way that we did today.
Jennifer Takagi:Ah, thank you. This has been great. I'm
Jennifer Takagi:Jennifer Takagi and I look forward to connecting with you
Jennifer Takagi:soon
